- If you've ever wondered how to hook up hydraulics to a grapple on a tractor, today is the day to find out. On today's video I"ll be talking about the different ways you can run hydraulic fluid to a grapple on a tractor while talking about cost, easy of installation and overall functionality. I'll also be showing you why I chose to attach my grapple in the way I did and how it has worked out for me over the years. You'll also see me load some logs out in my woodlot using my current setup. This will give you an idea whether the functionality you see in my setup will work for you. Glad you're all here for today's video. Here we go!

I had my 3rd function kit dealer installed when I purchased my tractor last year. It was roughly $1500 cdn. Initially I thought of doing it off the rear ports but it would have been $1000 cdn for the installation of rear ports and you get less functionality. You're right about the grapple being one of the best implements to have
I think if I were to do it again and my dealer would price it right I"d do the same Paul
It cost me around $1600 to have the 3rd function kit installed for my grapple on my Kubota tractor,but it is really nice to have all the controls right there on the joystick.
I'd imagine it's a great investment for sure
@@sawingwithsandy An electric diverter valve was about $250. Add to that a few fittings, some wire and a switch. The total was around $300 ($cdn, I live near Quebec city).
Third function would be nice I'm sure, but I see no problem with your set up seems to work flawlessly. Good to see you, Sandy.

I'm sure you're like me and wouldn't mine a big variety of implements for the tractor but the cost is the thing
Looks like it work fine to me once you are use to it it is not a challenge it is like another piece of equipment experience you got to aquire it with practice now you got a lots more logs visible to work with a couple of trip with the log carrier and that pile will be ready to mill and use have a great day

Hi Sandy, I am enjoying your channel, I bought 56 acres last year and needed a tractor and my Kioti DK4210se was the best bang for my bucks, I had them add 3rd function, but I haven’t got a grapple yet, but I think I’ll be shopping for one soon.

I run my grapple the same way you have for many years (Kubota M6800).
But, I hookup and unhook the hoses at the rear hydraulics every time i use it.
It's a pain...
Think I'm going to run my hoses UNDER the tractor like you have done.
Where did you get the bracket on the front of the loader that the hose couplers are mounted on?

I equipped my Kioti with the third function kit from Michigan Iron It works flawlessly. I tried the long hoses for a year before I made the change. Never gong back. I needed 2 circuits at the back for my snowblower and 1 at the front for my snow blade. But if it works for you, great.

I was lucky on 3rd function and grappler for my bucket. Paid 900 from a person that had bought for his subcompact tractor. He sed he paid 1500.00. But traded in the tractor before installing.
To me it's a grappler on bucket is a must to have now. I'm going to run to rear from 3rd function.
My cs2510 subcompact I bought had 160 hours on it. Did not know anything about tractors when I bought it. Didn't take long to figure out .
I hope to have the third function one day as well. Bet it's real nice to operate

Have a DK65, I’m going to do the same thing, long hoses to the back, I have 2 sets so they can stay attached in one set, just wish I’d done it sooner the price of hoses has gone up significantly 😩, still cheaper than a 3rd function, this was a very informative video, awesome job 👍👍
I like that idea keeping the hydraulic lines hooked up. I may have to look into something like that as well. Nice tractor ya got there Russell. Some days I wouldn't mind a few more hp.
I've always had them add the 3rd function when I order a tractor, but what you did also works backwards. If you have a 3rd function and no rear remotes, you can run a longer line to the rear for a hydraulic top link or a 3pt log grapple ect.
I wouldn't care with a snowplow, but being able to use the curl function and close a grapple simultaneously with 1 hand is priceless. IMO.
I think that would be the way to go Dan. I think with time I’ll get a third function as well. Seems to be a great addition.
good video and job. if you are not using rear ports for rear mounted tools you can save a little money. hydra hoses have went up a lot the last 2 years so it may not be much cheaper now. when i got the last tractor i made them put a 3 rd remote on it before i would take tractor they did it at cost to make the sale. take care, be safe and well.
That would be the way to go for sure I bet. Allow the experts to do it right.
I hooked my grapple with hoses running up to the rear hydraulics too. Only difference, I used a T joint so I could plug an implement without unplugging the long hoses.
Today, I'd install a diverter valve instead because there are now very affordable valves and the price of hydraulic hoses went up a lot.
I think I'm going to look into that. I like the idea so I don't have to keep unplugged things in the winter especially.

I hope you see this message. I own the woodland mills max mill and have figured out how to cut without the magnetic tape. My cuts are perfect. You have a built in indexter on the manual crank. All you do is number each hole 1 thru 16 in counter clockwise motion. Once you figure out how many turns it takes to make 1inch tjhick for example you write it down on the metal post. It takes me 3 turns plus 7 holes for 1 inch thick. now the way you zero your blade is after you have made a cut just notice where your index is. if it is on hole 9 then raise the head one complete revolution to 9 and stop then pull the head of the saw back to the starting point and lower 1 rev back to 9 and you are at zero. then lower the head 3 revolutions plus 7 holes and you will have 1 inch thick. The other way to Zero is to lower the blade to the top of the cant and slowly pull it off the cant if your dragging saw dust your at zero. I also work it from the bottom up so i can make all my 2 x 4 and 2x6 the same 5and 3/4 inch and all i do is mark the post at 5 and 3/4 with a sharpy and write above it the hole i should be at it works great all my boards are the same thickness. By the way thanks for your videos they have really helped alot.

I would be tempted to add an extension to that rear remote control and call it good. I thought about doing the same as you but went with 3rd function. My rear remote not quite as handy as yours. Anyway, nice video!!!

I have been thinking that you could do something somewhat similar to mount a snowblower on the front of your tractor. But the difference would be mounting a PTO hydraulic pump on your draw bar to 😊get you the necessary GPM.
Those are neat setups I"ve seen Tony. I think the only drawback for me would be the cost at this point. I've thought about those type setups though as I've seen neat front-mounted mowers before
Sandy, I'm guessing from your explanation you cannot operate (open or close) the grapple while lifting or rolling the grapple rake? The third function can be nice, however, my nephew has one on his 70hp Kubota. When you're opening or closing the grapple, it has very little hydraulic flow when you're raising/lowering or tilting the rake. While I've not operated your tractor, on his I've found it best to bore in and scoop the grapple load, close the grapple and then lift/roll it.. all individual instead of simultaneous operations. In essence I'm doing what I perceive you're doing. Regardless, it's a tool that doesn't pay for itself this week, but like a table saw, it'll pay for itself time and again over the life of the tool. (I wasn't on yesterday so I didn't see this... t'was the wife's birthday, and THAT was a much higher priority interrupt)!!
Hey Carl! I do that method you mention were I dig in for a scoop then close the grapple, then lift. Bit slower compared to the motions of my mini excavator but does the trick
Option 4 westendorf no hydraulics. I went that route. But you have way more functionality.

I did the same but I t in the hose so when not in use the grapple you don't have to disconnect your hose in the back work well.

Hi Sandy. Snow on the ground still and we have 25 Celsius for the high today in west middle Georgia. Your time is coming, but so are the bugs, so snow might be better. Using the connections you already have was a wise choice. It looks like that connection for the grabble may have been less than $200. Will the grapple control handle extend about 6" to be even with the other control? Have good days!
IT's pretty wild out there with the high temperatures today and the deep snow still. Makes me wonder what's happening out there. I'd imagine the rear remotes handle is moving about 6" or so. I wonder if I could extend it upwards so I don't have to reach down as far to operate?

look at Princess auto for a diverter or another valve. they are a lot cheaper. you have to piece a kit for yourself tho... but saving a lot :)

Long hoses, such as you have, would be ripped off around here. The woods aren't as clean here, just overgrown messes. Unless you're working a commercial tree farm that is. Most of the loggers around here are working on private lots that are being cleared for new housing developments( blast them). But hey, at least someone has money. If they offered enough bucks I'd be even further out. lots further. Good vid. Thanks.

The rear remote joystick controls the valve on my rear remotes. It comes from the factory like that

I am picking on you as ya can't swing back but.... if I dish it out, feel free to sling it back Sandy as ya know I like the heck out of you and consider you one of my canadian friends whom I could set with, share some sludge with and swap lies on how fast my old ford tractor is. Actually my sixty year old son has a small collection of tractors that I have had hands on fixing them to work better. I am with you on this idea of just using what you have or dancing with the girl you took to the party with. I have a great story on that issue also.... no, not some sex thing, just being a man who can appreciate someone elses feelings. Because I was adopted, my sisters had a different last name and I used to take my red haired freckles for years... not just days to the dances and boy howdy did she ever tease other girls as to who had the best looking guy at the dances. Yeah, we didn't have computers, we had motivation and we did what guys do, have a lot of fun. She even introduced me to the girl I married. It was so funny as I found out later she had told my wife if she found out that she ever cheated on me or did me wrong... hell hath no fury like a redheaded sister! I am half native and they were all white girls so many didn't know or even care for that matter about us being related. I love older tractors and have redone them in so many ways including make them user friendly. I can not remember how I did padel levers on the steering wheel to be a side function... or work as well as the intended lever did as well so both worked. I know I will never convince you to try using more than one lever when using your grapple trailer... habits are not easily changed or re remembered as a natural function... its the same as playing a guitar... relearning how to strum as to just picking can get right crazy to do. The best things are usually self taught but bad habits just stick to ya like cockleburs to a puppies ears
Hey Morgan! Last time I was out using the loader I tried using both levers on the log loader trailer at once at it does really help with easing the controls and making my operation smoother. You're definitely not getting hoses that long for a hundred bucks.
On top of that, by the time you buy all of those hoses and the fittings and the bracket and the couplers, you have nearly bought half of the third function kit already. Certainly not knocking Your solution, but I always find it odd that guy's insinuate like this method is practically free when it definitely is not.
Comparatively speaking it was the most cost effective option at the time. Hoses are pretty inexpensive where I am. One of the other things that was a drawback for me getting the third function initially was the costs of labour as I'd likely have to pay my dealer to install that third function on top of the price of the third function itself. Lots of things to consider though when looking to get hydraulics to the front of the tractor. Thanks for coming along for the video. Hope to see you on the next one
