    Fun fact :
    In French version, Laurent speaks well english but obviously with a French accent.
    But the show insists on the fact Edamame has a weirder and stronger accent when he speaks english (but obviously his voice actor is French too) . Therefore, to give Edamame a bad accent, he's dubbed with an even more caricatural French accent than Laurent
    So the French character has a good english with a light French accent and the Japanese who's supposed to have a badder accent in english, has a frenchier accent than the actual French on the show.
    Hoping I was clear enough, because it made me laugh so hard when I watched this.

    Im still wondering why the English dub bothered to establish the accents if they were going to get rid of it ten minutes in.
    For the sub it makes sense because it's for the audience convenience, but for dub they were already speaking English..so why drop the whole French and Japanese accent to being American? Other characters in the show have accents..like English and French, but why change the main characters?

    • @TheJRPictures
      @TheJRPictures  4 роки тому +251

      I think it was a matter of establishing the international nature of the show in a sense. Laurent's accented English in both sub/dub just seems to be there to communicate that he's French even though it seems arguable that he could probably speak it just fine without an accent considering his profession.
      Edamame's accent was a case of them needing to stick to the original Japanese script. Laurent (and a few other characters like Cassano) make some comments at Edamame about his English speaking skills and pronunciation well after the disclaimer that said all the conversations were being translated to Japanese going forward so a level of consistency needed to be kept in.

    • @mystque8754
      @mystque8754 4 роки тому +155

      They went for the accents in the beginning to let the audience know that they're both from different countries and the dialogue from multiple characters says “...nice accent” or something along those lines to Makoto, if they didn't establish it in the beginning those lines wouldn't make sense. And I think they dropped the accents for the dub just because it will be hard for the VA's to do the accent all the time and personally, I had a hard time understanding what they were saying at first.

    • @the-ma-an
      @the-ma-an 4 роки тому +26

      Yeah I agree. It was kind of confusing coz I thought they were gonna drop all accents completely.
      Spoiler below
      I also found it kind of immersion breaking that Cynthia didn't have a British accent in the past, since they gave every other British character an accent. Like it makes sense for present Cynthia to not have the same accent to show how much she's changed, but it didn't make as much sense for her younger self.

    For people who're complaining about Edamame not having an accent, it would've been super difficult to understand what they are saying if they kept the accent. Laurent is fluent in multiple languages so him having an American accent is no problem. But if Edamame's VA kept his Japanese accent, I doubt we'd understand everything he was saying.. I'm sure we've all heard Japanese people talking in English with their accents and know what that sounds like. People would go back to watching subs.. And I think we can overlook Edmame's perfect accent. I mean, in the original, they passed with the Japanese saying that it was English XD *GREAT PRETENDER* I must say. It would be unfair to complain for a perfect dub if the original itself has flaws.

    • @d3ath_st4rz
      @d3ath_st4rz 3 роки тому +20

      But don't you think that might have made it perfect? The flaws and language barriers and accents would have been wonderful to see, and added a level of comedy the audience usually doesn't get to see, since many characters from areas that don't speak english have very clear american/perfect english accents. I feel like they could have pushed and played with the accents and the show would have been just as good. I feel like it actually would have made it better.

    • @raygardner5721
      @raygardner5721 3 роки тому +38

      @@d3ath_st4rz yes, having accents would've made the dub perfect. But it's still great the way it is now. They did keep Edamame's Japanese at the beginning and that's something you don't see in other anime dubs. It's already different from typical anime dubs and it's good. And it doesn't seem fair to me to ask for something that *might seem* perfect for the time being. Like I said before,
      1. it would've been super difficult for the VAs to use an accent.
      2. the viewers won't understand anything and go back to watching subs. Don't believe me? Go watch Hetalia with dub.
      3. Hiring a VA who can do accents well can be really expensive. And anime dubs don't really have a high budget...
      it's funny how people hate dubs most of the time and keep looking for flaws, but at the same time expect more from the dub ignoring the fact that the sub didn't even try to be accurate... they're both good. they both have flaws. But it's unfair to complain about the dub only, when the English VAs and directors worked just as hard as the Japanese and produced an even better result ..

    The dub would’ve been 100% perfect if Edamura and Laurent just kept their original accents.
    In the sub it makes sense that everyone is speaking Japanese because to the viewers it’s Japanese but in the show it’s English.
    For the dub, it seems pointless for the va’s to do accents in the first episode only to immediately switch it to American accents.

    • @TheJRPictures
      @TheJRPictures  4 роки тому +139

      The point was that the dubbing team we're matching up to the the joke (of sorts) of the Japanese actors speaking accented English and then ultimately dropping it as soon as the show gave the indication to do so: twitter.com/stephaniesheh/status/1297561946841968641
      Otherwise, the entire transition into full English wouldn't have flowed as well in the dub when there's a sign literally on-screen saying the language is going to change. Laurent in my opinion doesn't seem to use his actual French accent all the time, only when its convenient for him (or for the show to illustrate that he's French), he's a con man playing multiple different roles after all.
      Now Makoto keeping his accent would've made some sense, several characters over the course of the story comment on his accent and pronunciation well after the transition happens.

      Agreed. I love this show but I was disappointed in this aspect. Especially edamura: even if the va couldn’t do a consistent Japanese accent, Laurent did say it didn’t sound very Japanese anyways. Laurent switching is slightly more ok since it’s believable he just whipped out his accent to sell the overly friendly French tourist act. I guess we can pretend that edamura is actually super good at English but Laurent/everyone is just screwing around with him which is why he gets pissed.

    They both sound the same, whats the different in picking the English audio if they still mainly speak Japanese anyway?

    • @TheJRPictures
      @TheJRPictures  4 роки тому +29

      Select lines between both dubs are different because separate actors are performing the accented dialogue rather than keeping it the same the entire time.
      Japanese: "What are you talking about? It was you who said it was my wallet."
      English: "What are you talking about? Weren't you the one who said it was my wallet?"
      Japanese: "You're a scammo right?"
      English: "You're a scam artist right?"
      Japanese: "Didn't the trip cost you more?"
      English: "The plane ticket cost more than that."
      Also they change the word "seiza" to just "sit cross-legged" to make the idea (even if it's not the right form of sitting) more understandable to a wider audience.
      Also when the disclaimer appears on screen to say that "Everything from this point will be translated to Japanese", the dub uses that transition to get rid of the accents in the conversation.

    • @ItzRocket18

    • @TheJRPictures
      @TheJRPictures  4 роки тому +23

      @@libertia They are technically speaking English for the majority of the show. The anime just opted to translate everyone's conversations into Japanese for the audience's convenience, hence the "Everything from this point will be translated to Japanese" sign that appears halfway through their conversation. So the English dub is more true to the show in a sense.

      @@TheJRPictures For me, it was also to show that for some characters, there's a significant language barrier between them.
      You'll probably see some more of this when the dub gets to the third case, as Edamura cannot understand French, specifically the people running the boarding house he's staying at (they are speaking only French for most of their dialogue, then get switched to Japanese for the same audience convenience).

    I honestly have no idea which to follow. I would have been 100% on board with dub if they kept the accents (I know the reasoning but I still believe they should have kept it). Just like Hetalia dub, the accents make the show shine even if Japanese voices are more pleasant, it really gives you an immersive experience.

    • @goji253

      @@renamamiya5997 Likely because it would have required voice actors that are fluent in Japanese but are also from the respective country (for example France) to be able to have a french accent WHILE speaking Japanese.
      And you try finding a french voice actor who speaks fluent Japanese with an accent. And the same process would apply to other characters with accents.

    The reason they don't have edamame speak with an accent in the dub after the switch is due to it sounding racist at that point. Like I'm sure of it.
    The joke is that to make it easier for the audience from here on out you get one language xD
    Chiaki did a great job with the English in the sub and it is absolutely not racist, its just English in a japanese accent. If i need to explain to you why it would sound off for an american to do a Japanese accent...
