Hello, I saw your video & I used to do a lot of trailer & truck camping. Let me pass on some things that I learned that might help you in your journey. 1) Get stuff you need at a camping store for backpacking. It's small, compact, & light weight. 2)Get splash guards for your truck. It'll help keep you & your rig clean. They work. I know. Also grease your ball & the cup on your hitch. This will help prevent metal on metal grinding. 3) When parking for the night, park headlong into the wind. That way if a storm comes you won't have to worry about a side wind ripping off your camper shell. Plus, if anything comes bouncing towards the truck, since you have a slimmer profile, it might miss you. If it does hit, the front of the truck is reinforced. 4) Use bug spray on the interior doors & windows/ screens openings to help keep bugs out. Use wasp & hornet spray around & on your tires to help keep critters out. Basically, all points of contact on the ground. 5) An inch is a lot of room. Learn how to stack & get used to sand & dirt. Use floor mats to put your shoes on too 6)Air out your sleeping area every morning or often. In an enclosed space the air gets stale. 7)Use a small fan to circulate the air in your sleeping area. This will help prevent hot & cold spots from forming & help prevent condensation & mold & mildew from forming. 8)Use a solid hooded sweatshirt. Draw the hood tight when you sleep to help encapsulate body heat. It can double as a pillow/ dirty clothes holder/ gear carrier. I hope this helps. Great vid, thanks for sharing. Drive safe. 🤠
If anyone is thinking of doing one of these raised bed platforms with slide-out doors over the tailgate, don’t. These designs are ridiculous. What about when it’s raining? What about when you have to get something out of a drawer in the middle of the night? You have to lower your gate and go outside? This design saves you no space, it loses a ton of interior space making it uncomfortable to spend time inside (rain again), and is simply over engineering the whole thing. Do an L-shaped cabinet configuration where you sleep on one of the cabinets, with all drawers easily opening within the truck. Snug as a bug in a rug.
Drums and bass live CHAKANOWANNA Some people have lift ups from the bed to access storage, or sliding doors on the side of the bed, but I get your point when it comes to sleeping two. I’ve designed and redesigned mine a hundred times (I’m still to start working on it because I didn’t buy my truck yet!), and the designs where the width of your bed take up the entire width of the truck bed seem impractical to me for several reasons, not to mentioned raised. These designs are basically sleeping cocoons, and you can’t spend any time in the truck bed unless you’re actually LYING in bed. To me, you need SOME moving around space where you’re comfortably sitting upright, to prepare food and eat in there, take a pee, work your laptop, etc. And with the heavy rains I get in South Florida, I know there are going to be many hours where I’m literally trapped in the truck. Of course, to each his own, but I figure an L shape sleeping/storage cabinetry makes the most sense, leaving some open space. I’m going to be mostly going solo, but a second person could bunk on the floor of this open space via foam, sleeping bag, etc. Look, I’m no one to talk yet...because with me, it’s still just talk now...but I’m convinced you gotta think your plan through to the umpteenth degree, not wasting an inch of space: I plan to use 4 toy chests, with lifting lids. Two will run left to right against the front of the bed/the cab, and two run front to back along the vertical length. (I’m getting an 8’ bed.) These allow access to storage by lifting the lids, but I’m also going to make a cut-out in the front of each chest with a sliding door. I’m going to have a s-load of storage space while also having an open area, building a small tabletop over the exposed wheel well to hold an air conditioning. Because without an AC in Florida, you suffer. Since I’m a small guy, I’ll be able to sleep on the left-right chests-I don’t need to sleep the long way. Consequently, the chests running the vertical will house my kitchen.
DaHamburglarGT You can also hang storage cabinets from the ceiling if you get a roof rack. You just have to tell them to use extra long bolts, and put those bolts through upper cabinets. I’m just saying, you gotta think this through when the weather is bad, having to pull those slides out in pouring weather.
+The College Woodworker thanks man! great channel also I subscribed! Those are sick trucks, I am going to most likely just poly the top and the drawer fronts, and then paint the rest of it white with some old paint I have. trying to build it on the cheap to show people what you can do with just some junk wood and such.
As I was watching I noticed your roof rack above the camper shell. I have been thinking about making one for my truck. Did you have any issues getting it under the camper shell and still keeping it sealed?
Yes exactly. Angle iron on left and right sides flat on the inside with threaded inserts installed in the bed itself. Then bolted through the angle iron that held that rack into those bed threaded inserts
Back in the 1960's a great uncle had built a camper for his truck with cabinets like your drawers for everything needed for cooking and on the sides holes for clothing and such and still had room for two on top inside to sleep in sleeping bags. I don't remember exactly how it all worked or what dimensions they were because when the tailgate was down it was even with my face. I would stare at it in amazement every summer. I do know finding you video reminded me of happy memories, so Thank You.
Thanks for doing this on a smaller truck. Been thinking about doing this to my S-10. One thing that I might do different is make the center pullout full length of the bed. But thanks tons! BTW, I'm going to suggest going to HF and getting some of those interlocking foam floor pads to put on the top of it

I was impressed by your solar setup, do you have a link to the charge controller and other parts you bought off amazon? I would like to make one also.
+Into The Dirtshop Here's the charge controller I'm running now: www.amazon.com/JoyiQi-Solar-Controller-Regulator-Charge/dp/B00NAR1NM4/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1445526458&sr=8-6&keywords=charge+controller works very well. I dont see a problem with that!! just make sure you secure them well enough!
it would depend on what kind of gear are you planning on storing. 2x4s will guarantee you a lot more of stuff to place in the drawers.
