- Victor Wooten performing "I Want You Back" at the BAM Rhythm & Blues Festival at MetroTech in Brooklyn, NY 6-24-10.
The band featured:
Victor Wooten - bass
Regi Wooten - guitar
Derico Watson - drums
Bob Franceschini - saxophone
Steve Weingard - keyboards
This guy knows how to make that bass sing. Not just a bunch of technical mumbo-jumbo. His playing conveys some true emotion.....not just a display of technique......love it
He let the bass do the singing. Amazing all the way around and made it look effortless
Heard this for the first time when i was school, and it made me fall in love with music. Here i am 15 years later having finally had a chance to see and meet Victor. Such a legend.
Man, Victor plays so effortlessly. Smile on his face as he channels the love from the greater source of light and positivity! One of the greatest musicians of our era, and up there in the best musicians of all time category too.
Victor Wooten's bass playing brings me genuine joy. I mean brilliant, soul lifting happiness. This is such an amazing song as well. How someone wrote that melody, i will never know. I've been playing guitar for around 5 years now, this is still incredible.
victor and regi are seriously two of the nicest and happiest people i've ever met. also two of the most talented people on earth
That is true musicianship. He plays a relatively easy melody, but makes it sound SO lyrical and soulful !
That rendition was pure ART...
My bass just slapped me and walked out my house.
Good one, buddy! Still chuckling.
Man, I know that feeling!! 🎶😂😁😖
He should chill his bass. No reason to lose a string.
Are you ready to say "bass, i want you back" yet?
Hahahahahahahaha
This was fun to watch, Vic's a monster! Too bad the sound wasn't a little better.
It gives an old school vibe !
victor wooten thee BADDEST bass player ON THE PLANET!!!
I love how victor makes you feel great through his bass playing. Its inspiring!
Awesome and I;m always in awe of Victor. But a little puzzeled too. This song had one of the best bass lines that ever came out of Motown and it would'a been great to hear Victor do a verse with something close to the the original bass line. Even if you don't like bass soloists you can't knock this legond!
What kind of idiot could give this a thumbs down???? Incredible!
Saw Wooten and the band last week in Charlotte. There's just nothing like seeing him play this 4 feet away from where you're standing...you can't help but smile.
This man makes the most infectiously joyful faces when he plays. Go to 1:14 and tell me that isn't a look of pure musical brilliance combined with a message of 'oh yeah, come on in!'
I initially wanted to work but there is too much vibe in this song ! 🔥
I don't even play bass I'm a guitarist and I consider this guy one of the all time grand masters of music, because he just didn't study scale and memorized patterns and shit! no he went beyond and actually got fluent in the language of music, literally like a second language, his instrument being like our vocal chords!
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow! My mind just got blown.
I don't care how long it takes. I'm learning this.
The face Victor pulls is the one I have right now!! I love this genius!
I think he could probably play the original bassline, Gary. -__-
His phrasing on the melody is amazing.
Yeah!!! I almost can hear Michael singing there!!!
victor wooten is the victor wooten of bass just that
Victor has truly been blessed by God with the most amazing talent on the bass guitar.
I think I just fell in ❤ with the bass. #bassgoals
The eternal love and respect of everyone here?
victor wooten is my role model
Victor is just a freaking monster
This is so awesome. I love victor man, never heard a bass that has affected me emotionally like wooten's.
Sounding awesome thank you

victor thank for visit mexico city you are the best!!!
Such a gifted musician.
Vic is such a monster. Here I thought I was cool that I can play the bass line. He is playing the entire melody. I need to woodshed more. He makes everything look so easy.
When did he swear? He doesn't say fucking bass, he says funky bass :)
YEA WE KNOW HE IS A GREAT BASS PLAYER BUT WHAT IS DOING IS AN INSULT THE GUY AT MOTOWN WHO CAME UP WITH THE ACTUAL BASS LINE. HE IS JUST TRYING TO IMPRESS.
@@JohnMorris-ge6hq relax he’s just playing the vocal part on bass instead of the bass part
GODDAMN IT!!! his note selection, his feel, his touch... what a magic!!!!
Incredible
Joyful noise! Greatest bass line ever!
So good. I want to learn this song and have it sound as good as that
this is so awesome
You put it perfectly.
Victor Wooten master the skill of playing the bass guitar very well.
The best bassist on the planet right there. He has so much soul that he broke a bass string during a solo. Nobody does that shit.
oh the clipping. great vid anyway;)
Nicest intro to this song so far.
I love it that your using a bass to play melody.
At least you choice a song that us mere mortals can learn ;)
Victor is amazing...............
Le talent à l'état pur !!! Bravo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That awkward moment when its been 7 months since I wrote that last comment and I still cry at trying to learn this.....
これは上手すぎる!
プロだ!
Beautiful!
Wow! Thats made me dance hahaha
Basist amazing
Broke his wrist and still kept strumming... what a bad ass
idolo master!!!!
@ka8911 Thanks for sharing! Yes, Victor Wotoen definately was inspired by Stanley Clarke for the tenor tuning. Keep rocking!
The master!
My life long goal is now to find that tone
dude strums the guitar soooo weird lmao
The only thing weirder is that the guitar lacks a head altogether.

Headless guitars (particularly basses) are actually quite common since (Ned) Steinberger started making them in the late 70's. It eliminated weight on the (usually unbalanced) neck and the tuning machines are mounted on the tailpiece with a much finer gear ratio ( threads of 40:1 as opposed to traditional 18:1) Unfortunately, Ned later licensed his name to several companies that basically built trash with his name on it Can't tell what ax he's playing, but it is so drenched in chorus it makes no difference. I'm not trolling, I just play (real) Steinbergers and thought you may be interested. Cheers!
MegaVoodooChile Thanks! I actually didn’t know. Have never seen one. :)
Xavier Leeds you might be intrested to know that it is victor wooten brother
Xavier Leeds He meant that it is Victor Wooten's brother. His name is Regi Wooten.
Me And My Brothers Did This I Was Singing My Dad Said We Are The Next Jackson 5
♬ Alright now! Yall betta play dat! ♬
カッコよすぎる
My school was down the block 😁
SWEET!!!!
look at him enjoying it...
Fair enough. I probably should have kept that comment to myself anyway. He does sound good in any case.
Peace.
Legends!!!
How are those strings tuned and held in place if that guy in the black hat has no head on the guitar
+Roblox and fnaf Gamer The tuning is done from the bottom of the guitar.
バケモンかよっていうくらいうまい
いや、うまいを通り越してる
too sick
my fuckin god, it's awesome!!
damn, this is something Id love the tabs for
très très bon bassiste je kif!!!
Regi is totally a boss
素晴らしすぎる
That's Regi Wooten. I think he started off playing bass if I'm not mistaken. That's how I strum guitars whenever I pick them up, and I'm a bassist. That might have something to do with it... Kinda just feels right
magnifik!!!!
Try watch without smiling.
Victor ,did you listen to Stanley Clarke and Jaco growing up?.Fantastic man.Whats your man using for a capo on that saw off guitar? Love it all
NICE
@Harbec The tenor tuning (ADGC) is very fun! :) It's a very nice musical range and makes chords very pretty. I think Vic got the idea from Stanley Clarke, who's been using a tenor bass since the 70's. But this bass is strung normal. (EADG) The tenor bass is sitting to the right of his amp in this vid. It's a mid-80's Fodera with a maple top and a little yin-yang inlay with an inlaid banner that says "Victor L. Wooten."
This is awesome. But as awesome as it is, I think for this song it would've been more impressive for Victor to play Jamerson's bass line than to play the melody. Hell, he could incorporate both the vocal line and bass line in to one super awesome bass solo arrangement (this is Victor Wooten after all). It just doesn't make sense not to honor a true bass hero while covering this song, on the bass...
Wow, I didn't know that! Thanks for the clarification.
***** Yep, this is a Wilton Felder bassline, not Jamerson.
Anthony Petrucci James version just sounded alot better
I would think the same thing if victor didn't play that so well, I mean he got every detail of what Michael Jackson did vocally. He could have just played the bass line, but he chose to do something far more impressive
B Smooth James version? What are you talking about?
i agree
ohhhhhhhh yeahhhh
wow
My basses are asking me why they don't belong to Victor Wooten and slapping me.
Does anyone know if there is a tab or sheet music for this?
REGGIE!!!!!
