My drive shaft just flew off doing about 40mph down a trail. Lucky i was only 5 minutes from home and limped it back in 4wd. Now the repairs start. Always something with these OG's🤦🏻♂️
That sounds exciting! Worst one I’ve had, was my secondary clutch flew off at about 40 because I re used the bolt. When they tell you to use a new bolt, it’s for a good reason 😂
Im hoping the bolt just backed out i hear that's pretty common. The shaft and splines look fine i didn't really get a good look at it yet though 🤞🤞. How many bolts hold it on?
@@SHOTS-FIRED there is one bolt that threads into the shaft coming out of the transmission, and then another bolt that threads into the shaft going into the rear diff.
it is a good idea and recommend to use new bolts on the drive and engine side of the shaft. Also if reusing red loctite should be applied . Pay attention to the washers as well. You should look up your parts scheme and make sure you are using the correct Belleville washers in the correct location. They have been upgraded. People have problems due to the fact not following the correct procedure/ correct parts and new bolts. Those bolts stretch, that is why they recommend new bolts on some models.
That’s a very good point. I hadn’t realized there was issues with the bolts, so I didn’t change them. I know the clutches have updated bolts, so I did change that when I pulled my secondary
I just did mine and I found it worked best to keep the diff loose and to just nudge it to the side a bit then screw the shaft onto the diff then do the front then bolt it all down

Make sure and have it in park so that you can really get them tight. One thing I’ll mention, is to get a wrench in there I had to kinda roll the machine to get the joint in a position where I could get the wrench in at a good angle. Make sure you are not like me, and DO NOT HAVE YOUR FINGERS IN THE JOINT while you are rolling the machine!!! 🤦🏻♂️ I was fortunate I didn’t snap my finger. Driveshaft just let go today while doing 50 mph down the trail. Gonna tear into it to at least get the old one out to limp it around the yard in 4wd for winter. It smacked the back of the gearbox, so thatll be fun assessing just how bad that is tomorrow 😅
Oh wow. Yeah fortunately mine let go as I was accelerating hard from a stop, and didn’t tear anything up. Good luck, and hope nothing major is broken on yours!
@@akgearhead I confirmed today, I put a nice gouge all the way through in the gearbox case and broke a couple ears off. Debating about whether to replace it or just weld it. Either way, looks like it has to come out. Got a video on gearbox removal? 😂
The service manual says the prop shaft bolts are loctited in and you have to use heat to get them out it also says to reinstall them with green loctite which is pretty tough stuff I'm hoping mine goes as well as yours did
@@akgearhead I work in vehicle repair at a large foundry and one of my trusted veteran mechanics told me to at least use blue loctite on the prop shaft bolts thank you for the video
@@akgearheadyou should use new bolts. If not. For sure at least red loctite. Also he doesn’t mention anything about the washers but his washer in the video is trashed . Should have been replaced. Look up your parts list and order the correct bolts on the engine and drive side. As well as the upgraded Belleville washers that canam calls out as well. If you didn’t , I highly recommend you correct.
Well about a month ago I did exactly what you did and yeah it's a little complicated but it's done I also changed the two rear axles they were making clicking noises as you turn left or right that went on fairly easy greased everything after about 300 km the clicking noise came back I went to the dealership and it seems that it's a normal thing now I told him well the first set lasted 8,400 km why they only lasting 300 he told me it's simply annoys don't worry about it and it's warranty for one year before the year is over come back I'll give you more axles now my buddy's got a 2022 he already replaced the axles around 4300 km and are already starting to do the clicking noise not that they're broken they're just doing the noise so there's something wrong with manufacturing just to let people know out there they're not cheap and these are toys and if people don't put money in these toys they will fall apart
Was yours on a first gen Maverick? I don’t have any experience with the newer X3’s. Mine has lasted 4k miles now, and everything I’ve had to replace is wheel bearings, axles, and the u joints. Pretty standard wear parts, but if you do a better job of keeping things greased than I have, stuff should last a lot better. Gotta remember like you said, these are toys, and we put them through hell
@@akgearhead like I said I called the dealership the axles are clicking going on after 300 km he says unfortunately he doesn't know why I think it's a manufacturing defect cuz the I'm not the only one that has this machine and everybody's now saying the same thing covid manufacturing or poor Manufacturing
@@pierrevilleneuve5445 I’d definitely agree with you on the Covid manufacturing. Been telling everyone not to buy new machines made in the past couple years. I just know they’re gonna be slapped together and have issues
That gonna be your seal. All the yoke bolts do is secure the prop shaft to the splined shafts coming out of the transmission and the diff. If you’ve got fluid leaking, that’s going to be your seal that goes around that splined end coming out of your diff.

Also, while you’re tightening it, may as well hit the u joints with some grease while you have everything apart.
I just took mine off. Just crawled under it and took the guard off. Makes it way easier

Well I can confirm I did not use loctite when reinstalling, so hopefully they don’t come loose 😂

Is it possible for the diff to leak due to a loose yolk bolt? Or would it be that the seal is weak?
That gonna be your seal. All the yoke bolts do is secure the prop shaft to the splined shafts coming out of the transmission and the diff. If you’ve got fluid leaking, that’s going to be your seal that goes around that splined end coming out of your diff.
It makes it so much easier if you take the gas tank out
