We should look at the money China spent on EV as a social investment. It is not something the capitalist west would do. China doesn't subsidise an industry to make it profitable. The motive has always been for improving people's living. The much spoken air pollution (smog) in China was the trigger point for a move towards EVs, instead of fossil fuel cars. Who can blame a country for looking after the health of her citizens?

China has not invested only in the EV industry -- or for that matter any industry. That is literally the tip of the iceberg or the icing on the cake. What China has done is invested in the basic Infrastructure of human capital. Food, Housing, Energy, Transport, Healthcare, Advanced Education. The net result is you have the largest, most technically educated population that is not worried about day to day subsistence and can focus on creating the world of the future.

The difference between China and USA is that USA spent 4.5 billion dollars, and two years time, and got 7 electric car charging ports to show for it while China spent their investment and have over twelve thousand car charging ports and leap-frogged US in EV, solar power, and battery technology. When the US buyer imports goods subject to tariffs from China, they pay the tariff to the US government. This cost, along with any markup, is typically passed on to the end consumer, meaning consumers ultimately bear the burden of tariffs through higher prices. The Chinese seller, however, does not directly pay the tariff; it's the importer in the US who bears that responsibility.
China does not suffer the consequences of tariffs. It is the US consumers who are being punished by having to pay higher prices.
In 2012, President Obama, as part of his plan to double the U.S. share of the world's solar panels from 5% to 10%, imposed tariffs of up to 249% on solar imports from China. In response, China retaliated by imposing import restrictions on polysilicon from the U.S. At the time, the U.S. held a 50% share of the global polysilicon market, which has since dropped to under 4%. The U.S. share of the world's solar panels has dropped to under 2%. China has promised to retaliate as strongly in response to new tariffs.

However, the U.S. doesn't produce most of the goods that are imported from China and so, when people have little choice, they will still pay the extra for what they can get. In the world of global economics where there are so many products and raw materials that are inter-related with one another from different sources, it is not so easy to use simple solutions such as trade sanctions, barriers and tariffs to protect one's own industries as it once used to be. The world has become far more inter-linked and shrunk in size than ever before and no one can exist as "an island, isolated unto itself".

US is not wrong is having a containment policy. However, it is not containment of China but containment of its own political hubris and frivolous spending on 'defense and military adventure'. Doing this and re-channeling its vast resources into productive technology, research, education, infrastructure and health, would re-vitalize its population and economy. This should be its longer- term strategic policy.

One thing US politicians should understand is that Chinese government has no hand in greed it has only one purpose and that is to better peoples lives and after improving 800 million population out of poverty now they are expanding globally to improves everyone lives. China only started ev evolution when its peoples were choking of population as they were worlds factory so they shifted to eco green technology and electric cars it never did it to compete with the world it only did to improve their peoples lives. This is core difference between china and us politicians. If these politicians in us are not replaced soon they will drag us to war or be most isolated from the world while the us population suffers from high price and sub par products. US is not prepared for whats to come while china has been preparing everything for decades with only one goal that is to improve their peoples lives. Now china has moved to next phase ese no longer do menial works all have been uplifted to a technocratic society so in the future china will make everything from the cheapest to the most expensive and they will provide what the population of the country requires. It is a really good scenario for the world

Mr. Walker, your views are mostly correct except you missed one key element of EV, namely SSB(solid state battery). 4 major reasons that only 8% total new car sale in US are EV. (1) EV prices are still higher than ICE cars. (2) EV with liquid LIB(lithium ion battery) catches fire. (3) driving range is short(260 miles) (4) recharging time is too slow(8 hr in home garage). SSB are expected to solve all of these problems: (1) do not catch fire (2) 700 - 1000 mile driving range (3) 20 min recharge time (4) no need to replace SSB during EV lifetime. Toyota, QuantumScape(in San Jose, CA), and Solid Power(in Louisville, CO) plan to commercialize SSB in 2026 - 2027. Biden administration should support 2 US companies to speed up commercialization by providing money. Yet Biden and his assistants are not smart enough to do so. They foolishly sent money to Ukraine to fight a lost war. Chinese company CATL, the largest supplier of liquid LIB in the world is about 4 y behind Toyota, QuantumScape, and Solid Power on SSB.
