    honestly, i really liked your analysis on how they affected you because you don't shy away from the fact that as canadian citizens, y'all benefit from colonialism

    I think you're a bit unfair on Hayes. He was very much for Reconstruction, but at the point of his election it was incredibly unpopular and a lot of federal troops had already been withdrawn from the South; only a few remained. Combine that with the super-close election results, only 11 years after the end of the Civil War. He was practically forced to do the Compromise of 1877, as much as it was obviously a terrible decision.
    I like Hayes generally as a person, he was a kind guy, he was for African-American civil rights, meritocracy, he was a teetotaler and he loved his wife. As a president he wasn't great unfortunately, but he did put in effort to try and protect the rights of African-Americans through vetoing bullshit anti-black laws from southern Democrats, as an example. Unfortunately the Democrats were too powerful and/or got around them in other ways. His Native American policy was awful though, that is correct.
