How Danny McBride Made An Entire Career Playing The Same Character

- Danny McBride is a powerhouse no one saw coming. Whether it's Eastbound and Down, This Is The End, The Righteous Gemstones, or any of the other insane comedies he's in, Danny McBride brings a unique ability to every project. The ability to play himself over and over to great success. Much of what makes Danny McBrides characters stand out, is how much of his own personality comes through each time. He's truly unique, and no one can replicate what he brings to the table.
#dannymcbride #eastboundanddown #therighteousgemstones #nerdstalgic
Every character he plays screams "asshole with a heart inside".
That's true!
Except when he played himself in This is the end
thats why he's so real and likeable
@@robertford5711 idk he was more likable to me than most of them in that movie 😭😭 when he woke up he didnt know they were rationing
Yeah he goes through this time of thinking he’s the best thing since sliced bread and then believably gets humbled 😂
He doesn’t just play the same character in everything he does, he’s created a universe in which everything he’s made is connected.
Ding ding ding exactly just like his role in far cry lol 😂😅😆
Danny McBride is married to the game
gasp! maybe he is!
The rapper?
n hip hop we say "that's a bar"😂
I thought that was Stephanie who was married to the game
There are so many IRL Danny McBride stories that really prove who he is as a person when the cameras are off, but two of my favorite are both involving The Righteous Gemstones.
First: When Adam Devine was asked to come over to hang out as opposed to an audition, (as Danny was already familiar with and a fan of Adam's work on Workaholics) strangely, Adam was not met with a chorus of laughter and the clinking of drinks from close friends of Danny that he was seemingly invited to. Instead, when Adam arrived at the given address, he was met with an empty room, containing only a shrubbery, from behind which Danny popped out and screamed
"Boo! *Laughs* Hahaaaaa I scared you, Fucker!"
The second story is about how every time you see John Goodman looking disappointed and exasperated with his hands crossed in front of his mouth when playing Eli Gemstone, it's actually an attempt to stay in character because there are an average of 50 takes for every Sunday Lunch scene on account of how many different off the cuff jokes Danny, Edi, and Adam are making, he is trying not to laugh.
i love vice principals so much. i feel like it’s overlooked whenever i talk to people about the mcbride shows. they either skipped it or never heard of it but watched eastbound and gemstones
so good
I watch it at least once a year. So good
Cancelled too soon.
@@JazzYachtrockeri thought they only set out to do 2 seasons of vice principals?
It wasn’t cancelled. It was a planned 2 seasons. All written at once. And filmed all together too.
McBride works because he is all ego without any of the malice you'd normally get from lunatics. He's super full of himself but he's not scared to make sacrifices for the people he cares about.
Actually, that's a very poignant take.
@@charliewilson4203 Yeah. Like in his introduction in This is The End, he's making a massive mess and not caring about it, but he's doing it to make breakfast for his friends without realizing the world is coming to an end around them.
Spot on
It’s not, and that’s not what poignant means.
Not remotely
"Mother Nature just pissed her pantsuit!" -Tropic Thunder
hell yes
He over here making a fuckin sweater I'm trying to put tiger balm on this jungles nuts
“thats the signal!!!”
Duck yea
I fucking love Danny Mcbride man is a comical genius
He's so great
Bro also wrote the Halloween reboot movies. What can't he do?
Every year or two I rewatch the entire Eastbound series. Always laugh like it’s the first time watching. It’s just soooo gd good. 😂
His small role in “Up in the air” was actually a great underrated dramatic role, it was so sad, i wanted to hug him
Every once in a while he pops up in something against type and nails it
Up in the air with George Clooney? I’m drawing a blank right now, can’t remember him in that at all.

The fact that he and his amazing team of friends and collaborators are able to write so utterly human and relatable characters (instead of one-note caricatures like less talented people would) never ceases to amaze me. E&B, VP and Gemstones are brilliant, I hope whomever at HBO saw the potential there got a fat check.
The Righteous Gemstones has not recoeved the attention tin deserves given the show’s quality.
About 5% of it is cringy humor but the rest is wonderful mix of comedy, drama, quality production, interesting editing with flashbacks (including digital de-aging), fantastic performances, and complex interesting characters in a genuinely captivating plot.
I think some actors’ personalities are just so strong that it shines through in every character they play. Denzel comes to mind.
Que Denzel laugh, uhhahaa
The Righteous Gemstones is one of the best things on TV, and I think so much of its charm comes from how it almost an anthology of itself. Each season has its own big Plot Problem, but it never feels disconnected or unnatural in its progression & resolution. Every season finale feels like it could fit perfectly into either being the series end or the lead up to another season.
The plots of each season just keep building the absurdity of the whole show, but it’s also very heartfelt. Kelvin and Keefe’s storyline in particular just gets me right in the feels, while also being ridiculously entertaining.
I love it because the signature Danny McBride energy makes you crave more and more, but it is also completely satisfactory as it is. He’s a magic maker in comedy.
McBride tv gets funnier with repeated viewings. There’s always an hilarious expression or tone of voice I’ve missed o forgotten.
Danny McBride carried Land of the Lost on his back!
Dude is so chaotic that is entertaining
hell yes
For some reason I always experienced Eastbound & Down far more as a drama than a comedy.
Probably because that's how Kenny sees it too.
Danny is also an excellent script doctor in the same ilk as Carrie Fisher.
That's a great comparison
At this point, I don't even care about the topics anymore. I just want to hear an expert passionately rant about something.
That's the problem, how do you know who's an expert and who just speaks and sounds convincing?
Eastbound and Down and This is The End are still hilarious
agreed!
Also pineapple express!

Righteous gemstones is worth several watches
@@austinshafted8182 will check it out thanks 😊
Thank you for this. Got some good stuff to catch up on.
And every character slaps no cap 😂 funniest man ever
Vice Principals really got me interested in both Danny and Walton. I ended up watching The Righteous Gemstones right after and was met with an incredible surprise when Walton showed up as Uncle Baby Billy.
Those 2 actors are seriously phenomenal.
Also I know it'll never happen but I would love to see a movie where Danny McBride and Robb Wells play brothers who were separated as kids. Danny growing up in the south and Robb growing up in Canada. They eventually meet when their Dad dies and the will is being sorted.
I just think they both look like they could be related. Especially when Robb has his Ricky look going on.
Ever since Hot Rod, he by there on out, became on of my top 5 favorite comedians. He might be my #1
Chiming in as a fan of the Foot Fist Way. Danny excels at playing roles that make us uncomfortable, but I think that uncomfortableness comes from a very real and relatable place. As someone who personally did martial arts, the Foot Fist Way is definitely based on real people.
The best guy and crew in “Hollywood” aka South Carolina!
i rewatch eastbound and down like multiple times a year if you ask me its one of those rare comedic shows that is perfectly easy breezy to watch doesnt have 10 plus seasons of worn bits and just a solid comfort show in general especially owed to dannys performance 👏
Lol the first clip is my favorite Danny Mcbride scene ever. I feel like I do that in fights. Start yelling and realize I'm being an asshole so start apologizing while yelling hahaha
I just watched Vice Principal amazing lmao
He is someone you see and know no matter what, his part will always be good
Danny is an amazing actor and writer. Love that he’s been filming in my home state SC!
You should do Noel Gugliemi as Hector next. The "Hectorverse" is very similar to this.
The only actor I can think of off the top of my head who embodies a character in the same vein frequently is Jason Mantzoukas. I’m not saying Rafi from The League and Kenny Powers are the same character, but more so that they embody the same kind of chaotic energy. Mantzoukas has some great performances too, but McBride is still the goat.
I love that I get to watch Kenny Powers do so many different shows.
Vice Principals and East Bound and Down are still some of my favorite TV shows that have been made in the last 20 some years
I think we all have an uncle that reminds us of Danny McBride in one way or another.
I've never heard of these shows but now I want to watch them
He's not the vice principal they wanted but it's the vice principal that needed.
What he lacks in range he makes up for with true originality and genuine character. Danny is amazing.
McBride and Goggins are fantastic and I laughed my ass off. ❤Danny.
So good
I love Danny McBride in the movies he is in. I didn't know he had so many shows. I've never even heard of those shows. I have a lot of great shows and episodes to watch now, thank you!
He is hands down the best comedic actor of all time. Everything he is in is gold
Danny McBride as Danny McBride in This is The End *chefs kiss*
He’s one of the funniest dudes alive.
Yall cannot mention Danny "The goat" Mcbride without mentioning his radio station on Blain county radio in gta 5. Dwayne Earl
a holy trifecta of shows. one of a kind
Danny is the man! I absolutely loved East Bound and Down!
Hey Nerdstalgic I was wondering could you do a video on a FX and how they keep churning out critical alciamed shows that just feel real and work
Oh, interesting. That's a fun idea. :)
@Nerdstalgic appreciate you I thought about it the other due to the bear being great and Atlanta and Dave keep up the great work
He has natural chemistry with everyone he works with, but for me, coupled with Walton Goggins, McBride is pure gold.
I think that most actors make a living playing the same character, probably different magnitudes of their own personality
Like literally how can you not love Danny McBride
Gonna need season 5 of Gemstones !
Praise Be to He 💎
HE MAY BE THE SAME CHARACTER IN EVERY MOVIE BUT I LOVE ANYTHING WITH DANNY MCBRIDE ABSOLUTE LEGEND
Even in the recent advertising commercials from like last year he’s hilarious
Man I just finished his shows and I’m here for all the Man-child stuff 😂 righteous gemstones is amazing!
Eastbound and Down is my favorite tv show ever
Definitely underrated he is a beast
I love Vice Principals. I was upset when it was over, but I haven't had a chance to see east bound or righteous gems but definitely will now 👍
I personally don’t find McBride that funny in a lot of the stuff he makes but his shows have such heart and are written so well I still watch them.
Gemstones shocked me with how good it was. They have some of the most uniquely funny characters in a tv show I’ve seen.
I watched him on Matt and Shanes secret podcast recently and even in real life hes like pretty damn similar to the characters he always portrays. He really does play like a caricatured version of himself.
fuckin genius man, loved him in 30 min or less as well
One of my favorite characters no matter what hes in
The video we needed😊
Danny McBride is different in gemstones. In gemstones he had pockets of doing the right thing and growing
You're telling me there's a show with Walton goggins and Danny McBride the Goul and the hick
His role in land of the lost is also really great
loved seeing him in this is the fkn end he really solidified his role as a really fkn funny asshole to the world
I feel a cult classic McBride movie not many people cover is “Your Highness”. I loved that movie lol it’s so bad it’s great.
Danny McBride, Craig Robinson been my favourite guys. They show up everywhere. They are naturals and flawed characters.
LOVE THEM BOTH
I could watch several different movies/shows with both of them in it. Comic gold.
I forgot about foot fist way… shit fucking funny.
I also love Your Highness. People don’t talk about it enough imo.
Gambys growth, however limited, was my favorite part of Vice Principals.
An absolute LEGEND 💯
Hes like vince vaughn. Just irreplaceable.
Rico from Hot Rod was my favorite
Vice Principles is ne of my favorite shows in years
He’s one of my favorites
Danny is the best
Holy shit...someone actually made the video...yessss
Dude is a legend
If you like him in one thing, you'll love him in everything. Dude is like cheese.
I may be the exception, but I really liked "His highness."
Danny is the goat
He is my favorite actor of all time
This is true for almost every actor.
Such a legend
McBride is like Shane Gillis’ older, more unhinged, brother
I’ve seen all of these when they came out 😂😂😂
He was great in Tropic Thunder
I’m on the last episode of the last season of Eastbound and Down😊
You could make a video with the same title except for name swapping McBride and make this a whole series. Gadot, The Rock, Reynolds, etc.
I’d like to think every character is either the same or related to each other
I really want to see Danny and Ricky from Trailer Park Boys get together
Love danny powers!
This can be said about a lot of actors/actresses lol.
Yeah. Like Kevin hart
@@andrewgrove1691it’s alot less complimentary to Kevin though. His shtick is as annoying as The Rocks.
He was great in 30 minutes or less.
My only complaint about Danny McBride is that when he talks I just hear my brother-in-law. They both have a sort of the same way of talking.
Damn now that you put it that way, you’re right. Your brother in law is so annoying and he’s not even a 1/100th of Danny. Epic comment
Well I guess it is time to watch Righteous gemstones
