There are so many IRL Danny McBride stories that really prove who he is as a person when the cameras are off, but two of my favorite are both involving The Righteous Gemstones. First: When Adam Devine was asked to come over to hang out as opposed to an audition, (as Danny was already familiar with and a fan of Adam's work on Workaholics) strangely, Adam was not met with a chorus of laughter and the clinking of drinks from close friends of Danny that he was seemingly invited to. Instead, when Adam arrived at the given address, he was met with an empty room, containing only a shrubbery, from behind which Danny popped out and screamed "Boo! *Laughs* Hahaaaaa I scared you, Fucker!" The second story is about how every time you see John Goodman looking disappointed and exasperated with his hands crossed in front of his mouth when playing Eli Gemstone, it's actually an attempt to stay in character because there are an average of 50 takes for every Sunday Lunch scene on account of how many different off the cuff jokes Danny, Edi, and Adam are making, he is trying not to laugh.
McBride works because he is all ego without any of the malice you'd normally get from lunatics. He's super full of himself but he's not scared to make sacrifices for the people he cares about.
@@charliewilson4203 Yeah. Like in his introduction in This is The End, he's making a massive mess and not caring about it, but he's doing it to make breakfast for his friends without realizing the world is coming to an end around them.
i love vice principals so much. i feel like it’s overlooked whenever i talk to people about the mcbride shows. they either skipped it or never heard of it but watched eastbound and gemstones
@@Nicko42069Yup and even if it wasn't a great trilogy to conclude that story, i do think each film is entertaining on their own. 'Kills' is just an absolute thrill-ride of a slasher and 'Ends' is basically a love letter to 'Christine' and everything else made by JC.
The fact that he and his amazing team of friends and collaborators are able to write so utterly human and relatable characters (instead of one-note caricatures like less talented people would) never ceases to amaze me. E&B, VP and Gemstones are brilliant, I hope whomever at HBO saw the potential there got a fat check.
The Righteous Gemstones has not recoeved the attention tin deserves given the show’s quality. About 5% of it is cringy humor but the rest is wonderful mix of comedy, drama, quality production, interesting editing with flashbacks (including digital de-aging), fantastic performances, and complex interesting characters in a genuinely captivating plot.
i rewatch eastbound and down like multiple times a year if you ask me its one of those rare comedic shows that is perfectly easy breezy to watch doesnt have 10 plus seasons of worn bits and just a solid comfort show in general especially owed to dannys performance 👏
Vice Principals really got me interested in both Danny and Walton. I ended up watching The Righteous Gemstones right after and was met with an incredible surprise when Walton showed up as Uncle Baby Billy. Those 2 actors are seriously phenomenal. Also I know it'll never happen but I would love to see a movie where Danny McBride and Robb Wells play brothers who were separated as kids. Danny growing up in the south and Robb growing up in Canada. They eventually meet when their Dad dies and the will is being sorted. I just think they both look like they could be related. Especially when Robb has his Ricky look going on.
What's ironic is someone like Gary Oldman, who completely disappears into characters, isn't someone you can think of memorable roles for, and when you see his name in the credits, you're not like 'yeah, I wanna see it for Gary Oldman'. But the guys who just be themselves every movie, if its appealing, will still bring in the money.
The Righteous Gemstones is one of the best things on TV, and I think so much of its charm comes from how it almost an anthology of itself. Each season has its own big Plot Problem, but it never feels disconnected or unnatural in its progression & resolution. Every season finale feels like it could fit perfectly into either being the series end or the lead up to another season. The plots of each season just keep building the absurdity of the whole show, but it’s also very heartfelt. Kelvin and Keefe’s storyline in particular just gets me right in the feels, while also being ridiculously entertaining. I love it because the signature Danny McBride energy makes you crave more and more, but it is also completely satisfactory as it is. He’s a magic maker in comedy.
Especially with the dramatic voice over ending of each episode. I think it’s the perfect balance of a Comedic Drama and not just a Dramatic Comedy like other similar shows.
Lol the first clip is my favorite Danny Mcbride scene ever. I feel like I do that in fights. Start yelling and realize I'm being an asshole so start apologizing while yelling hahaha
The only actor I can think of off the top of my head who embodies a character in the same vein frequently is Jason Mantzoukas. I’m not saying Rafi from The League and Kenny Powers are the same character, but more so that they embody the same kind of chaotic energy. Mantzoukas has some great performances too, but McBride is still the goat.
Chiming in as a fan of the Foot Fist Way. Danny excels at playing roles that make us uncomfortable, but I think that uncomfortableness comes from a very real and relatable place. As someone who personally did martial arts, the Foot Fist Way is definitely based on real people.
Any actor is replaceable. I'm not saying I dislike McBride, I'm just saying the character would have taken a different direction, maybe better, maybe worse, if McBride hasn't been cast.
@@phillydisco11 i love him too especially his shows but he's only got the one note. pretty damn good note tho and it almost always steals the entire show, but kenny powers may as well be a recurring character in everything he's done. kenny is my spirit animal..

I personally don’t find McBride that funny in a lot of the stuff he makes but his shows have such heart and are written so well I still watch them. Gemstones shocked me with how good it was. They have some of the most uniquely funny characters in a tv show I’ve seen.
McBride is a genius because all of his series have serious heart. Watching all of the first season of Eastbound will make you laugh until you cry, until the last five minutes when you're screaming at the screen in anger. Vice Principals builds up one of the worst, psychopathic villains, then redeems him and makes him the best friend. Gemstones especially is very in touch with the emotion those characters would showcase. It's also a show about immoral preachers that somehow doesn't mock Christianity. It's like the purest possible comedy.
I think he’s reached new heights with gemstones. For me, it’s got more heart and the character development is better. Also the entire cast is still knocking it out of the park after 3 seasons
I watched him on Matt and Shanes secret podcast recently and even in real life hes like pretty damn similar to the characters he always portrays. He really does play like a caricatured version of himself.
Every character he plays screams "asshole with a heart inside".
That's true!
Except when he played himself in This is the end
thats why he's so real and likeable
@@robertford5711 idk he was more likable to me than most of them in that movie 😭😭 when he woke up he didnt know they were rationing
Yeah he goes through this time of thinking he’s the best thing since sliced bread and then believably gets humbled 😂
He doesn’t just play the same character in everything he does, he’s created a universe in which everything he’s made is connected.
Ding ding ding exactly just like his role in far cry lol 😂😅😆
Yep, Your Highness is simply the beginning of the Dannyverse
What’s connected? I’ve watched all his shit even the stuff he doesn’t act in. Give me an example of a shared universe
That’s like saying anything Sandler makes is in the same universe lol
🤯🤯🤯🤯
Danny McBride is married to the game
gasp! maybe he is!
The rapper?

Am watching it for the first time at the moment, and i cant believe i missed this series. Every scene is amazing
His small role in “Up in the air” was actually a great underrated dramatic role, it was so sad, i wanted to hug him
