  • I noticed my brake lights were not working while testing my brake lights after the installation of a a trailer hitch harness.
My turn signals and hazard flashers were working - so my lights were not faulty. Your brake lights are the same lights / circuit as your turn signals and hazards. Here are the step by step procedures to track down any bad components or wiring gremlins.

This video saved me a ton of time. My brake lights were not working on my 92 YJ. Turns out the brake switch was only sending 5 volts to the lights when the brake was pushed, not enough to light the leds. The hazards and turns worked fine. Swapped out the brake switch and found a t connector spliced into the wire from previous owner which likely caused the drops in voltage.

Thank you for going to the trouble of recording this! I have the same problem, and was facing taking the dash apart to test the switch tomorrow. I've got the Haynes manual but my book is slightly different, and I couldn't figure out the color codes. But now that you've shown where the output of the switch plugs into the harness, I can test it there. And your poor connection issue may turn out to my problem too. Again, thanks.

Thank you for watching. I have the Haynes, Chilton, and Chrysler Service Tech Manual. The Chrysler manual is far more detailed. Its 2,158 pages

Thanks! I just watched this and I had the same exact problem and a bad connection was the problem.

Looks like cable plugs into the brake switch

I had the same problem. and I disassembled the switch and replaced lower spring with a stronger spring so the brake light goes back on

Thanks for posting this. Was your issue with all brake lights or just one? I have running lights working on all rears. Brake light works on passenger side and above spare tire but driver side is not working when brake is depressed. All bulbs are new. Just trying to narrow it down. Thank you!

On mine, the brake lights didn’t work at all. The running lights were fine.
Yours sounds like a bad connection by the drivers side light. I doubt it’s anything further upstream. Make sure the bulb is the right bulb, contacts are clean in the housing, then check the connector behind the housing in the tub. Use a volt meter. If you don’t have voltage at the connector, then it’s further upstream.
My lights are LED so I don’t remember if the stock bulbs are multiple filament, or if there’s multiple bulbs.

Ok, thanks so much! I’ll check for voltage and the connectors. I just replaced with LED bulbs and the passenger side works fine so I’m sure it’s a connector issue. Neither turn signal works with the LED so I’ll have to replace the flasher as well. I appreciate the video and the reply!

Hey! Love the video it’s helping a lot! I’m having the same issue you are where every other light works just not the break lights. I tested the break light switch just as you did and it passed my question though is when you tested the C218 11 wire part was that a plug that you unplugged and put the positive lead into and grounded the other one? Thanks for the help!

Update I tested that harness I was talking ab and I’m only getting 3 volts not the 12 you were getting I’m not sure where to go from there

Sorry for the late reply. You will need to test the connections while the connector is still plugged in. The three bottom wires I believe. Make sure you have a good ground.

Where did you download your service manual?

Thank you for watching. This version is available in one of my YJ facebook groups. Located under the files tab. The one I used is for a 95. Its very detailed at 2,158 pages.
