The American experience was neatly wrapped in this video, tax dollars spent on federal agencies to inform and protect the consumer only to be allowed and deflected by corporate overlords and loopholes.

I do need to do a video on that. You could almost go on forever with foods that are banned because of ingredients, the processing, the care, political reasons, or various other reasons. No one in any country is immune to some sort of interference. Very few people around the world are 100% self sustaining. If you "buy" or "trade" anything then you are not self sufficient. Thank you for watching!

Some years back, General Mills, the manufacturer of Trix cereals removed the use of artificial dyes and switched to natural sources like radishes, purple carrots, and turmeric for their coloring. They also stopped using high fructose corn syrup. So many people complained that they went back to the old recipe, fake colors and all. I personally didn’t mind the change and thought they tasted great.

Seems like they didn't spend much time researching or they just didn't care to get something that tastes close to the original without all the artificial stuff in it. My only guess is maybe they did have one that tasted better but it was more expensive. I'm more of a chocolate cereal person when it comes to sugary cereals. I didn't even know they did that

That would be difficult to. I would recommend having a vast amount of land so that you could be self sufficient. No reliance on anything at all that you have to buy from anyone. No machines, nothing. Just being able to grow, raise and harvest on your own. Very few people are able to do that around the world today. If you were in the late 1800s that would be a different story. Even if you are looking at native peoples still living free and as they wish they are feeling the pressure somewhere. Thanks for watching!

I happen to work at an organic foodstore and while I had always known a lot of American food contained things that were iffy, it wasn't until I started working there and taking their classes that I realised how bad it was. There's a lot of pesticides in conventional produce that's bad for you too. I always say if people knew what was in conventional food they would avoid it like the plague. I should confess though that there are certain foods that I know are bad but I still eat them anyway, on occasion. Mainly hot pockets :p But apart from that I always make it an effort to shop at organic foodstores, local businesses, and get things imported from the EU if I can.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  Рік тому +9

It really is difficult to avoid all of it. I guess the key is to minimize it. You have to put your trust in others unless you are lucky enough to have your own land and be able to grow food yourself. I even wonder sometimes what is mixed in organic foods as it is processed into bars or has some sort of preservative. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts.

    • @Chriserino
      @Chriserino Рік тому +1

there is a lot of bad stuff in organics too. In no way am I defending the laundry list of bads you provided. Organics isn't safe either. It isn't regulated to the same standard. tl;dr. If you're scared of what you put in your body, living in the states, you're royally screwed no matter what you do.
If you were smart and understood exactly what is in your food, you'd be more concerned about the percentage allowance of bugs and waste. The boogie man only scares those who don't really understand. Trans fats exist in breast milk. Doesn't cover all the categories and i cba to cover them all. The real boogie man is the government AND organics... That includes fda approved and government approved organics. If american products scare you, dont even touch organics.. It's the new wild west with no proper regulation in the states... You're better off non-organic than organic if you care about health. The boogie man only scares the ignorant, and the real boogie man only concerns the educated. We aren't behind, other countries fear the false boogieman.

Makes you wonder about the products that say "Not approved by the FDA" on their labels. Is it truly because the product has questionable ingredients, efficacy, etc.; or is it really because it creates competition for the companies that want to keep their own products on top? I believe it is probably the latter more often than not.

I'm always going to think back to that now obscure bit in 1985's "Peggy Sue Got Married" where Kathleen Turner tries to warn her little sister "not to eat the red ones (candy)!" and having to make up the excuse "because they'll give you red lips" as opposed to something worse! Quite topical for the time!

There was an older dye that was used that was much worse. Some foods like M&Ms didn't have certain colors for awhile because of things like that. It wasn't because they used them but the scare over a certain color caused concern and not the ingredient.

Thanks. yeah, I known about Genetic modified foods since the 70's, and I definitely know all about Monsanto, and it's corruption of our food chain. Many people think Monsanto has it's filthy hands in milk contamination but they go much further than that. Monsanto has been pushing over several years forcing many farmers to be forced to use their seed which is genetically modified to only grow if the farmer uses their pesticides. Over the last few years the seed have been seen showing up in Mexico, and farmers are not planting the seed, the seed is finding it's way (winds, birds etc) which is causing major issue's with wild grown corn.
This is just the tip of the iceberg.

There always seems to be confusion around this issue. The genetically modified seed is ok. The issue is why it has been modified. It's so it can thrive in a sea of pesticides. As long as MX does not soak it with pesticides, it's fine.

When I lived in Switzerland I used to buy Aunt Jemima pancake mix for my five year old, he loved it. Then one day, it was off the supermarket shelves. They said it was because the ingredients were bad, and most of the stuff was banned in Switzerland, Same with most cereals, BHT is banned in Europe too. Then, this Swiss shopkeeper, had American junk food delivered to the US army base in Germany, where he would cross the border to pick it up, sneak it back into Switzerland, and sell it in his shop to the Americans living overseas. Unbelievable .

Add a little bit of salt to your coffee to cut the bitterness, or add a teaspoon of honey. Another great sweetener is Stevia.
Stevia is a plant that is 300 times sweeter than cane sugar. It has Zero calories and No fructose, which is great for diabetics.
I grow Stevia on our Deck, but have to take it into our garage during our cold winter months.
Stevia likes warm to hot weather, but not in direct sunlight. The plant can grow up to 3 feet tall.
I take the leaves, put them into a coffee grinder and add it to my coffee to taste.
You can also buy Stevia in large quantities and use it just like sugar when baking.
My mother is diabetic and she controls her diabetes with her food and no longer needs medication.
Sweet N Low, Equal and the like are all chemicals that messes diabetes up. Switch to Stevia (the brand name is Truvia). Once she changed to Stevia she noticed a big difference.

Just to let Everyone know, when you see that something is ORGANIC, this means that the farmer can use any chemical that they choose, like chemical pesticides, fertilizers, etc. But at the end of harvest the farmer Must put organic fertilizers into the soil. This includes any animal fertilizers, such as cow manure.
I have a friend who makes his living growing ORGANIC PUMPKINS.
He uses all the chemicals that every other farmer uses on their crops, but after harvest he uses cow, chicken, horse manure when he tills the ground for the winter.
    So ORGANIC food i
    IS NOT chemical free .
The only way for you to get pure ORGANIC food is to grow it yourself.
The FDA will Not tell you this, nor will an ORGANIC farmer.
We spray our fruit trees every spring with copper and other chemicals to protect our trees from insects and disease. Every 2 weeks we spray our trees with pesticides, until they start producing fruit. We then use natural nicotine from cigarette butts soaking in water overnight and strained through cheese cloth into our sprayer. The insects will bite the leaves and die of nicotine poisoning. The ONLY fertilizer we ever use is steer manure. So our orchard is considered ORGANIC.

Thank you, Rhett. It's incredibly scary, (in my opinion), how the "powers that be" appear to blatantly contaminate our food sources while making them easily accessible. The underlying issue, (again, in my opinion), is profit within pharmaceutical companies, "big food/agriculture", and the medical arena. It's hard to find, (and sometimes afford), whole, unprocessed food. I appreciate that you've put this together. Let's hope one-day things will change for the best for our health regarding the foods we consume.

Good video. I'm in the UK and one of my biggest concerns after brexit was the USA exporting chlorinated chicken. Not to mention all the other additives allowed in the USA. Its the FDA who basically approve all food but then also approve all drugs. The USA has the highest rates of obesity, heart disease and cancer and the UK is not far behind now as in the past 50 yrs we've had so many American style fast foods and junk allowed.
I'd honestly avoid these artificial things, if they are illegal in the EU that's a good sign it's not fit for consumption.
I think it's really hard for Americans to make healthy choices as unhealthy food is advertised and also readily available. Having been to the USA several times I noted the portions were too big. We either grow, can, freeze dry almost All of our fruits and vegetables. We use natural herbicides, (such as we have friends who smoke cigarettes and they save their cigarette butts. We soak the butts in water. The nicotine that mixes with the water is then ran through cheese cloth and into our sprayer. When the insects eat our vegetables they die of nicotine poisoning). We then rinse our fruits and vegetables very well before eating or cooking them.
We barter our fruits and veggies with family to get our pork and beef. The livestock are always organically grown so our meat is always fresh and chemical free.
We try to eat all our food that we know to be free of chemicals.
Our water comes from our well which is softened and purified before it enters our house.
We try to cook our food using our cast iron skillet, which has been pasted down from my Great Grandparents. Our cast iron skillets are over 100 years old.
When using a cast iron skillet, some of the iron leaches from the skillet into our food.
While baking we always use glass, cast iron, ceramic.
For people who live in an area that cannot grow a garden, plant your vegetables in planters designed for house plants.
Invest in a Freeze Dryer so you can freeze dry your food and store them in Mylar bags with an oxygen absorber. This will allow your food to last up to 25 years.
You can also freeze dry meat. When freeze drying food, it retains 97% of the nutrients, whereas if you can your food you loose up to more than 50% of the nutrients and if you dry your meat (like jerky) you will loose more than 60-70% of the nutritional value, while adding too much salt.
You can also freeze dry hard candy if you have a sweet tooth. Freeze dried bananas, strawberries, blueberries, etc are natural sweet treats.
My wife Loves beets 🤮, so I cut them thin and freeze dry them for her to take to work for her mid day snack. We also make freeze dried sweet potatoes, mangoes, carrots, etc.
When buying chicken, buy whole chicken and cook the entire chicken.
Every time you buy chicken breasts, thighs, legs separately, it’s dipping in an acidic liquid each time they cut away.
We buy roasted whole chickens from Costco. Costco sells them packaged and deboned. We then freeze dry them. Just soak them in water and reheat them when you want to eat them.
