Sri Lankans rely on a very inefficient government service system, most of the important services like utilities are government owned and subsidized, because 80% of the people are poor. The government sector is corrupt, as well as politicians. No one is held accountable for any wrong doings. The rich 20% don't pay income taxes or property taxes like here in USA. There is no safety net for the poor. Rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer. Sri Lanka's tax revenue is one of the lowest in the world, their stock market does not tax on the profits investors make. At the end the country relies on loans and free money (aids) from developed countries, that is tax payer money like ours and still blame our country and other western countries for being capitalistic. In general Sri Lankans boasts a lot with little to none actual work. That's why their economy is heavily dependent on imports than exports. They import more than they can pay for, and our hard earned tax money is given to them as aid. I don't know to laugh or to be angry!

Me and my partner are visiting Sri Lanka in June and we are so worried that the fcdo/government is going to shut down the country to tourists due to the violence out there This means we would loose our flight money. Hi Olivia, To be honest its hard to say but i do recommend at least coming to Sri Lanka and see, if its bad at least you can stay in your hotel. Also please make sure to check the status of Sri Lanka a few days before boarding on your flight.
We've just returned from SL As per available data hardly any $$ left for imports meaning fuel for traveling and power could run out at any moment Very fluid situation Very unlikely they would find money in a week or so however negotiations are ongoing for bridging finance Hotels are running out of diesel to keep the places opened and massive lines for fuel give two to three weeks because everyone anticipate things to get worse before any better
