No huge protests as the previous months. Prices might be inflated, also negotiate anything and everything. Advise you and anyone to be aware of prices around the area before hand. Update about very recent protest : Some PM organized a pro government protect yesterday (yes Anti government protest also support by PMs)......and these 2 groups met on Galleface area....which end up really really bad. Both protestors have lot of casualties including pro government PM killed. People believe this pro government protestors are paid by government to inflict conflicts.

Basically any touristy town is safe. This includes Ella, Sigiriya, Arugam bay or any of the zillion small towns on the south with the pretty beaches. Stay away from cities

If not, just expect some disruptions to the public transport and other usual services in coming few days due to a planned strike, so you might want to plan for hired personal transport options. Keep in touch with the news as well, lot of live news feeds from Sri Lanka. The situation is bit tense and volatile, but as being said, the tourists will be totally fine subjected to few delays and disruptions. I don't recommend any tourist to come to Sri Lanka right now. Yes, we need more foreign currencies but without any stable environment in a chaotic situation, you can't enjoy or spend your valuable time freely. Let this situation calm down and make a decision after that but don't come hear right now.
So rules of thumb in any country pay in rupees and run from quotes in usd. As long as the locals don’t get greedy and raise the prices so high that its worst then before. You forgot to mention the most important part, that tourists cut in line for petrol so you don’t wait 6 hrs in line and lose a day. I myself rent a motorbike to get around. 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Sorry to say but the protests got a lot more worse today @Nadir On The Go as there were state sponsored attacks which made peaceful people destroy various ministers and members of parliament houses to be destroyed or burned down. So if you're visiting Sri Lanka be prepared and cautious for these situations.

Honestly it's hard to predict at this moment, but if there's no curfew or violent protests in the Negombo area when you get there, I think you can get to the tourist towns without much trouble, and then be fine in any of the beach towns/Ella/Sigiriya etc
