One of the most important parts of this video starts at 24:13 I live in Mexico City and MANY temporary and permanent residents do this.....they DO NOT interact with the locals. They are doing themselves a total injustice. Even though I live in an upper middle class neighborhood I avoid those upper class and high class stores, eateries etc. I eat in local family style restaurants and street stalls/produce stands. That's how you thrive.

There are so many variables to keep from going broke in Mexico. If you want to live in a popular expat location next door to other expats, expect to pay more. I live in one of those locations but I live on the edge of a "Mexican" neighborhood so the rents here are lower than where most of the "gringos" live. I admire my Mexican neighbors. They are friendly and hard working folks just trying to provide for their families.
Sheeesh! You hit the nail on the head with this one. I make pretty good money BUT I live in LA. This past month I have spent $3500 on rent, utilities, food an Uber. Uber is between $20-45 one way within a 10 mile radius. 1 bag of groceries is $100 for GMO, trash food. I spent at least $100 every single time I walk out the door. It's stressful. Thanks for this video because it gave me a moment of relief because I will be outta here in a couple of months and will be able to live a happy, soft life in Mexico. Thank you!
I've been in Merida for 4 months now and I see how easy it it to feel a financial crunch. It's not "cheap" per se. It is less costly but the costs can EASILY add up. I am trying to be wise.....more cooking at home is the way to go.
Yes, it is about living within one’s means. Get over the vacation mindset quickly. Review your budget regularly. Shop like the people who have lived here their entire lives, or for a lot of years. Make friends with locals - not everyone wants to be your friend, but a lot do. Through my mexican friends I have learned where to shop, where to get repairs. I am building a house and I constantly evaluate the budget and adjust - I have many years ahead of me so I have time to build in stages, watch material costs, work closely with the crew, understand building methods here (they are different that does not mean they are any better or worse - just different). See how others are approaching building, renting, purchasing. I have notices some expats want all the comforts of home in their new domicile and purchase a lot of bells and whistle extras (lighted mirrors, electrified window shades, really tall ceilings when a 3 meter ceiling will do the job. Lots of resources for expats on line. Learn from other’s mistakes, and people are willing to share their mistakes for the benefit of others. I appreciate the Scam Alert sites (TAKE THEM WITH A GRAIN OF SALT AS THERE ARE ALWAYS TWO SIDES TO A STORY). A great way to understand the lay of the land (not for everyone) is to volunteer with a local organization. The contacts one can make, the new friends, a sincere effort on your part will make a difference. Their is a lot of need and one can find something that is fulfilling and can help make a difference. My number one piece of advice is to learn Spanish. Listen to spanish, speak spanish, read spanish. The longer one remains dependent upon another language will struggle. The lack of Spanish may cause some level of anxiety and prevent you from venturing out into your new home, meeting people, or seeking language exchange. If you do not speak Spanish you may find yourself shopping in environments that are more comfortable (ie English speaking environments) which might inhibit your ability to find the best places to shop and remain on budget. Try using your Spanish as often as possible - you will find some English speakers will use their English because it is easier to communicate, or they want to practice their English, but persist. Use your spanish and let them use their English.
Most areas where Mexicans work for Americans they speak English. Here's some great advice from someone who foolishly had a gorgeous home near museums restaurants everything you'd want in retirement BUT switched the relationship dynamic. As a woman who controlled the money came from a self made millionaire father I married a man who came from an ignorant hillbilly family. We both busted our rears worked so hard numerous shifts we moved up house num 4 gorgeous I was there we always had money did things went on trips improved the house. He up and took an early retirement not discussed with me. I trying to keep the marriage we left that life I find myself in Alabama I HATE it we moved backwards the home we have is nothing and we will be lucky to get what we paid for it he's fine here he's reverted backwards. His big concern what to eat buying lottery tickets mowing the lawn WOW his nosey old lady but of what the neighbors are doing I couldn't care less. So folks if your wife or husband are good at money LET them handle it... DON'T retire and leave your 25 yr residence you love moving over and over you lose money. We have money because my father died and left me some. Now I am looking for any way to get out of this nothing to do I'm NOT growing old here place. Listening to his Corvette B's I told him you wanted a classic I bought you one you grew tired of it wanted a new one he had both then sold them. I look back and what you talked about GOD do I know it. He's fine watching the news and 48 hrs over and over. I miss life.

That's Capitalism and I only mentioned my mistakes so others don't do what I did now I'm not working I'm 60 yrs old I can't bring in what I used to and miss that gorgeous home on the hill great neighborhood area with culture and restaurants decorating our beautiful home. Actually I am reading up allot on moving to Mexico and you don't want to use Spanish allot. They will use whatever you use first. So IF you walk in a store speak English they speak English back. If you speak broken Spanish they will speak fast Spanish you won't understand.

You are awesome at discussing which kinds of mindsets adapt well, vs. which kinds of expectations can kind of undermine success there.). Building wealth is not (from) what you make, its (from) what you spend. Also, your health is your wealth. I like to think of eating like “spending” and exercising is like “saving”. I save more than I spend so I can enjoy having sweets without getting overweight. It’s a mental trick I used for years and thought I’d share it.
My husband and I have been living in Mexico for almost a year.We live a middle class Mexican neighborhood and we love it( I practice my spanish)!We barely take our car out because we just walk to get our groceries.We might go to Walmart to buy ramen and other things international(twice a month).
Thanks Jose. I have moved to Mazatlan two weeks ago from south Florida. The information you provide helped prepare me well. Everything you are saying is true. Love it here, do have to budget and take the bus when possible and cook your own food and shop wisely. As long as someone does that they can live nice and comfortable here. It is definitely cheaper to live here than in USA. The air is good, the ocean is clean and warm, the food is plentiful and fresh, the cost of energy and water is so cheap compared to USA. US products cost about the same here because they have to be shipped here from the USA. Everything that I have heard on U-Tube from expats living here has proved to be true. The Mexican people here in Mazatlan are very friendly and helpful. My body likes hot weather. If you do not like hot weather you probably would not be comfortable here, at least from April through October. Most places and transport have AC so you can still get by well.
Thanks for sharing this very important video. This whole "Mexico is cheap living" narrative has got to stop. The cost of living is less here but I have seen many expats spend like they had unlimited funds. It's sooooo easy to fall into a dangerous budget trap here.

Love your video's, need to catch up on a few, been caught up helping family, you are the only person with a channel about Mexico that talks real about everything, it is like having a friend give you the down low, you dish the tough love, if your sad, unhappy or struggling you will be the same in another country, if you want to be real with what you can afford and move there because you really want to for weather and the culture, then it will be all good.

Was paying 2,000 for 400 square feet back home in Vegas just moved to Michigan and paying 1,200 for a 2 bedroom apt starting over sleeping on the floor so it's hard but I'm surviving lol but I DO WANT TO MOVE TO MERIDA 🥰
We are a happily married couple, retiring early. We only have 16 months out of pocket until Social Security covers everything so as long as the US keeps the social security checks coming, we’ll be fine. We don’t spend much, we are Vegan so eat mostly fruits n veggies, speak Spanish. We think our bills in Chiapas will run about $1500/month…$1800 max. We like living with locals. We avoid expats mostly.

Exactly! Like Jose, I grew up “in the dirt.” I live an upper middle class life now in the US, but I don’t want this anymore. More & more people moving to my area are superficial and materialistic. I CRAVE authenticity and a more affordable lifestyle. I’m Hispanic and fluent in Spanish. Moving to Mexico sounds so appealing.

Hi Jose, I just came back from Merida. I think you should make a video about other topics for tourists too such as renting a car in Cancun airports or Merida also the distances between Merida and Cancun and you should also talk about the Tren Maya and it’s future benefits
In my early 20s I was living in Korea. Early 90s just a few years before that place got wealthy. Older friend introduces me to his niece who is my age and the first thing she does on our date is go into a clothing store, grab a bunch of stuff, take it up the counter, and then tell me to pay for it. I ended the date then and there and my friend ended up apologizing. But yeah - even younger people will be seen as 'sugar daddies / mommies' when you go somewhere with a very different economic situation from where you're from. Even inside of your own country - if you're from somewhere like Silicon Valley or Mexico City and you go out to the Midwest or a smaller town - people will see dollar / peso (or in my case won) signs all over you. But I'd also add that I lived there for 4 years and that only happened to me once. It's not a normal thing, but if you 'show off', you will attract attention. I did have another funny encounter with a wealthy Korean woman who had a pack of poor foreign guys trying to mooch off of her... so it does go both ways (my stepfather's father was a drunken Gringo who married a rich Mexican woman and took her for everything, then abandoned them all when she was dying of cancer back in the 60s).
Jose we are down here in La Paz Baja now on a 180 day visa. Trying living here to see if it works for us. We have been in the country a couple weeks. Everything you are saying is spot on about spending. The problem is figuring it all out, where to eat, shop, buy gas, buy vegetables, buy meat etc. So this is the problem and alot is due to the language barrier so we end up going to the Americanized establishments. We are quickly finding out we can't spend 900 - 1200 pesos on a dinner each night. Food in the big supermarkets as well as the restaurants can be just as expensive as back home we are from Canada so our dollar doesn't stretch as much as someone from the US but it doesn't matter where you're from if you keep spending spending spending I can see easily how people are going broke or thinking why did I come here there's no savings. I see posts all the time people say I want to come to Mexico and live like a local. It's easy to say this but to submerge yourself into being like a local is the biggest obstacle. Not being able to speak the language is by far the biggest obstacle for us. But we are learning each day and trying to get better and I think that's the big thing is you have to work on it and work on it hopefully we'll get there. It's also hard to trust the local Taco Stand when it's in somebody's garage or just out on the street and the same as the stores it's just somebody's house front this is where you need to know locals to tell you it's okay.
Thank you for sharing your very real experience with the rest of us. Trust me even with knowing the language it still took me awhile to get integrated. At the end living out here on a modest budget can be done, but it will take some work and effort to get it and maintain it. Thanks again for sharing!

He better have some pesos😂 in his bank account The best way to NOT GO BROKE anywhere is to adopt a budget & stick to it!!!! It's that simple folks. Live within your means. I'll give you an example.....I budgeted $200 per month for Didi, Uber, Indriver, etc. But once on the ground I realized taking public buses & lots of walking is very doable for us so I adjusted my budget. I really enjoy eating out here vs cooking at home 99% of the time in the 🇺🇲. So I adjusted my Budget to allow for more $eating out$. You're right Inflation has been a 💩 in 🇲🇽 & the 🇺🇲. So we must adjust our budgets/spending

A lot of women have somewhat expensive tastes. A lot of women like to have nice gifts, to go out for dinner at nice restraunts, wear nice clothes, go on vacations. But that is just pretty normal. Everybody wants to enjoy life, right? But there's a big difference between that and litterly taking advantage of somebody. Men also need to stand up for themselves more and take control of their own finances, and realize when their girlfriend is a gold digger.
Very true! It is the same all over the world. At the end of the day its a much deeper conversation than we can have here but at least here you get more bang for your buck, pun intended lol

I can contest to this. Been here two weeks tomorrow & just told my wife daily groceries are reflective of Aldi’s in the states somewhat. Family of five. So yes, you can go stupid broke here if you just throw out pesos. Do it for one week then get back to reality.
Exactly! Very well said! In the end the low cost of living comes from living Frugally as well. I know that my lifestyle in the USA would cost about 3x as much. That's why I choose to live here. But that is my own personal experience. Most people want to live a more expensive life than they lived back home only to quickly realize it is going to be just as expensive..... only in pesos lol

It’s actually easier than one may think for a expat to get a job in Merida. There are Canadian and American companies that have call centers in Merida. You don’t need to know Spanish but you must have a work permit to work in Mexico. The pay isn’t great, between 550-600 per month working forty hours per week but it’s better than going broke and having to leave. Hope this helps
I will be living on my own land in my own home and in a small town in veracruz. I am building from the US and trying learn to live on basic budget here before we go. But if I ask my family what they spend a month they can't answer. With no rent and living a quiet life what is a idea of a monthly budget?

Each country has a completely different currency. Peso is Spanish for dollar. Most Spanish countries call their currency the peso but they are all very different. For more information on current exchange rates pease check with Google

I purchased in the country via a direct purchase. Property was not listed on websites. Direct purchase seems to me to be the way to best save money on property purchases. You may have to drive around the area to find them since they are not listed. I found my property through word of mouth.

Building wealth is not (from) what you make, its (from) what you spend. Also, your health is your wealth. I like to think of eating like “spending” and exercising is like “saving”. I save more than I spend so I can enjoy having sweets without getting overweight. It’s a mental trick I used for years and thought I’d share it.

My husband and I have been living in Mexico for almost a year.We live a middle class Mexican neighborhood and we love it( I practice my spanish)!We barely take our car out because we just walk to get our groceries.We might go to Walmart to buy ramen and other things international(twice a month).

Thanks Jose. I have moved to Mazatlan two weeks ago from south Florida. The information you provide helped prepare me well. Everything you are saying is true. Love it here, do have to budget and take the bus when possible and cook your own food and shop wisely. As long as someone does that they can live nice and comfortable here. It is definitely cheaper to live here than in USA. The air is good, the ocean is clean and warm, the food is plentiful and fresh, the cost of energy and water is so cheap compared to USA. US products cost about the same here because they have to be shipped here from the USA. Everything that I have heard on U-Tube from expats living here has proved to be true. The Mexican people here in Mazatlan are very friendly and helpful. My body likes hot weather. If you do not like hot weather you probably would not be comfortable here, at least from April through October. Most places and transport have AC so you can still get by well.

Was paying 2,000 for 400 square feet back home in Vegas just moved to Michigan and paying 1,200 for a 2 bedroom apt starting over sleeping on the floor so it's hard but I'm surviving lol but I DO WANT TO MOVE TO MERIDA 🥰

We are a happily married couple, retiring early. We only have 16 months out of pocket until Social Security covers everything so as long as the US keeps the social security checks coming, we’ll be fine. We don’t spend much, we are Vegan so eat mostly fruits n veggies, speak Spanish. We think our bills in Chiapas will run about $1500/month…$1800 max. We like living with locals. We avoid expats mostly.

In my early 20s I was living in Korea. Early 90s just a few years before that place got wealthy. Older friend introduces me to his niece who is my age and the first thing she does on our date is go into a clothing store, grab a bunch of stuff, take it up the counter, and then tell me to pay for it. I ended the date then and there and my friend ended up apologizing. But yeah - even younger people will be seen as 'sugar daddies / mommies' when you go somewhere with a very different economic situation from where you're from. Even inside of your own country - if you're from somewhere like Silicon Valley or Mexico City and you go out to the Midwest or a smaller town - people will see dollar / peso (or in my case won) signs all over you. But I'd also add that I lived there for 4 years and that only happened to me once. It's not a normal thing, but if you 'show off', you will attract attention. I did have another funny encounter with a wealthy Korean woman who had a pack of poor foreign guys trying to mooch off of her... so it does go both ways (my stepfather's father was a drunken Gringo who married a rich Mexican woman and took her for everything, then abandoned them all when she was dying of cancer back in the 60s).

Jose we are down here in La Paz Baja now on a 180 day visa. Trying living here to see if it works for us. We have been in the country a couple weeks. Everything you are saying is spot on about spending.
The problem is figuring it all out, where to eat, shop, buy gas, buy vegetables, buy meat etc.
So this is the problem and alot is due to the language barrier so we end up going to the Americanized establishments. We are quickly finding out we can't spend 900 - 1200 pesos on a dinner each night. Food in the big supermarkets as well as the restaurants can be just as expensive as back home we are from Canada so our dollar doesn't stretch as much as someone from the US but it doesn't matter where you're from if you keep spending spending spending I can see easily how people are going broke or thinking why did I come here there's no savings.
I see posts all the time people say I want to come to Mexico and live like a local. It's easy to say this but to submerge yourself into being like a local is the biggest obstacle. Not being able to speak the language is by far the biggest obstacle for us. But we are learning each day and trying to get better and I think that's the big thing is you have to work on it and work on it hopefully we'll get there.
It's also hard to trust the local Taco Stand when it's in somebody's garage or just out on the street and the same as the stores it's just somebody's house front this is where you need to know locals to tell you it's okay.
Thank you for sharing your very real experience with the rest of us. Trust me even with knowing the language it still took me awhile to get integrated. At the end living out here on a modest budget can be done, but it will take some work and effort to get it and maintain it. Thanks again for sharing!

He better have some pesos😂 in his bank account The best way to NOT GO BROKE anywhere is to adopt a budget & stick to it!!!! It's that simple folks. Live within your means. I'll give you an example.....I budgeted $200 per month for Didi, Uber, Indriver, etc. But once on the ground I realized taking public buses & lots of walking is very doable for us so I adjusted my budget. I really enjoy eating out here vs cooking at home 99% of the time in the 🇺🇲. So I adjusted my Budget to allow for more $eating out$. You're right Inflation has been a 💩 in 🇲🇽 & the 🇺🇲. So we must adjust our budgets/spending

A lot of women have somewhat expensive tastes. A lot of women like to have nice gifts, to go out for dinner at nice restraunts, wear nice clothes, go on vacations. But that is just pretty normal. Everybody wants to enjoy life, right? But there's a big difference between that and litterly taking advantage of somebody. Men also need to stand up for themselves more and take control of their own finances, and realize when their girlfriend is a gold digger.
Very true! It is the same all over the world. At the end of the day its a much deeper conversation than we can have here but at least here you get more bang for your buck, pun intended lol

Exactly! Very well said! In the end the low cost of living comes from living Frugally as well. I know that my lifestyle in the USA would cost about 3x as much. That's why I choose to live here. But that is my own personal experience. Most people want to live a more expensive life than they lived back home only to quickly realize it is going to be just as expensive..... only in pesos lol

It’s actually easier than one may think for a expat to get a job in Merida. There are Canadian and American companies that have call centers in Merida. You don’t need to know Spanish but you must have a work permit to work in Mexico. The pay isn’t great, between 550-600 per month working forty hours per week but it’s better than going broke and having to leave. Hope this helps

Each country has a completely different currency. Peso is Spanish for dollar. Most Spanish countries call their currency the peso but they are all very different. For more information on current exchange rates pease check with Google

I purchased in the country via a direct purchase. Property was not listed on websites. Direct purchase seems to me to be the way to best save money on property purchases. You may have to drive around the area to find them since they are not listed. I found my property through word of mouth.
