    Altered Carbon is my favorite Netflix series, right next to Daredevil. It’s a beautiful crafted cyberpunk, sci fi series and I highly recommend you check it out if you haven’t already

    Poe has been my favorite character from the show, I thought it was amazing, I also love how Altered Carbon showed that love is utmost regardless of what sleeve was used

  • @BrokenEyes00
    @BrokenEyes00 6 років тому +67

    This seriously reminded me of elements from First Wave, Eve Online and BSG.
    Given the costs of a organ transplant a years salary for a new body/resurrection actually sounds incredibly reasonable, especially when one considers a “sleeve” is an entire body and not a single organ, so even if you take inflation into account still a reasonable price.
    (Note: just a transplant patient putting his two cents in on the story content, always enjoy these videos Film Comics!)

    • @IndividualGhost
      @IndividualGhost 6 років тому

      I watched the show also, but i was under the impression it could take a lifetime to buy a new sleeve, better the sleeve the more it will cost ya. I'f any of them could be bought for 1 years salary it would prolly be like that little girl at the start who got the old ladys sleeve.

    • @BrokenEyes00
      @BrokenEyes00 6 років тому +3

      IndividualGhost that’s kinda how it works with Transplant organs, I don’t know who my organ came from, I don’t know what race, gender, age (although this one is a little bit more tightly controlled as I understand it, and that’s for practical purposes, you can’t put a 30-year-old kidney into a seven-year-old receiver and vice versa), etc (although that information is kept somewhere, but neither I nor the donors family can access it), the deciding factors is does the donor match the recipient tissue wise ang how close is the match (this is why extremely close family members are able to selflessly donate an organ like a kidney or part of the liver and the receiver may not need to go on immunosuppressants).
      I have to admit, considering that we have these safeguards now, I’m a little Irked that they’re thrown out for sake of the story but that’s due to my perspective.
      Given the rather large list of mental issues that occur from improper sleeving, I’m a bit surprised that there aren’t actually safeguards to assure at least proper gender and age. Given how common place this is supposed to be as part of the human condition, you would think that these basic requirements would be met, especially considering there doesn’t seem to be a expiration date that has to be met in terms of moving from one sleeve to the next, the idea that you get whatever is in storage falls apart (at the very least, you have time to wait until the proper age, gender and ethnicity becomes available).
      I think ghost in the shell probably hit it more accurately in terms of what the attitude would be, that you would have those and the full spectrum ranging from those who just had their brain cyberized, those Who went full body prosthetic, those who insisted that the external appearance matched their original body and those who didn’t give a shit (texan in a box).

    • @IndividualGhost
      @IndividualGhost 6 років тому

      I agree, Ghost in the shell hit the nail on the head. this although being a fun story and show. it overlooked alot of things and just plain ignored alot of others.

    I really like this series, i think it's a really interesting take on human life and technology.
    But there are also many themes portrayed in it. Like how loyalty works, I mean Kovacs had to choose and his people around him too, like the robot that runs the hotel. He was so extremely loyal despite multiple times that we think he will betray Kovacs.

    • @BenHopkins1000
      @BenHopkins1000 6 років тому +5

      Poe's not a robot. He's an AI.

    • @chinaman1
      @chinaman1 6 років тому +3

      Ah yes, an AI, apologies. But yes, Poe is an amazing character. I think he's more interesting than that black guy whose daughter is mentally broken.

      In the books, Poe's Shot gun is a very illegal and rare laser shot gun.
      The tv series did not get into the details of the 3 kinds of guns.
      Charged guns, basically regular guns with mini computers, energy power supply to shoot bullets in a vacuum, and the ability to only shoot when the real owner pulls the trigger.
      Magnetic/ rail guns, a lot more expensive guns that can reuse amno or use most materials in the world as amno.
      Laser guns, which everyone has until people started to get Stacks. The only type of gun that can destroy the body and stacks at the same time. In the books Poe's shot gun is one of the 5 laser guns left. Kovacs get the gun at the end of the first book. The biggest issue with the gun is that it has unlimited amno, ironically doesn't overheat, passes through most material detecters, has no user interface, is extremely hard to destroy, and believed to be destroyed.
      If there is a season 2 in the future, that shot gun needs to be there because it has many different importances in the 5 books.

    This is one of the few Book adaptations that turned out absolutely amazing!!! I just finished the book and while there were big changes in the Tv series. it can stand on its own and deserves a viewing!
    I personally LOVED the virtual torture scene in episode 4 with Joel Kinnaman and Tahmoh Penikett. both played their roles beautifully. Joel Kinnaman delivery of his line "Someone you Truly, Should not have FUCKED WITH." And then walking the two techs through, how colossally they had Fucked up allowing him to be tortured in this way. Was absolutely EPIC, proceeding the torture clinic massacre!

    I love the novel, it's a fresh idea on how to tackle the topic of immortality and its consequences. Really excited about the show, I saw it with my wife and it was great but the only problem we had with the show is that Officer Kristin Ortega, for some reason my wife and I are not really fond of her in every scene she is (minus the nude scene in my part 😉). It feels so over the top performance.

    Altered Carbon has that very Shadowrun Returns feel to you, that cyberpunk feeling, it also has a smiliar premise. Friend got fragged and he wants to know who and why, and he sends you a black box of sorts to feel you in on his last will. The asethic of the location is brilliantly well thought out. Has a hella good plot too. Can't wait for more. Great video.

That said we loose consciousness every time we go into a deep sleep. Or are under anesthetics or in a coma. We are just machines. How do you know you are the same person that went to sleep the night before?

      at Brian I - ah i get you, i finally understand this comment after looking at it for so many months since 2019, you said " pedantic tendencies" iv translated it its latin, Pedantic (clinical English) ,
      in my dialect we say "Peda-ic " (latin )/ " Child-like tendencies" (common English)" you book readers must really be on hairs about the changes. me i cant live with out the hero saying "get your ass to (planet) Mars" but in the book the colony was Australia and connected to the mother country through a tunnel system dug out.. but in the cinematic version they get there on a shuttel to mars took a few months to get there and you stay in your seat the whole way only getting up to go to the bath room. and sleep , and take the window seat or the isle seat. Qaud took the WINDOW SEAT ON ALL THE LINES EVEN THE RAIL ROAD ON MARS. but you book readers are on the other side you cant picture quad having to go to mars and instead not reach australia in a futureistic tunnel that Elon Musk helped build with his go fund me or what ever. but me i see elon musk making the space hotels and the space airplanes to get quads ass to mars as his other self hauser told him to do. so you book readers must be in stich's over the changes in a bad way though. me i cant live with out going to the colony at mars instead of the colony of Australia. ever since australia ratified the westminster agreement of 1931 in 1949 Australia has been a separte independent country. it might be refered to as the former colony, but i cant picture it in my head as the futre colony like Burn cycle game for the cdi or PC or trinity universe or book version of Total recall say it is. if the war on terrorism or a civil war happens in america or even another ice age, i do see a rise in immigration from Western Europe and North America to Australia. id see new communities forming in the Outback and the eventual fight for the aborigines to get the immigrants to leave, which was the war. in the game either trinity or burn cycle the aborigines tried to destroy the internet in 2063, but in the game trinity the PRC chinese destroyed the internet in 2061. so i thought this was similer to Nostradamus 2.63 where the comet will return / run which is 2061, last time it came it was 1986 i was 5 going on 6. i just cant picture australia being the colony it has to be Mars. like in the first total recall movie not the book versin which is the second movie.

    Great video again, I wasn't sure if I was going to watch this but now I will after seeing this. Could you look at V for Vendetta? One of my favourite films and I think it's got a great back story, could be an interesting video

    My issue with downloading consciousness, is that its always a replica and not an transfer. The initial person is not granted immortality, his clone is.

      I hope Netflix goes on to do a sequel going along with the second book as well, though the actor that played Kovacs left the show and he was one of the high points for me throughout the run of the show.
