I thought Season 1 was great having never heard of Altered Carbon before watching it. Season 2 was a bit of a downgrade, at no fault of Makie (He did fine with what he had to work with). I just thought the things that made Season 1 great were side lined (world building, a good plot, and a good supporting cast).
@@CoL_Drake I still haven't read the first book lol, I should do that. Also I'm sure you'd know better then I do, but apparently S2 was a mix of books 2, and 3.
The sleeves are socialized in the first episode. If something happens to your Sleeve, the government gives you a new one. Remember the child in the addict's sleeve.
I don’t think you have to side with falconers philosophy you only have to recognise that she’s altruistic, beautiful and ultimately doomed and her love and indomitable spirit inspires and equips kovacs. The possibility of following the Elder represents the ultimate potential for salvation
So, bodies were seen as expendable, but only by the ultra-rich. The commoners in AC do not have the luxury of switching bodies, they live in them until they die from old age/disease, and then maybe they're "re-sleeved" once or twice. The idea of staying eternally young is amazing, but if you're forced to "get old" with each body, then there's no fun in that. That's some shit life, and I'd rather just die once. Another thing that wasn't made obvious in the show is that unless you're re-sleeved in a clone of your own body that looks and feels the same, you will start to fragment. After a while, no matter what you do you will go insane (unless you're an Envoy), which is again the reason why the ultra-rich always re-sleeved in their own clones.
First Season was good but there was a major flaw, their backup system, it takes only few seconds but they only do it in 48h gap. Why not doing it every hour it takes only few seconds.
this show tiptoed around class like it was nobodies business. But hey, it was cool to see a large space fairing society that cyberpunk levels of tech. Which are always conveniently missing in space opera.
Joel Kinnaman got his gig with a multi-layered performance in AMC's remake of the Danish(?) show The Killing opposite Mirielle Enos. They had great chemistry together. Robocop was just a bad idea from the very beginning. I don't attach any blame to Kinnaman for that dumpster fire.
I don't know why, but your saying the universe has a lot of room to be "fleshed" out immediately after mentioning the body-swapping aspect of the series made me chuckle. It probably wasn't meant to be a moment of levity, but it unintentionally was, at least for me. Do you think with all of the new Star Trek series being produced by Paramount/CBS that the franchise will become over-saturated? Too much of an intellectual property can delute the quality.
I wish they played up the religious angle since humans in this Universe basically have the power of God. I think the argument that we are god we can do what we want vs no we were only meant to here for a period of time because God said so would make that sub plot more interesting.
I watched series 1 a while ago and liked it, I forgot series 2 was on the way until it arrived. After I watch series 1 again to remind myself what happened I will binge watch series 2 over a weekend :-)
They could've helped us to side more with Quell if they just showed more of the de fragment and how it effects the meths and everyone else that have gone from sleeve to sleeve.
the characters are all completely flat , the world is just patched together without any deep thought, how can anybody watch this without cringing all the way through ???
The Internet has a dark side... where star trek rumours are concerned... iv stop caring and instead I use my own mind. Star trek will always be my favourite franchise.. through thick and thin... Star trek is so diverse that I never find it boring each series does something new in every series and every film. I love it.
The series owes much more to William Gibson's often surreal ideas about computers and virtual reality than Philip K. Dick, Ridley Scott and Blade Runner, even though the visual language is obviously highly influenced by the latter.
I LOVED the rant at the end, scratched an itch I didnt know I had. Also saying everything they dont like is part of the JJ Verse is so annoying and its not something that they can have an opinion on, its codified in contact clauses and the 15% different stipulation.
That said, mindlessly ranting about criticism concerning certain franchises is as bad as mindless ranting about said franchise. IMO, several of our venerable franchises are currently in the hands of people who don't get them, don't appreciate them and see them as venues for ranting about current year issues and politics, in a polemic, ranting manner, rather than thoughtful, as previously done in said franchises, if they addressed them at all. Hence, the bifurcation of the fanbase and sinking profit prospectives. The JJVerse thing didn't have the problem of political propagandizing, it just took a franchise known for deep world building, intelligent characterization and a decades long heritage, and tried to turn it into Star Wars. Calling something JJVerse is shorthand for franchises being abused. Yes, the corporate owners of the franchises have the right to do with their properties as they wish. And, conversely, the fans are free to say what they wish, as well as support or walk away as they see fit. Personally, for me, If you love X franchise and you see it being horribly being abused, you do your beloved franchise no favors by continuing to give said corporation what they really want, your money.
Their problem was that they changed the story and writing in the books around FOR NO REASON. These changes didn't improve the story, didn't save costs. They just stroked the ego of writers who felt that they could write better than the original author, and fucked up the story and worldbuilding.
What do you think of the Dreampunk genre which shows the surreal aspects of reality. A good example that I've been told is the upcoming Dispatches From Elsewhere show.
Watched the first two episodes then didn't continue for some reason. Gotta continue it again now that season 2 is here! And thank you for your little Star Trek rant, I get so tired of those certain UA-cam channels spreading their bs and fans taking it all at face value. In the words of Worf: "You must think me a fool to make your lies so transparent!"
I thought the books were a pretty bad mix of sub-par Raymond Chandler mixed with Alastair Reynolds (who is just sub-par). No surprise it resulted in a sub-par end result.
speaking of Star trek the original series, I don't know if you've seen it but IDW put out a comic book line called Star trek year 5. If you haven't checked it out I would recommend you do
Kinneman was also good in The Killing and is great in For All Mankind. He's low-key become one of my favorite TV actors, I just think he got stuck in badly-directed movies. Altered Carbon S1 was a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I recognize that a lot of it is derivative and I didn't love the overall plot or especially the ending, but it was just so quintessentially cyberpunk in a way that tickles me.
The best part was Joel kinnamin and the world-building/ideas. The writing was really poor for me and cringey alot of the time. I was really disappointed when he finally met his sister. Naturally if everyone lived forever there would be no need or indeed room for children, so the invention of stack-technology is a real problem. I think that the series looses focus on this a little in season 2.
