I know you're gonna work on it in the later stages, but did you think about how you would make the analog triggers work? It would be so cool if you could use hall effect sensors, and read the voltage changes in them to create an analog signal....😀
Yeah I used hall sensors on the last one and it worked well. In my opinion, it's actually one of the easiest ways to make triggers so I don't know why anyone would do it any other way anymore yet companies still do!
I hope this project pushes hardware manufacturers to make something like this. A handheld PC you can upgrade like a desktop seems like the next step of PC evolution to me.
I hope so too! I'd love to see some SBC's that are designed specifically for this. Thin profile boards with lower voltage power inputs and intenal display/usb headers would be a good start!
I feel like the easiest way to do this would definitely be to build a console with a mini pc setup in it that then had a replaceable cpu, then just be able to swap out the cpu for upgrades since that would also naturally come with integrated graphics which in AMD’s case isn’t too bad. (Especially for a handheld console)

What would be awesome to also see is maybe some implementation of the framework laptops modules (which are open source and you can modify them the way you like), or maybe some port which lets you connect a powerbank just on the back of the machine, to also slot into, would be sick! Well it will support USB-C PD charging so you could get a big power bank and connect that for longer runtime! I don't have framework stuff so I'm not even sure what options there are for modules! If there's anything useful that isn't already included on the mini PC I'll look into it
@@cncdan The framework laptop modules, are open source and all the architecture is there, it literally just uses type c ports but are modules which can include anything from more storage to displayports in that module, and the community already designs some of that stuff so its ready to go and be made/bought on their marketplace

I'd love to, but they are very expensive in Australia. This one I felt was a good compromise between cost and performance that fit within my budget. I'll look into upgrading it if the project does well enough!
Not without a complete re-design. I'm happy enough with the on screen keyboard. I don't often find I need to type on these devices anyway. Just the occasional username/password or character name is easy enough to do on the touchscreen!
Adaptability is great. I'm currently thinking about AMD's forthcoming Halo Strix, which will likely be too high wattage for most handhelds, but might end end up in NUC-sized PCs. I'm usually near power of some sort (like in a car) when I'm using a handheld, so it doesn't need to run for hours and hours at the higher total system power, though I'd like more than just a 'UPS' anyway. I've found that I'm a bit of a stickler for 60 FPS, which looking at the Steam Deck most played games I seem to be in the minority given most of the them for both people playing and most times played are what I'd consider 'unplayable' FPS-wise on it, so I'm looking for something with a lot more oomph than current handhelds can manage.
Strix Halo is reportedly targeting 140W TDP, which knowing AMD means about 160-180W at full tilt. It's like an entire PS5 APU in size and power. Any Mini PC this ends up in could end up being Series S sized, as the chip is meant to be the CPU and the GPU for a gaming laptop. The Kracken series of APUs might be a better fit. Still Zen5 and RDNA4, but targeting more normal TDPs like 28-50W.
Yeah, you may need a different power solution if you're planning to use a system with significantly higher maximum tdp than this one. I think there are a few other IC's from the same product line that can handle a bit more power. Either that or if you're happy with a slightly janky solution just run straight from the battery and use a switch to change over to wall power!
I have finished mine at 70%. Since i have not a 3D printer I use a PVC box, it's easier but it's bigger... really bigger. I use a dc jack to charge it through a BMS 3S3P with new battery cells of 4000mAh liitokala 18650 lliking 4000 And step up boost 12v to 19v there is a rgb switch, 2 fans 5v 0.1A each of 30mmx30mm, a little screen for the battery and another one with volt+ampere. 2 nintendo oled speakers and 2 nintendo rails to attach 2 NYxi joycon. And i will soon paint it in black, i have to finished beforethe holes for power button, usb2 and usb type C and the holes for the 2 fans. And since i have a lot of space inside the box i have decided to put later on a SSD You do it like a pro, mine it's more raw but really enjoyable.
As long as you're having fun, that's all that matters! I'm a bit sceptical of the 4000mah 18650's, as the highest capacity I've been able to find in a reputable brand is 3600mah. I have had good success in the past with the littokala cells though so I might have to pick a couple up and do my own capacity tests!
@@cncdan I have checked them it weight 48g and are ~4100 to 4200mah So even higher than 4000. There are some videos in youtube that have checked them also from 3900 to 4200. I don't know if they will last in time

Im interested in making my own PC but may try making this and tinkering with higher capacity batteries, and more batteries, ( its fine if it comes out a tad fat, bigger consoles are more comfortable for me as long as they are not too thick and heavy)
This will already be pretty heavy with the amount of batteries I'm adding, but if you want to add more go for it! Yes I will make sure I let everyone know if I end up selling the PCBs for it!
@@cncdan if my choice of mini pc has low enough consumption then 4 9900 mAh batteries from anazon will work, they are AA but i can make it internal only and rechargeable, the batteries themselves already are
If they are AA sized and claim to be 9900mah, I can assure you they are fake. That sort of capacity isn't possible even in much larger lithium cells, let alone AA size. With batteries like that, at best you'll get a re-skinned cheap lower capacity cell. At worst you'll get a tiny battery inside a tube full of sand to make it feel heavier and a potential fire hazard. I'm currently looking at the option of using 21700 size lithium cells, which would allow me to cram about 90wh of battery in there for a runtime of 2-6 hours depending on load. The downside to this is they will be about 100g heavier than the smaller battery and require a small bump in the lower rear section of the housing.

If you doubled up the battery you'd be adding another 320 or so grams of weight bringing the total weight to over 3x the weight of your switch, just FYI. If all you ever plan to do with it is sit on the couch and play, I'm sure it would be comfortable enough but then I'd just have mine plugged in if I never planned on taking it anywhere.
I'm considering that option. It is going to make it heavier, but with current capacity limits it would allow you to double the capacity of the NucDeck battery, meaning you'd get about 2 hours of use un-capped and possibly up to about 6 hours of light use.

Could you have used a standard HDMI cable with a 90° bend instead of relaying via FFC?
Sadly not, there is very little room in there which is why I needed to design the custom adaptor.
