Nearly 20 years ago Pitchfork reviewed this LP and wrote - “How can an album as tight, consistent, and energetic as Highly Refined Pirates be at once so thoroughly unimpressive?”
I couldn’t disagree more.
To me this album was a coming out party-shaking off the heavy-music influenced roots of Botch and embracing new loves of beats, dance, pop and electronic production in tandem with technical playing.
The next 15 years were a whirlwind of fun and creativity - I couldn’t be more proud to have kicked it off with this one. 😀
