    Lyrics:
Open up your murder eyes and see the ugly world that spat you out.
Open up your ugly mouth and sing the words it taught you, spit them out.
In the days before the damage no one knew if we were happy,
in the days before the damage dying wasn’t nearly easy now
so open up your murder eyes and see the ugly world that spat you out.
    Stevie Wonder to the bullshit
Stevie Wonder to the bullshit, baby,
write a nice pop song about it.
Cut the world in half, I bet that you will go and find a sleeping giant.
Turn the page just to wake him up and then turn the page and then turn the page to kill him.
In the days before the damage boredom was the same as waiting,
in the days before the damage water was the only raining,
in the days before the damage human beings were the ones that did the chasing.
Open up your murder eyes, see the ugly world that spat you out.
    Helen Keller to the bullshit
Helen Keller to the bullshit, break through your isolation.
    Temple Grandin to the bullshit
Temple Grandin to the bullshit, baby,
find a nicer way to kill it
find a nicer way to kill it
find a nicer way to kill it
find a nicer way to kill it
find a nicer way to kill it
find a nicer way to kill it
find a nicer way to kill it
find a nicer way to kill it

I never looked at the lyrics, but always heard "Temple Grandin do the bullshit" not "Temple Grandin to the bullshit". Looking that up, and understanding that phrase puts the song in a whole new light for me. Before, I thought it was ~"doing these things (writing songs, breaking isolation, and being humane) is bullshit". Now I understand it as "do these things in spite of the bullshit". Jeez, I love these guys.

***** I respect Fantano a lot and usually my opinion is within reason of his but i think he got it way off when it came to Christmas Island. Incredible album. it's different from previous albums, sure, but lyrically it's fantastic and the production is great. Fantanos opinion isn't fact, personally im in love with Christmas Island and nothing the busiest internet nerd can say will change that

I heard this song when I was finishing an Ethnic American Lit class, particularly I had just finished the novel Truth and Bright Water, literally just finished reading it in my car as I arrived on campus. It left a melancholy feeling so I put on this pop song I thought would help, which I was little acquainted with at the time because it was just released. Well, fuck me running, this song made that novel come to life in the deepest part of my chest and I bawled like a child. It was one of the most justified cries I’ve ever had, if that makes sense. The novel was a coming of age story about a Native American boy who never had a chance. And his best friend who was just as Poor living on the reservation, but he had a mom who’d keep fresh flowers in the kitchen as long as she could, trimming away the decay as needed, bit by bit until it was only stalks and leaves. Such was the preservation of their people. Too many died still as freshly budded petals. The landscape, the Buffalo, the young men, were all replaced with fake flowers and bullshit heritage month carnivals. It’s overwhelming how mankind must eat and eat and eat. How there will always be a just barely-beginning-to-bud little flower of a child that we’ll show a nightmare to, so scary that he never blossoms and eventually self-destructs.

I don't know about you guys, but to me the song sounds like it's saying don't let your disabilities hold you back, "Open up your murder eyes, and see the ugly world that spat you out." is saying you need to realize that yeah, you may not be the "average" human being and you are probably getting shit on for that. Sean references Stevie Wonder, Hellen Keller, and of course Temple Grandin, because they not only "opened up their murder eyes, and saw the ugly world that spat them out" (understanding that they aren't the same as others), but that they also "found a nicer way to kill it" (meaning that rather than just learning to live with their disability, they found a way to thrive, this especially shows in the Hellen Keller line with the "Break through your isolation" because due to her disability he was completely isolated from everyone, but she "found a nicer way to kill it", she learned to sign into the palms into others hands and she broke through her isolation). I'm just going to leave it at this for now since it's super late, but I might add more later.

Finding a “nicer way to kill it” is Temple Grandin! This is what she’s known for. She came up with humane ways to slaughter animals for food, partially because she is pretty severely autistic. She “overcame” that as s setback.
Spot on analysis though! You got me to realize what the song was about more.

I think he's talking about 9/11 when he sings, "In the days before the damage".
Does anyone notice how everyone was greeting each other from the fist bump, to a hand shake and then with a hug? I think they're trying to say we should all learn to be more affectionate toward people in our hearts.

"I think he's talking about 9/11 when he sings, "In the days before the damage" "
-I think it means the time before humanism and independence for example
"In the days before the damage boredom was the same as waiting"
aka before and during Renaissance time people had way less stimulation then we do now
"In the days before the damage water was the only raining"

Does the whole "Stevie Wonder/ Hellen Keller/ Temple Grandin to the bullshit" thing have to do with rappers like Lil Wayne saying things like that with frequency. Also, the whole Temple Grandin line is viscerally effective. Damn. Reminds me of the Lemongeads a

Blind/Deaf/Dumb to the bullshit. Temple Grandin (maybe you already know) designs "nicer" slaughterhouses. This song and "Temple Grandin Too" on this album both partially deal with the absurdity of that idea, it seems.

The album is amazing everyone. You will not be let down. Oh, and this is the song meaning - I think.
    Open up your murder eyes
And see the ugly world that spat you out
(Open your corrupted eyes to the world that you were not excepted into)
    Open up your ugly mouth
And sing the words as I
    Spit 'em out
(Open up your corrupted / obsessive mouth and sing along to their songs)
In the days before the damage
No one knew if they were happy
In the days before the damage
    Dying wasn't nearly easy now
(In the days before the breakthrough and popularity of the band, no one knew they had enough to be happy - and they could also do what they want, even die - but now so many fans depend on them - giving them alot more of a job like responsibility)
So open up your murder eyes
And see the ugly world that spat you out
(So open up your eyes and realize you had it better then, even though you had it rough - now he is an adult and hates the responsibilities)
    Stevie Wonder did the bullshit
Stevie Wonder did the bullshit, baby
Write a nice pop song about it
(Stevie wonder was a popular and happy artist - he is jealous)
Cut the world in half I bet that
You will go and find a sleeping giant
Turn the page just to wake him up
    And then turn the page
    And then turn the page
    To kill him
(No one knew inside of him their was a giant band and fandom on the horizon, so cut him in half to wake up the emotions put in the band. Turn the page to success and turn the page to regret)
In the days before the damage
Boredom was the same as waiting
In the days before the damage
    Water was the only raining
In the days before the damage
    Human beings were the ones
    That did the chasing
(In the days before their popularity they had to wait for success - though it was boring. Before popularity it only rained water, now it rains responsibilities and money and all the consumer bullshit. Before popularity the band hand to chase down gigs and opportunities, now its fans chasing them)
    Open up your murder eyes
And see the ugly world that spat you out
(So open up your eyes and realize you had it better then, even though you had it rough - now he is an adult and hates the responsibilities)
    Helen Keller did the bullshit
    Helen Keller did the bullshit
    Break through your isolation
(Hellenic Keller another emblem that made a change - he was jealous. But finally one day he broke through the small opportunities and made it big.)
    Temple Grandin did the bullshit
Temple Grandin did the bullshit, baby
    (Another emblem)
Find a nicer way to kill it
(Find a better way to grow up, instead of suffering through it)

Sorry dude, I'm going to have to disagree with just about everything you're saying here. The song is about overcoming a handicap, blindness, isolation, autism. Sublimate your handicap into something incredible. Become a pop icon, learn to socialize against all odds, become a published and well respected scholar regardless of autism. Find a nicer way to kill it, as in, find a positive way to deal with your problems. The damage, as far as I can ascertain, is probably an allusion to hunter-gatherer times. Water was the only raining, as in no acid-rain, people did the chasing, as in hunting. Boredom was the same as waiting, there weren't a million entertainment options waiting around every corner. The thing with the sleeping giant imo is just about how imagination and reading works. You're reading a story about a giant, you turn the page and the giant wakes up in the story, you turn the pages until the hero kills the giant. Not trying to shit on you, but I think you're focusing way too much on the band as the speaker.

    • @minivanmegafun

almussalix " Find a nicer way to kill it, as in, find a positive way to deal with your problems." Yes, but that line is also literal. Temple Grandin is most well known for her work on creating a more humane way of slaughtering livestock.
