I feel like that's the pure Spirit of this series. The most interesting episodes are like this, and then when I listen to whomever is featured, I try to parse out the different influences, to see if I can hear em, and often, I can! It's fun for me, and also really drives home the point of all music being connected in one way or another, just like us as people!
AZ indie punk legends! Mark’s dad always used to swing by the local Zia Records I worked at whenever he could and talk shop about these guys and how proud he was of his son 🙏🏽 cool fellas and some rad picks, thanks guys!!
That juxtaposition of Texas Chainsaw tshirt and the last two Talk Talk releases is delightful. Mark Hollis might have been tickled by it. RIP Mark. P.S. Play After The Flood on a rainy day and you'll feel harmony around.
As a run of three consecutive albums, The Colour of Spring, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock must be one of the best in the history of rock and pop music. Still as fresh today as it was all those years ago.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's music and singing was incredible. He wasn't just 'holy' music though, he did Bollywood girl-meets-stuff as well as collaborating with Peter Gabriel, Eddie Vedder and was even remixed by Massive Attack. Incredible artist. And a good What's in my Bag!
I'm a DJ at my college's radio station. Branko Mataja has become a sort of folk hero among a certain contingent of us. So glad seeing him get more attention.
That Branko Mataja record is insane. His story is as beautiful as it is heartbreaking. I consider myself to have a profound Love for Music, and Guitar especially, but, to build your own, having never done it before, while imprisoned under unfathomably inhumane conditions is just astonishing. He created a unique and singular work of Art. It sounds like the whole album was recorded with a ring modulator, and feels like you're waltzing at the bottom of the ocean. I've never heard of these guys, but their varied tastes resonates a great deal with my own, and they articulate their experiences of the music in a detailed and relatable way. I'll be checking them out.
Never thought I'd live to see the day someone talked about the Shahenshah, Nusrat fateh ali khan on WIMB! Still the unsurpassed king of Qawaali. Would love to get one of his records on Vinyl.
Saw AJJ back in 2009 at Dry River Collective, and again in 2011 at Toxic Ranch Records. At that first show, Sean's guitar pick fell inside his guitar so I gave him one out of my wallet. Great band, nice dudes.
Love these guys. I've seen them a few times. I think they're one of the many, many bands that played the Alamo punk house in Minneapolis back in the day, too. Champipple tonight!
AJJ was more prominent in the blogosphere around the late 2000's early 2010's folk punk scene. Great stuff! Saw them open for a different band in 2010 having no idea who they were and was blown away!
1:47 he is right! mine is geogaddi :D edit: i knew this dude was gonna bring up the good stuff as soon as i saw that death shirt and he did not disappoint edit 2: i liked the variety everyone brought in general too
I love this channel and Record Store. This dude is wearing a Fuckin DEATH shirt and he’s recommending ambient art music by Ross G. So many good recommendations on this channel.
The taller one with the bigger beard looks and sounds like Jim Henson. Was waiting for him to pull a muppet out of his bag. The other one wearing a DEATH shirt, doesn't buy anything evening REMOTELY close to rock music. Does he even listen to metal/Death Metal? Or was it just a cool looking shirt?
Remember when it was just the two dudes. People II the reckoning is one of my all time favorite songs.
Hate rain on me ❤
AJJ seem like really nice guys. It's always great when everyone has their own eclectic tastes like this.

I lived in Vegas for 11 years and moved back East a couple years ago. Whenever I see someone mention Zia, I am filled with warmth. I miss those stores
ajj is one of my all time favorite bands, & I’m so happy they’re finally on what’s in my bag!!!!!!!!!!
Great seeing Jason Molina on here! The Magnolia Electric Co. by Songs: Ohia is one of my all-time favorite albums.
That juxtaposition of Texas Chainsaw tshirt and the last two Talk Talk releases is delightful. Mark Hollis might have been tickled by it. RIP Mark.
P.S. Play After The Flood on a rainy day and you'll feel harmony around.
Can't go wrong with Laughing Stock by Talk Talk ! 👍
I love all their stuff, including Mark's amazing solo record.
As a run of three consecutive albums, The Colour of Spring, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock must be one of the best in the history of rock and pop music. Still as fresh today as it was all those years ago.
@@TheDiamond2009 👍
I adore this band. I saw them live 10 years ago but didn't realize how good of guys they were. What a treat.

I’ve waited for this day for years!
Thank you amoeba, this series really is great in so many ways. Great episode, as always
They are incredible! I was at the Glasgow show they wound up releasing live. They kicked total ass
I'm a DJ at my college's radio station. Branko Mataja has become a sort of folk hero among a certain contingent of us. So glad seeing him get more attention.
This was a fantastic session! Thanks AJJ for sharing your diverse tastes in music! Cheers Y'all
Love their eclectic picks! Love "What's in My Bag?" so much - it's a fantastic music education resource!
First time I saw Swans, Xiu Xiu's founder did an opening set of noise, just amazing and fried one of the monitors lol.

People Who Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World and Knife Man are my fav albums by them.
@@barnziee Thanks for the recs, man. I just realized I was aware of them, under their old name.
@@dpclerks09 They just put out a new album too, Disposable Everything, and I like it quite a bit! It's really good!
@@squillz8310 Thank you for sharing! I'll check it out.
Croatian artist, thats very obscure.thanks 🎉
Never thought I'd live to see the day someone talked about the Shahenshah, Nusrat fateh ali khan on WIMB! Still the unsurpassed king of Qawaali. Would love to get one of his records on Vinyl.
i adore these guys, im expecting their new record in the mail today and im sooo excited for it!🤠
As soon as I saw the Jeff Rosenstock t-shirt, I knew these picks were gonna be fire. 😎❤️
Only ones I already knew were Talk Talk and Kate Bush. Can’t wait to check out all these other albums
Saw AJJ back in 2009 at Dry River Collective, and again in 2011 at Toxic Ranch Records. At that first show, Sean's guitar pick fell inside his guitar so I gave him one out of my wallet. Great band, nice dudes.
That Branko Mataja record is so good!
I’d never heard if it and I just listened to it. It’s amazing. So many good choices on this episode. 👍🏽
i love All Jism Jams!!
theyre such a good band live
love these guys... i'm not surprised they have good picks!
they're all wearing shirts of stuff i love... jeff rosenstock, death, texas chainsaw massacre, blue-brownish flannel
Death the band, or the concept?
Holy shit Ben looks like somebody's dad now lol, love to see that these guys all seem to be doing well.
was NOT expecting the quirky folk punk band to pull out the fucking Laughing Stock
my favorite band ever
Love seeing some appreciation for Kate Bush's Red shoes. So underrated!!
Haven't heard much of this band, but I would have never guessed I'd see homie in a Death shirt. Thumbs up for sure.
Mentioning Talk Talk when talking about good music is always the right thing to do 😊👍.
Favorite band of all time right here
Really????
Talk Talk, Boards of Canada AND Kate Bush? You guys have incredible taste
Saw them live in Australia supporting The Smith Street Band. Their stage presence and energy blew me away.
Please get Protomartyr on here!
Dang that's a good line up, those two together
I love AJJ so much.
Great grabs!
saw them in Chicago a few years ago, just saw them again last night in STL... and they still got it!!! :)
What sweet boys they are. All good picks
So weird. I somehow just discovered Jason Molina the day before yesterday. Breathtaking stuff.
Kate Bush and Talk Talk. Somebody has good taste.
Holy S*** I was listening to AJJ and reminiscing about them earlier today!😮
Love the Death t-shirt, and the Boards of Canada
Great taste all around
Boards of Canada is a great choice!
Love these guys. I've seen them a few times. I think they're one of the many, many bands that played the Alamo punk house in Minneapolis back in the day, too. Champipple tonight!
The last two Talk Talk albums are criminally overlooked.
They’re top tier, but I’d argue that Colour of Spring is in that class too, one of my favourites of all time.
Great selections. Never heard of the band before.
AJJ was more prominent in the blogosphere around the late 2000's early 2010's folk punk scene. Great stuff!
Saw them open for a different band in 2010 having no idea who they were and was blown away!
They had a different name before (Andrew Jackson Jihad), but that was changed bc of reasons.
@@NoukSilver indeed! I was on the fence about using it hahah
@@alexanderperez5636 that late 00s- early 2010s blog era hits different. And that's for mostly every (sub) genre new or old.
It's cool to hear KXCI being mentioned. Tune your radio to 91.3 if you're in Tucson.
Thank you amoeba records for having this channel up and running
"I think this album [Ignore Grief by Xiu Xiu] might be more modern classical kinda shit" oh boy, is he in for a real surprise...
The Sasami album is top 3 album of 2022 imo.
Ah, American Jiu-Jitsu- they’re like my Nusrat.
1:47 he is right! mine is geogaddi :D
edit: i knew this dude was gonna bring up the good stuff as soon as i saw that death shirt and he did not disappoint
edit 2: i liked the variety everyone brought in general too
Mine’s also geogaddi lol
Some great picks there. Yeah man
Nice DEATH shirt Mark 🫡🤘
Cool guys. Fine interesting choices. BOC is great stuff.

Loving the Jeff rosenstock t shirt!!!
AJJ is dope
More like nope.

And with a death band represented, i fuck with anyone who's got respect for chuck!
great recs
I love this channel and Record Store. This dude is wearing a Fuckin DEATH shirt and he’s recommending ambient art music by Ross G. So many good recommendations on this channel.
Ben showed me a lot of good music growing up.
I too have a wife who got me into the B52s 1st album😊

Jason Molina 🎉
That Jeff Rosenstock shirt too! :D

branko mataja aloooooo
Yay yippie yayyyyy!!! Finally
AJJ!
From Kool Keith to Talk Talk....not bad at all....
Welp, just learned I’ve been mispronouncing Songs: Ohia for 20 years.
RIP Ras G 🔥 💚
Edit: RIP JASON MOLINA 😭💔
great
I hope one day people will actually pronounce “Xiu xiu” correctly.
Dude's wearing a Death shirt but no love for OSDM?😪Great picks anyway!
Oh RAS!!
Eclectic
its pronounced ohia not ohia😜….actually you can hear jason say it in interviews, its a regional pronunciation of Ohio (according to his biographer)
you should have AJR in the next video
wait it’s Songs: “O-hee-a???”
Gosh…
Just got schooled. I always thought it was Songs: Ohio too.
Hipsters.
Jason Molina 😪
I preferred it when it was just one guy with a guitar called Andrew Jackson Jihad.
Wooo!! Andrew Jackson Jihad!!!
Rip ras g
666th Like, Sweet!
Fucc the devil
i will never not mix up ajj and ajr, which sucks because one band is awesome and the other is terrible.
It's pronounced oh high uh
white!
FWP
Boards of Canada are so exhaustingly boring.
Bring back Andrew Jackson jihad
Granted I'm not in much of a place to speak but I wonder if people found it that offensive and it's a WAAYY better name
