Was wondering the same. Given that we’ve got self-driving cars now I feel like we could go to small cameras only with interior screens instead of side mirrors. Perhaps if the regulators feel they are still desirable in an emergency, have the physical mirrors stowed in the trunk and capable of being fastened into place should the camera malfunction.
@@sjsomething4936I drove away in my ID4 one night and was several miles down the road when I realized my mirrors hadn’t opened up from the folded in position which is automatic when shutting off the car. @@4rwayner7 yes, for whatever reason regulators seem to be clinging to mirrors. Unfortunate about the ID.4, I assume it did get fixed. It’s kind of funny really, there’s quite a bit more that can go wrong with physical elements that require actuation like the folding mirrors than a camera system, and being able to simply fasten the old-school mirrors kept in the trunk if the camera fails for some reason seems like a good alternative, would reduce gas emissions on ICE vehicles and provide additional range on EVs.

Now if only Lucid can fix their stock price! But I want a Lucid yet worry about the lack of service centers, just like with Tesla. I do like the how many miles per minute of charge idea. That is exactly what consumers want to know!
I've had mine for two and a half years. Live in Dallas area w/ nearest service in Houston, several hours away. Local service truck has visited me several times to check simple recalls on my early car and make a few adjustments. One recall needed shop service so they made an appointment to pick up my car and leave a loaner. Service has been first class and flawless.
This is hilarious. Lucid explaining to Munro Live how to design everything for maximum efficiency, showing all these details of how great their designs and manufacturing are. How they're doing it all right ... when we all know that just back in May they were losing $400,000 on every car they sold.
Tesla make up at best a small proportion of their videos, so that’s not true. As for advanced technology - are you sure? Lucid have sold a handful of vehicles and the evidence is actually that they’re not in any way more advanced. Could you share with us how you feel they are in fact so?
Exactly. "Curing ovens" - is Tesla requiring same, it’ll be impossible for unboxed process as almost last step. Just leave entire car out in Texan / Nevadan sun for few hours.
This Lucid representative knows what he is talking about which is refreshing. But the only thing is the software is a major part of the car's efficiency as well, but that is not his expertise.
Amazing interview !!! Love what Lucid is doing. Unfortunately, they went high-end and didn't make a more affordable version. If they would've have built a version in $50k to $60k range and sold a bunch to get started, then come out with a luxury version. But at $160k, the average family isn't able to afford that. I hope they survive, but they need to pivot with a more affordable version.
One I noticed was how their solution to the radiator taking up frunk space was to install two radiators. Surely that complicates everything and drives up cost?
would have been nice if they shared more new info about the Gravity. All these info already available from their youtubwe channel. Lucid likely would find more success with the Air now that Tesla has too much on their plate, unlikely to update the Model S permanently.
I can't explain why, but I find their design elegant and beautiful, but incredibly boring at the same time. And the impressive engineering that goes into the "incredible efficiency" at the expense of production efficiency is a disappointment. It's like throwing away dollars to save pennies. And the world can't benefit all that much from this efficiency when you can only produce and sell 600 of these a month. Tesla may not be quite as efficient, but they've replaced over 5 million ICE vehicles. Lucid only tens of thousands.
Because this video is so aero oriented can someone discuss a comment that was made on the State of Charge channel TM stated that with an identical headwind and tailwind the tailwind wouldn’t have as much effect. It seems with most cars the cda would be much higher from the back than the front and be the opposite of what was stated. It was a 70 mph range test round trip.
Tom Moloughney just discussed and demonstrated the opposite. I think you misunderstood him. He said it would equal out due to travelling the same distance in each direction, but ultimately have a negative impact.
@@Miata822 No. At approximately the 35 minute point of the video he specifically states that you won’t get back the same efficiency effect with the tailwind as lost with the headwind. That’s why I asked. I wanted an aero/engineering comment and not a fan rebuttal. I am a fan of Tom’s but he occasionally makes off-the-cuff comments not based on engineering or technical knowledge. I watched a second time to be sure what he said and get the time stamp.
He said an equivalent tailwind won't show up in energy consumption as an equal headwind. His trips are both directions, so any benefit from tailwind is partially offset by headwind but it's not a one to one impact, so the efficiency observed was real and not the result of beneficial wind direction.
I took the trouble to read all the comments, I see a lot of hate from Tesla users. However, I take this as a documentary, a historical record. Think in these years how many attempts were made, how many promises were not fulfilled and vanished. From an engineering point of view it is a tremendous achievement that the model is available to the public. However, remembering the words of an Italian engineer quoting Ferruccio Lamborghini about Bugatti that "it takes an industrialist" and that Elon learned that the hard way, I remember that he wished him the best success because he knows how difficult it is to make everything profitable an operation. I hope they can survive and continue their path of innovation with a different vision than Tesla, that feeds back to both.
Elon wasn't from the car or manufacturing world. Rawlinson has spent his entire career running automotive engineering departments from Jaguar to Lotus to Tesla. Lucid won't need the ten years it took Tesla to get rolling.
@@Miata822 The company was initially founded in 2007 and switched to producing cars in 2016 when they changed their name. Impressive tech! What about efficiency of production? Are the Saudi backers worried that Lucid is losing around $300,000 per car sold? When will there be a profit on each car sold?
it would be nice to see finally Lucid avoiding the bankruptcy. An amazing hardware engineering, but unfortunately way too expensive and difficult to find a marketing niche. The software....well.... a few years behind Tesla. I would say that they need an equivalent to model 3 or Y for increasing the sells. Luxury segment for EVs, is in trouble.

@@Miata822 Oh, so that's why they sold so many! By the way, Tesla make a nice profit on each "S" sold, how much profit does Lucid make? (hint" they loose 100s of thousands on each car!)
@@4rwayner7 The irony of discussing the minutia of drag reduction under the shadow of the loaded roof rack (and a bike on the Gravity video) must have escaped them. According to their Financial Statements, the cost of each car is hundreds of thousands more than the selling price. If they sold >10x as many, they'd still lose money.
@@shazam6274 you are trying to say the fabrication of each car is hundreds of thousands dollars? That’s delusional. You don’t have a clue what the cda of a bicycle or rack or kayak is. When towing a trailer with a pickup it only halves the efficiency with weight and aero losses.
Great video and impressive company product. Lucid has incredible design and engineering but I hope they can work to a mass market product fast enough to have economy of scale to be profitable before they or the Saudis run out of money. The current line up is great for the tiny few that can afford them but that doesn't make for a long term company success or growth. Good luck Lucid I hope you succeed.
My wife and I bought the car shown in this video last Sunday. We pick it up tomorrow (Wednesday).
i wuld love for Lucid to sell their battery modules and inverters to DIY hobbyists or shops, those battery modules would make conversions killer.
I've asked, but I suppose we'll have to wait for 'enthusiastic' owners to wrap a few around trees :-)
Finally, a video about the best EV maker in the World!
This looks amazing
All I wish from Lucid is to offer an Air-State estate car. The Gravity might do a lot of the job I need a wagon to do, but it'd be interested to see Lucid optimize a wagon boot for space AND drag somehow.
I love driving my Air around. Only down side is the tires are pretty expensive...
Efficiency is a product of aero along with powertrain efficiency and other factors also, can you have another detail session speaking about that
Lovely car. Radiators on the front corners seem vulnerable. How much mud does it take to clog up the active grille shutter?
Videos and pictures don't do the Lucid justice. I've seen one in my neighborhood and damn it's an impressive looking car.
What effect would ditching the side mirrors have on cda?
Was wondering the same. Given that we’ve got self-driving cars now I feel like we could go to small cameras only with interior screens instead of side mirrors. Perhaps if the regulators feel they are still desirable in an emergency, have the physical mirrors stowed in the trunk and capable of being fastened into place should the camera malfunction.
@@sjsomething4936 I saw a review of a car that had the camera/screen in addition to the mirror. It’s government controlled.
@@sjsomething4936I drove away in my ID4 one night and was several miles down the road when I realized my mirrors hadn’t opened up from the folded in position which is automatic when shutting off the car. I tried several things to get them to open out. I couldn’t just pull on them. It really scared me.
@@sjsomething4936 for a good reason. Mirrors work and the minor increase in efficiency is not worth the risk of not having a mirror.
I do not think an electrical engineer gives a crap about aerodynamic efficiency...from 2:30 to 5:15 Paul is thinking just shoot me...watch his expression & eyes!
Paul is dying to talk "electron efficiencies"!
Great patience Paul!
As someone who is 6'4" tall, with a long torso, it is very apparent to me that these Lucid cars have very little headroom (unless you are quite short).
When is Munro coming. I am looking forward to him fauning over the lucid tech ! He needs to give them the same credit br gives Tesla
23 minutes in, love the idea of the vortex tubes for cooling, but what happens to the active aero and vortex tubes when iced up from winter driving in snow? Do they even matter when ideally heat is brought into the cabin.

But range isn't an issue for local driving. Most EV owners charge at home, especially at this price point.
The car is beautifully engineered and designed yet it it lacking the many iterations needed to lower the production cost. Thus the car has a low(er) marging and they'll struggle to get profitable (as a company) soon. This is even more important as the demand for these cars is not large enough!

So, if it so efficient, how much does the range decrease with a horse box or a caravan? Does it become a third?

Nice advertorial as Lucid goes for a round of share dilution
This is hilarious. Lucid explaining to Munro Live how to design everything for maximum efficiency, showing all these details of how great their designs and manufacturing are. How they're doing it all right ... when we all know that just back in May they were losing $400,000 on every car they sold.
It’s not good if they don’t survive
Glad to see you guys come out of the shell and only exploring Tesla. Lucid is way more advanced technology compared to Tesla
We have tons of videos on Ford, Rivian, Hyundai, etc…
Tesla make up at best a small proportion of their videos, so that’s not true. As for advanced technology - are you sure? Lucid have sold a handful of vehicles and the evidence is actually that they’re not in any way more advanced. Could you share with us how you feel they are in fact so?
Interesting to note that the car is glued together with structural adhesive. He addressed the subject head on. Any engineers see issues with this?
It’s been common practice since the 1990s. Check out Lotus Elise for example.
Exactly. "Curing ovens" - is Tesla requiring same, it’ll be impossible for unboxed process as almost last step. Just leave entire car out in Texan / Nevadan sun for few hours.
Most beautiful cars.
This Lucid representative knows what he is talking about which is refreshing. But the only thing is the software is a major part of the car's efficiency as well, but that is not his expertise.
Look how slender the headlights are. They made an extra effort there, and every car gets a huge frunk because of it.
Do you realize the Air Pure starts at $69,900?
I lost almost $20K on LCID but I still like the cars and the engineering.
I see a lot of unnecessary overhead
One I noticed was how their solution to the radiator taking up frunk space was to install two radiators. Surely that complicates everything and drives up cost?
Life is a compromise. You choose what gives, right ?
would have been nice if they shared more new info about the Gravity.
Lucid has sold 5,766 EVs through the end of the 3rd quarter this year, ~ 640 / month. Source: KBB

( Not a bad thing actually ! )

Sandy right now is the real versión of Donald Sutherland in the movie "space cowboy" character
Hey Lucid! Monetary efficiency is a thing, too, and could save your company from its drunken spending.
Sure, they could cut back on service personnel and parts inventory like Tesla does, but they don't.

I'd lease one but I don't like the company ownership but still considering..
Is the diffuser not a misnomer on this vehicle? Not rather the opposite, a fuser?
Lucid won't need the ten years it took Tesla to get rolling.

it would be nice to see finally Lucid avoiding the bankruptcy. An amazing hardware engineering, but unfortunately way too expensive and difficult to find a marketing niche. The software....well.... a few years behind Tesla. I would say that they need an equivalent to model 3 or Y for increasing the sells. Luxury segment for EVs, is in trouble.
