      Agreed. Tesla was built strategically to upend convention and market forces to become the most economically sound auto manufacturer in history. An incentive structure that produced 2 of the best per dollar mass production vehicles the world has ever seen.
      With all that said, I'm rooting for Lucid. Their high-resolution strategy will hopefully continue to deliver state of the art engineering and an ultimate example for those who can afford it. That can only be a positive for the industry and EV adoption more broadly.

    Wow, I knew Lucid had some impressive engineering, but I feel like this is next level. Aesthetically those drive units are a work of art, completely aside from the compactness, efficiency and scalability. The differential inside the rotor was genius. Having everything balanced and inline with the axle surely cuts down on NVH as well.

    It is evident that Lucid was born in Formula One Electric. This level of energy and space efficiency is core to Formula One, be it ICE or BEV.
    Kudos to them.
    The odd thing when listening to their comments on manufacturability, why do they make so few cars? In theory they should be in the 100’s of thousands by now.

    Big magnets in your luggage: I once, when traveling between Hawaiian islands, had a large outboard motor flywheel in my bag. It wound up in the nose compartment of the 12 passenger plane. All of the magnets that energize charging and ignition are in this part. As a result, the compass in the plane always pointed the same way regardless of which way the plane was going.

    Less than ten minutes in and I'm yet again blown away by the complexity and creativity of modern engineering. In every cubic centimetre. If only I could afford one. One day I will own a compact Lucid.
    Edit: and then the motor. And on and on. Breathtaking. An outstanding presentation.
    Edit2: but all that wonderful efficiency is to drive a vehicle of over 2 tonnes in order to take eg one 100kg person to work.
    95% of trips in the US are under 31 miles if I remember correctly. Average daily mileage around 40. A grossly inefficient use of precious resources.

      A small company can't build mass market small cars. That's why Lucid is offering its technology to other manufacturers. The smaller Atlas drive unit for Lucid's mid-size vehicles (starting late '26) should sell well into the global mass market through other existing mass manufacturers.

    • @adrianleitch6996
      @adrianleitch6996 19 днів тому +2

      Would love to see a small-mid sized car with all this efficient inverter/motor tech, the absolute latest battery tech, then manage say 250 miles on a charge from a 'small' 40kWh battery or something, maximise usable space in it's smaller footprint, weigh like 1.2 ton and be the most efficient 'regular' car by far. Aptera is going to be darned efficient but a bit too far out of the mainstream. Was hoping for a Tesla Model 2 but the Cybercab is taking all that love, it didn't even need to be a 25k car either tbh, say 30k don't care, give me something with all the good tech and great efficiency and smart packaging that should be possible in an EV please someone.

    • @spdcrzy
      @spdcrzy 18 днів тому

      @@adrianleitch6996 precisely. Lucid needs to go even smaller. But knowing that their CEO can trace his beginnings all the way back directly to Colin Chapman is a big relief. "Simplify, then add lightness" is exactly what Lucid have done here. It's incredibly heavy, yes, but that is simply a byproduct of modern battery technology. I think by 2030 we'll see Lucids with 300 mile ranges that weigh less than 4000lb and still put out 400+hp. E39 M5 performance, anyone?

    I thought the trunk molding and undercut manufacturing and assembly process had to be super expensive. Nope! It's just really, REALLY smart. I just really hope that Lucid realizes this and makes as much of their product user-replaceable and user-repairable as possible. Even in the front fascia, where there are so many super expensive components, EVERYTHING seems to be held on with screws and bolts instead of adhesives (or worse, clips) which makes things easier to repair (even if they're not as cheap). Their battery modules are a really good example - the pack is modular, the modules themselves are simple and ALSO modular without any unnecessary bonding or adhesive agents, the busbar is lightweight and made of aluminum, and the ballistic shield protects all of it. And the entire underfloor is also bolted in instead of welded or bonded to the structure - great for repair and service.

When tesla did it, there was no tesla, rivian, byd, etc to compare to.. nissan had the leaf, and gm long discontinued their ev1 when tesla was selling model S. Model 3 was out before lucid started..and sold model y before lucid began selling their first cars.. now model y is best selling vehicle world wide 2023 nearly 1.3 million sold, lucid still hasn't made more then 10k+ cars in a single year. Lucid is still at the roadster level tesla was in 2011 with worse financials, and tesla is out here selling more cybertrucks then all other ev trucks combined. Scaling their semi truck, launching cyber cab, it is just not even comparable. Lucid trying the tesla model but a decade late and funded by saudis not us investors. A lot harder to get behind especially when ev competition is already high and continually increasing. Also not even considering tesla megapack storage biz (10% of revenue prior quarter) and growing, or solar, battery production, fsd/autopilot, or tesla bot... the opportunity investing in tsla vs lucid is so obviously in favor of tesla, outside of gamblers on longshots, im not sure who investing in lucid is for.. maybe people whp think they missed the boat on tesla and want to get in at lower price on lucid.. but to be honest its clearly not even close to the same opportunity or quality of company

    Great technology and enthusiasm from the team. A real shame is that the whole company (Lucid) is now worth less than 7 billion dollars (Petty cash for Tesla) Lucid has fallen another 5% today having already fallen 45% in the last 12 months. I do hope that even if Lucid fails into bankruptcy that all this great technology lives on with a company that will use all their great research and patents. It is very hard to see how Lucid can scale to profitability fast enough to survive.
    Lucid Motors, a California-based electric vehicle has lost varying amounts per car sold, including:
    Q1 2024: Lucid lost around $350,000 per car delivered
    Q2 2023: Lucid lost around $338,000 per car made
    Q3 2023: Lucid lost over $227,000 per car sold
    March 2024: Lucid lost $400,000 per car sold

    That twin rear drive unit allows a very capable RWD sport/supercar like the Porsche 911 GT2RS, AMG GT Blackline, etc.
    Mate it to a battery that is not overly big and a light chassis and body, and total weight could get close to that GT2RS or Ferrari 12cilindri or Aston Martin Vanquish. Torque vectoring is very handy and the twin motor allows ~700 hp for a lot of time with higher peak bursts.

    I’m starting to understand that Lucid is marketing themselves more like a watchmaker than a car company. They use terms such as “in-house” as a differentiation because there are cheaper and more efficient systems out there but that doesn’t seem to be their goal. They are marketing luxury and technical novelty over profitability.

      they have been upfront about being a luxury electric car maker, and making other luxury ICE manufacturer as their competitor, but they're bleeding money in achieving their goal in a market share that are too minute to begin with. It's important to strive for ambitious goal, but more importantly to make money while you're getting there, which is what Tesla did. Doubt Lucid could achieve that without someone like Elon at the helm.

    Lucid's technology and integrated design ethic, coupled with the focus on ensuring that all of that can be manufactured in the most efficient way possible, makes the company altogether different from any other in the business (including Tesla).
    The concern is that the present market demand, and the price point at which Lucid is seeking to sell its vehicles (luxury, expensive), will result in a commercial failure.
    I hope that Lucid's biggest investors, including the Saudis, keep the faith (in the product and the amazing engineering personnel who have pulled it all together).
