You're amazing. I'm a 38 year old bloke and thanks to you I've just embroidered my first cushion cover. You're so endearing x
Well done Stu! And thank you for the kind comments. I hope you are loving your stitching hobby and are already planning your next project!
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery i just watched the one where you embroider a butterfly on a blouse so now ill try something like that. And I'm going to couch stitch some glowing EDL wire onto an old coat with flowers on it too, after watching your 4 stitches for lettering lol. Thank you so much x
@@psychosoma5049 Sarah’s shaded Snowdrop is a beautiful work of art. I’m going to try it and also her field poppies are gorgeous.
@@psychosoma5049 What is EDL wire,please
And I'm a 57 year old bloke so you're not alone! :)
I'm an old rocker and I embroider rock themed designs onto denim jackets, so here's a practical tip for embroidering 'solid' designs onto denim and similar really tough fabrics. It's really hard work to sew through denim making it tough on your hands and the silks, so I basically cheat. I do most of the design on light fabric in a hoop leaving just the perimeter of the design unfinished. I then trim the design fabric right to the edge of the design before tacking it into position on the denim jacket, then finally I embroider just the perimeter through both layers. The finished effect really does look like the entire design is embroidered directly onto the denim (unless you look on the inside of course). This also makes it possible to sew far more intricate detail than is practical through denim (I guess it would be possible, but it would be a pretty thankles task).
I once embroidered a beautiful vest with flowers and butterflies, and even worked my initials into the vines. I handmade the vest and the matching skirt, too. I wish I still had pictures of the outfit.
I didn't know about starting stitches before this!
Beautiful work I love it thank you very much ❤️😘🌹
I do alot of cross stitch but embroidery has always scared me. Thanks to your amazing tutorial videos I feel confident in giving things ago!! Thank you x
I'm learning so much by watching your videos. 😊
Thank you soo much Sarah. My embroidery has improved immensely since watching your tutorials. My creativity has improved as well. Thanks again. 🙂😘
Glad you are enjoying Connie!
Beautiful
This is what I’ve been searching for a long time. I can’t find anywhere that tells me how to properly start and finish. Those videos are mostly stabilizer…etc. I don’t want to buy that many products. They never showed the back, which I assumed might be a mess and uncomfortable to wear. So far I’m only embroidered on the area that completely covered in the back like cuffs, neckline with facing, yoke or fake pockets. And only items that I sew myself. There’s a lots of items I want to embroidering but still unsure. This video gave me such a joy really. Now I can stitch whatever and wherever I wanted. Thank you. ❤
Thanks for watching and your kind feedback!
I love your videos! ❤
Lovely 3-part tutorial!! Thank you! How wonderfully lucky you were to train in your 3-year apprenticeship!! What a wealth of experience & knowledge you must have, but above all, you have a true admiration for handmade sewing & embroidery!!
I’m so excited to have subscribed to your channel!!👍🏻👍🏻🤗🤗👏🏻
Thank you for this tutorial. You make such tidy stitches. I sure will need to practice.
Beautiful, love the butterfly embroidery. Thank you for sharing.
My first attempt at embroidery ...I absolutely love this. Your presentation is detailed, calming and thorough. You have extraordinary talent. Thank you from America.
Thank you so much Judy! I hope you enjoyed stitching yoru first piece...
I second that
Wonderful tutorial thank you. Just wondering how to anchor and finish off thread when doing these stitches.
Mam I from India ...love your videos
Lovely stitching
You make it look so easy! I've got my pattern all printed & ready but I think I'll practice on some material before I attempt it on my clothes 😄 Thank you for sharing all these tutorials.
I've been doing it a long time Jane! Have a little go at each stitch on a spare piece of fabric (cotton is good if you have it) as a 'warm up' and then you will be good to go!
Love this project 🙏🏽🙋🏻♀️👍🏽
This video helped me to finally do my first stitches after watching for a couple weeks. Why is it so hard to get started? I am a painter, journaler, sewer and felter. I want to add embroidery to my set of skills. Thanks to your videos I was able to purchase the necessary tools and threads to get started.
Check out my video about sampling Sherry, this will help you to get going on projects!
Love your embroidery 👌
Very pretty!
The eyelet stitch is so pretty Sarah and the French knot too, actually I love most of them and greatly enjoy learning more, thank you again, Sarah, for sharing your knowledge on this beautiful skill.
Have you been listening to me all Sunday Minerva 502?! Glad you are enjoying, and thank you for your kind comments...x
Sarah,I have learned so much since I found you on Utube. Thanks for sharing your talent.

Did a variation of this on a thick linen with medium strand. Used warm colors because I want to save the cool tones for later, and it was good to try the design out first on something that I do not wear daily! Just beginning. It looks a little medieval with brown and linen. :) Particularly love the French knot texture. Now on to the next...
Beautiful.
Thank you Sarah for teaching stitches in very simpler way, anybody can learn..😊
I learnt shisha work from your videos thank you. Please show tear drop and square mirror embroidery
A suqare one is the same as a round one Sabitha, just imagine the round one with corners on! I'll look at doing one for teardrop mirrors...
Thank you Sarah..😊
Thank you ♡
I really love the away knot’s use!🤩 they tidy up the work so well❣️💖Beautiful work😍❣️ thank you very much 🙏🏻💫
Oh wonderful, have never been on your website so will need to go over & check it out. Thank you
Do take a look Roberta, we have lots of inspiration on there with a gallery and a free design page as well as lots of lovely nice things in our shop...
Well done 👍
Very helpful Sarah, I've been cross stitching for a few years now and am ready to move on to some simple embroidery. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge in easy to follow format. May start with some pillow case decoration.
Leaving the safety of the holes! Just start small Janet and before you know it you will love the freedom...
You are amazing.
Thank you Sarah for this lovely video. I have done embroidery on cushions and for framing but never thought to do it on my own clothes. Go figure🤣😁 I will certainly give this a go. 💖
Have a delve in your wardrobe Sue!
Very nice
what do you use on the backside of your work to protect from many washings for clothing or say dish towels that will be washed frequently?
This is a great selling tool bc watching this doesn't feel like I'm watching a commercial. I'm sure if you've been over here, you've fallen victim to America's way of advertising, which is extremely LOUD. I was watching you on the different ways of drawing on the fabric and you had me wanting to buy the blue pen.
I still can't wrap my mind around why it doesn't fall or fray off the clothes 😮
for the back stitch are you going in the SAME EXACT hole when when inserting the needle backwards?
I'm sorry to say I messed up the butterfly by assuming that any thread would do, in particular by using a thread with a metallic component. This was not much of an issue for outlines (though it sometimes required adaptation, for example by going down a neighbouring hole rather than the same hole for a chain stitch), but when it comes to filling in areas with french knots that already contain starting stitches, it turns out that metallic threads are a bad idea! On the other hand, I'm hoping that practicing with challenging threads will make working with regular threads seem easy!
So far I only have one complete embroidery project under my belt, and since then I've moved house and got myself a dedicated craft room, so I thought the butterfly would be a good way of getting back into practice. A crewel project awaits (candamar 40238) but before I attempt that I want to build up my confidence. I'm also interested in exploring bead work in the future. Your videos are an integral part of my self-teaching plans.
I have a video on using metallic thread apm, so do check that out. If you are a beginner I would stick to cotton to start with while you gain some experience as the metallic can be a bit tricky! Also check out my video on Sampling, I think you will find this really useful
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery Thanks, Sarah. So far I've done most of my practicing and sampling on one giant piece of material (a disassembled pillowcase). There are a number of things I need to practice before I start on the crewel project I have lined up (which is from my mum's collection; unfortunately arthritis in the fingers means she would no longer be able to do it herself), including the use of a larger hoop, the use of medium-thickness threads, separating and reassembling threads into plies, satin stitches, long and short stitches, split stitches as fill stitches, etc. I will definitely sample everything.
Sarah, I love watching your channel! I've recently taken up embroidery and have found your channel to be so helpful. Your butterfly is gorgeous and I love the thread you've chosen for this. When using that type of thread, how many strands do you use?
See my video on 'stranded threads' Carolyn!
64 year old beginner, I remember embroidering as a young girl but was never shown the beginning and ending stitching....no wonder my early work was so full of knots!!! lol, question, what are you using for your stand? I got one that fits under my thigh but it isn't stable as I'd like, your set up looks so stable...would like to give it a try.
I just started watching ur videos and you are AMAZING! I was wondering if this would hold up in the machine wash and what setting it should be? Are there ways to make the ends more resistant to wash (on a hoodie)? I don’t want my work falling apart 😢
I would recommend washing the item you are going to stitch on first so there isn't any shrinkage! The Lana thread I have used is good to wash (45c) and you can iron on a delicate setting. If you are using other threads then check out their technical specs first
How is it that after cutting off the knot, it stays safely in the material?
are you using a stabilizer?
Hi - would we add a stabiliser or a backing fabric at all? I would like to do a simple stitch on a sweatshirt but all the way around the front and back and not sure if I would need a backing fabric or stabiliser on sweatshirt jersey? Sorry if a silly question I have never embroidered on clothes before and always thought I needed a stabiliser but notice you don't use this here and it has turned out beautifully x
this blouse is a see-through fabric. what do you do with a darker-thicker fabric?
Can you embroider right in sweater front?
OMG - this is likely just what I've been searching for for days! I want to make my granddaughter a skirt (made with quilting cotton, I think it's called) and do some embroidery on it. I've been thinking I need to use some kind of stabilizer. Apparently there are some water-soluable ones that people use to draw their embroidery design on and then remove when embroidery done. It seems that is unnecessary. I was going to use DMC 100% cotton (widely available in Canada). I will, of course, prewash my cotton fabric because cotton does shrink a fair bit. Do I need to worry about the embroidery shrinking? Love your channel and have subscribed.
We have a video on the DMC Magic Paper but you could just use some interfacing on the back Mary. The embroidery won't shrink but yes wash the item before you stitch!
Can i please ask why you dont start the thread where you start the stitch?
Do you have to use a stabilizer or interfacing? What’s the difference? What do you recommend?
what a gd question! - sadly no answer so far but if you get or find an answer to it i would really appreciate it if you would tell me 🤗
Nice. You sound like cricket commentary which was on radio years back.
Is that a good thing Anubha?! :)
Certainly. Very soothing & meditative.
Hi just found your channel and im a total newbie ive watched the video and would like to try but when i go to your site i can't seem to find the butterfly ? Tfs
Sorry Kazza1428, the link was broken but I've fixed it now. You can get the butterfly design directly from this page here:
www.sarahhomfray.com/free-stuff.html
Hope you have fun stitching it!
Love the first two videos, I am watching this third one and the link to the free butterfly pattern just takes me to page 404 not found!
It seems fixed now, I just down loaded it
I've tried them all and I think they are all working Debra so just refresh your page if the 404 is still showing
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery Thanks Sarah all is good now.
Hello Sarah! as far as i see, nothing else is needed on clothing, plus, is not going to be visible because is in the back, but i was wondering what about a table runner, the back is not going to be "visible" but at the same time it's not like a piece of clothing, i mean the back is not hide, i do not know if you understand what i mean, i recently started embroidery because i want to make extra money, your videos are very useful! thank you! hoping you can see this comment.
Check out my video on 'The back of your embroidery, does it matter' for some tips on how to handle this nimoe
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery thank you!
@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery can you give me embroidery PDF I am not getting that!
How do you decide how many strands to use?
See my video all about stranded cottons Deb T!
Can’t find the pdf if butterfly 😮

Can't see where to download PDF
In the description underneath the video Janet
What do you do with all the excess thread on the reverse do you cover it up with more fabric?
As long as you finished off the ends neatly and securely then you don't have to cover it up F Faro, but you could iron on some interafcing if you wanted a bit of extra support
