What Happened To The Gorillaz Illusion?

Let's just get right to the question: Is the Gorillaz Illusion gone? Well yes, hence I am making this video. But why how when? Well, let me tell you and feel free to comment and tell me what you think. Now let's go back not so long ago to Plastic Beach, Phase 3. Let me fill in the context. It's 2010 and We are introduced to Cyborg Noodle, Gorillaz.com has got a new look, and we have left on a cliffhanger since Slowboat To Hades the phase before. All questions eventually get answered and then fast forward 5 years after the mysterious Do Ya Thing video. It's phase 4 and Humanz just released and now we don’t have anything… No website, no new characters, and no straight lore to follow… Well, what happened?

I think Damon & Jamie just dont have the same drive as they had for the gorillaz mythos as they used to do during demon days and plastic beach. They've made attempts over the years but they either get turned down, restricted, or simply cancelled, so they'd rather just stick to animations, art, and merch and leaving the characters as just that, characters.

I'm so glad a video like this exists now! I've been wondering if people ever talked about this whole thing or if they ever thought about it and never saw much. This talks about things I'd been thinking of since I got into them and it's honestly a bit sad but understandable as to why some of these things were done. Still, I wish the illusion of it was there...

i do think that the illusion is gone the first 3 phases are my favs but it just hasnt been the same lore wise since.

To me the very first step towards the vanishing of the illusion was during the Hong Kong performance in Demon Days Live in which Damon literally stepped into the spotlight to sing. Even if it was obvious there were people playing in the shadows, Damon had never shown his face to the public during the Phase One tour.

i just hope that gorillaz inspires future bands to do the same as what they did on the early phases, and hopefully they'll be as or more sucessful, especially when it comes to animated projects, cuz they got done hella dirty on that and u cant rlly blame it on them. im sad the illusion is gone but bc of how things are, i can understand and see why they gave up.

Maybe the illusion is gone, but think there is a complementary bond between the art and the tracks. The live show are *incredible*🤩🤩🤩 but it is equally due to the talent of the performers along AND the visual projections that accompany each song. Both are better with the other and the mythos is part of the link.
