I'm a big fan of legends who don't get LED ZEPPELIN, but I hold them in high regard .saw them twice, and they were thunder and lightning a bottle. another thing I will point out is...I said it before (and you know the rest) that their sort of controversial first LP (they were sued by Willie Dixon)is first rate blues, and may I add that 'Since I've been loving you' (which to my knowledge is 100% written by the band), features some of Page's best lead guitar playing, and possibly lb. for lb., his best! like BB King, Stevie Ray, and Clapton, he could play softly and sadly, LOUDLY, and w/ plenty of attitude. and in the middle of that great playing and screaching by Plant, he plays a riff that comes out of the speakers like a lightning bolt comes out of the sky. a sonic moment for sure.
They were sued by Dixon for the second album. On the first album they fully credited Dixon 100% for You Shook Me and I Can't Quit You Baby. Dixon never thanked them for covering two of his songs and making money for him.

As a Zep fan, I ask you, do you understand English poorly? Jagger spoke completely positively about Zeppelin. Where is the problem? Hope you're not one of those sick Zep fan boys who can't think objectively anymore. There are strange fans of every band who no longer understand what is being said...
y'know the photo w/ Watts and a jackass hauling guitars, and them having a show called ROCK & ROLL CIRCUS, well probably because of that stuff, I used to tell people that they were as close to a Circus as a Rock band could get, and that they'd be around as long as the Barnum & Bailey/Ringling Bros. Circus . well on that second part I was more right than I expected to be. they have been a travelling show since the early to mid-'60's.
I love the music of Led Zeppelin. It was magical and so very creative. Songs like Heartbreaker, Misty Mountain Hop, Since I been lovin you...Incredible, Brilliant lead guitar playing, superb drumming and outstanding vocal range from Robert Plant. All supported by fantastic guitar from John Paul Jones. I first heard them on the radio at school in 1969 and was blown away by them. Later I saw them in concert in Auckland, New Zealand in the early 1970s and really loved what they did.
They're one of the bands that changed everything. Look how many bands copied their formula. There formula went on for 40 years. Every band look like Zeppelin and sounded like Zeppelin. They're one of the game changers
And Jones. But he didn't think much of Bonham or Plant it seems. He thought the vocals were over the top and the drumming was one dimensional according to the interview I saw.
@@iansharp7422 I think if one reads between the lines Keef wasn’t crazy about Zeppelin because they had the rock but no roll. That is, you can’t dance to Zep.
I was there for that particular concert. Plant was getting over a bad cold and did not sing well at all. Page had an injured hand, and was ok, but really not on his game. Bonham and Jones were fine. As a huge Zep fan then and now, it was sadly not a great show, and was disappointed. You can find some bootleg footage, and it is as I remembered.
@@36karpatoruskiYeah I saw Zeppelin on Jan 29th Physical Graffiti tour Greensboro Coliseum NC and Page had a broken finger and Plant was suffering from a sore throat not a good night for them for sure. Fortunately I saw them again on Mag 31rst Presence tour 77 John Bonham's birthday party and it was a 3 hour 37 minutes brilliant performance. Cheers 😊
I was fortunate enough to see the Page and Plant tour back in the late 90's I guess. Page was astounding. A real gentleman and an inspiration in his guitar work and stage demeanor. Mr. Plant though, was more akin to a saint in my opinion. Humble throughout. Giving his all. Cordial, friendly and kind. He introduced their 18 year old mandolin player, saying, "Without this young man on tour with us, I don't think we would have been able to make it. He has literally held us all together from the start." It made me a kinder person. Mick showed kindness. Maybe "all you need is love" is right. I've always believed it after hearing John tell me so. Peace and Love!

Paul McCartney, Roger Daltrey, John Lennon, Charlie Watts etc all said good things about Zeppelin. Watts even said the Stones had to step up their game and not rest on their laurels when Zeppelin came out and played 2 1/2 to 3 hour concerts.
I dig Jagger's opinion. Agreed. And most cool, Jagger has no jealousy, or pride issues, vice the great Led Zeppelin---Jagger has always been a hip cat. Vice Keith Richards' lack of affection for Led Zeppelin's groove . . . . . to each his own. Virginia Woolf hated Hemingway's novels, and she had a very special dislike for A FAREWELL TO ARMS. However, another very well-known British writer in the 20th Century, Anthony Burgess, thought Hemingway was a genius and had especially high praise for Hemingway's masterpiece, THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA. C'est la vie.
Obviously Jagger is secure in his abilities. Unlike these other guys who are obviously so insecure and jealous that they cant even see straight. Its one thing to criticize but to say Zep never really took off? Are you kidding me? That's just crazy. My personal opinion is Elvis was king of the 50s Beatles ruled the 60s and Zeppelin the 70s. 3 best rockers of all time. Stones Cream and the Who you were great but not best. IMHO
Depends what school of rock you like. I've said for 50 years that The Stones are the greatest purveyors of American blues, and they're not even American! But personally, I believe that Zeppelin is by far the greatest rock band of all time. I don't consider the Beatles a rock band, but a pop band with three world-class composers. But without the Beatles, we don't have the rest that followed. I love all the bands you listed, but I would take Queen (live and studio) and Pink Floyd over Cream. As far as live performance, I would rate The Who tops. Honorable mention to Hendrix, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. With the exception of Hendrix, every single act mentioned is British!
Plant is not a real singer. In fact, he is not a singer, he is a screamer, and it lasted 2 or 3 albums. After that, he needed all kinds of technology to get his voice up high. He could hardly sing live in the same key as in the studio. Is there any tremolo (or vibrato) by Plant on any of the LZ albums?!
@@Paul-fg6mk Lol ..what?! What technology do you think they were using? Plant is an amazing singer and front man. Among the best ever! Have you heard his solo stuff?
I always thought the musicians who disliked Zeppelin had some jealousy involved in their view of the band. I remember Townsend saying that part of it was they were more popular then the Who and that kind of rankled. him. I don't remember what Richards said but, it still somewhat was implied his dislike was for the same reason. Clapton had a falling out with Page over some sessions they did. Clapton did not want them released as he saw it more as they were just jamming. It was not polished. Well a person who was involved in this little session jam released it without Page's approval and Clapton blamed Page. Since then he does not speak to Page and gives him the cold shoulder. Many of the people who diss the band still praise Page because he worked with many of them as a session player. Also Page was very respected in the music world and they too respected him.
I read Clapton’s biography and despise him ever since, a real piss weak scumbag, drug addled moron and serial double standard liar and betrayer of friends and his wife. I got into the stones at about 15 yrs old, they never really hooked me because I thought the music was a bit shallow and pop orientated with no real depth to it and quite simplistic, then I heard Zeppelin for the first time - blew my young teenage mind and changed me forever, the excitement of anticipating the new LZ albums was phenomenal and they never dissapointed once……..I seriously have not listened to a Rolling Stones album since Zeppelin, that’s 40yrs!!!.
I love the stones and the who and cream and Eric Clapton. But I’m sorry Led Zeppelin blows them all out of the water. Jimmy page is easily a top 3 all time guitarist. Bonham top 3 drummer. Plant is distant first rock frontman. No one compares. JPJ is insanely talented.
Glad Jagger had a different view from his colleagues. That said, I'm pretty certain that every Beatle member had good to great things to say about Zeppelin. Paul was fairly close to them, and Bonham and JPJ played in some of his recordings. Ringo was good mates with Bonham. Harrison was also good friends and in fact inspired The Rain Song. Lennon, while became secluded from 75 to 80, had great things to say about Zeppelin. There is a story out there somewhere, that I read about one of the crazy nights when Lennon was living in LA after leaving Yoko in 72. Apparently, he, Keith Moon and Bonham had a crazy night of drinking and made their way to Moons place where they were so polluted that all three began puking in a bathtub at the same time. After puking, all three looked at each other and laughed hysterically.
Harrison is on record saying he didn't like them. That doesn't mean that he never liked them or diang come to like them in the latter decades, but I'm sure that harrison said at one point he didn't like them
Zeppelin is the Greatest Rock N Roll band of all time. Mick is beyond Iconic and knew just how Brilliant Page was as well as Jonesy because he is on some of the Stones early Psychedelic Tracks. It is pitiful comments made by many of Their contemporaries that were made out of sheer jealousy. I love Cream n the Stones-The Who but They Will never Touch just how Heavy n Huge Zeppelin real was n is. What I love About Mick is he’s just being honest about his Love for Zeppelin and not letting his Ego get in the way! Rock on!
@@JustineLaLoba nice try but Zeppelin has sold over 300 million LPs world wide the Stones over 250 million world wide and what makes Zeppelins total even more impressive is the Stones have released way more LPs than Zeppelin and still have 50 million less LP sales
And, McDonald’s has sold the most hamburgers, but they still suck. So, the people have spoken. Using your logic, Eminem and Drake are way better than The Stones, Beatles, Who and Zeppelin combined, because their combined sales are way more than the British bands.
Paul Mcartney is another Zeppelin fan. He was at the O2 show and even mentions Jimmy Page in the lyrics from the song Rockshow. Who cares what some of their rivals say? its simply professional jealousy.

@@KennyCamaro2364 it was pre decided that if any of them quit etc. the band would be done. The 4 of them were like 4 parts of 1 musician, & none could just be replaced.
To be fair though, the later years of Zeppelin weren't as good as the early ones and they probably wouldn't have stayed together through the whole 80's scene anyway.
Townsend, Clapton, Ginger Baker, were threatened & envious of the fact no other band has ever remotely approached the drawing power that Led Zeppelin always commanded. No band before or since has even come close to Led Zeppelin. PERIOD !! …and they all knew it
According to Glyn Johns, Jagger disliked the first Zeppelin album. I am glad that he now takes a different view than many other contemporary musicians.
The Stones were the greatest rock band ever, and one can say that because Zep were NOT a rock band. They were something else, beyond rock. A genre they created and defined. Perhaps the only other artist who inhabited was Hendrix and the first iteration of Santana. Bands that were playing with spiritual forces that were beyond what even the greatest musicians could reach unless it touched them. Deeply primal forces. There were jazz musicians who also reached there (Miles, Bird, 'Trane, etc.) but the the music by its nature couldn't have the amplified, distorted sonic force or heaviness of beat and groove to hit you like Hendrix or Zep. Only the great traditional musics, Gnawa, Joujouka, Qawali/Sufi, Indian classical, traditional African or Afro-Latin (Brazilian/Cuban) drumming, and other forms of rhythmically grounded yet virtuosic trance music could get you there in the same way. The Stones were just the quintessence of rock n roll and the who were its operatic culmination. As for the Beatles, they were also something other than a rock band, their songwriting simply made them something else, also beyond rock n roll, but in a very different place then Zep. But all the 4 great British bands occupied their own space and we should be thankful the world had any of them, never mind all of them. As for Keef, he was good friends with Page and Bonzo and JPJ, but seemingly just never liked Plant, and I'm sure it has to do with him seeing Plant as competition for Mick. But Mick never saw it that way himself because they were operating very differently but with the same effect on an audience.
Whoa that's an excellent post with some deep thought and reflection behind it. You make some points I think ven Pagey would agree with. If you read his old interview with William Burroughs forex he discusses riff/trance fundamentals. Appreciate your contribution here!
No they were the best R & B band ever.......I loved the Stones but Zeppelin in their heyday were far superior in every way but really comes down to personal preference
Zeppelin is by far a superior Band to the Stones not even close! Nice to hear Mick speak with respect about ZEP! His emphasizing Jimmy Page is spot on its like not acknowledging Eddie VH is the Genius of Van Halen! RIP Eddie! P.S Seen all live three Live Zep, Stones and VH approx 10 times because availability in late 70s and 80s in Midwest. Side note Got Free ticket and unexpected by me went to see the WHO Kemper arena KC MO. The WHO Live like no other reign supreme LIVE Only! Best overall concert ever 78 VH opened for Black Sabbath and OZZY still front and center.
They’re all just jealous. Zepplin had it all, musicianship, lyrics, original melodies. Don’t trust all those old rockers who say they’re not good. Mick at least was honest and admitted that they’re great.
the reason Pete Townshend doesn't like Led Zeppelin is simple and on record. they became bigger than The Who. Pete and probably the Stones too felt one of them would succeed The Beatles as the biggest band and here came Led Zeppelin to take the mantle from the Beatles. Pete Townshend also stated in the interview that as individuals liked the members of the band on personal level. said "they're all great chaps". and Keith claiming Led Zeppelin "never took off" is laughable. they took alright .. like the starship Enterprise in warp drive lol.
That's really nice to hear some good things from Mick about Led Zeppelin. I've watched an interview on UA-cam with Pete Townsend, and he has said he disliked them because they became so much bigger than The Who. So, that's clearly a jealousy element! I do think that Eric Clapton and Keith Richards' dislike stems from them being completely blues and rock n roll purists [as we're Zeppelin], but they were definitely the 'odd man out' in those circles, ie, The Who, The Stones, Cream, Floyd. I've always been slightly saddened by that outlook!
I knew Jagger liked Zepp but Richards no. I also know from inside information that both McCartney and Lennon had seen them several times early on and they were dumbstruck at how far rock music had advanced in just a few years.
Jagger and Page , two big legends , both pioneers . How many more times , and " Can't u hear me knocking ? --- are some of their greatest examples . Long live Page , and The Stones .
LED Zeppelin might of been Jimmy Pages band but you know it was the best rock band in the world they changed the sound of rock music and everyone wanted to be the Zeppelin guys one hell of living and music ever great career and fame
I am and have always been a big Zeppelin fan. I was a Page (and Beck) fan when he was with the Yardbirds. I saw them with my own band mates in 1970, and we were blown away. Zep 1 and 2 were released and 3 was ready for release… and we heard a few songs for the first time from their new album. I will say that concert was excellent, but every live performance since left me a little disappointed, not because of poor playing, but because the songs weren’t anything like the originals. However, that all changed when they played their 2012 Celebration Day. They more than made up for my disappointments when I watched that… over and over. Those studio albums are true works of art.
Mick is a very smart and media savvy person*, He knows that bashing Led Zeppelin is going to bring nothing but grief. I don't think he says negative things unless he has thought about it and their consequences. *Second only too Paul McCartney. That is a Man who understands that every moment, every sentence is there to be dissected by millions of people, ...for decades as it turns out.
From readling lots of books about this it appears a lot of the resentment was born out of jealousy toward the huge success of Zepplin vs. the longer established British bands. Concert wise Zepplin was out selling all the others by huge margins.
I don't completely agree that Mick was "framing" his praise for LZ in terms of Jimmy Page. He's a compulsive story teller (in the best sense) so, to talk about LZ, he tells a story - from inside the music business. I feel that if his story had started with how he first met Plant or Bonham, then he would have been as happy to take it from there. Loved the story, and loved hearing his genuine praise for LZ.
@@TalkLinkMusic-gd7fz You put an idea out there (Mick "framing" his praise for Zep in terms of Jimmy Page), which was plausible enough to be worth disagreeing with! 🙂
I remember watching a video on UA-cam of that huge Hydrogen Bomb being detonated in the sea. Rolling Stones, Who and everyone else, are the little ships surrounding it, that very quickly, become invisible.

Mick jagger or Robert plant? I think led zeppelin win hands down 😂 by the way physical graffiti pisses over anything the stones ever did😄
Envy is hell of the drug. All mentioned was in the top of the world these years and then came Led Zeppelin. Although mentioned had the best albums these years they become second league, and a lot of bands who heard Led Zeppelin I and II, become first league with Zeppelin on the top.
Jimmy was disliked by basically most guitar players, because he was called in to step on their toes with studio work in place of them so much. Jimmy is one of my all time favorites along with Mick Taylor and Jimi Hendrix
I could put up a poll for the best jazz combo in history and if I added Zep as a choice, they'd win. I could put up a poll for best kite fliers, they'd win. Best shoes, etc... lol They have an incredibly devoted and durable fan base of which I'm a member, if slightly less of a stan than some. 😎
I remember an interview where (I thought it was Mick but could have been Keith) they were criticizing Zeppelin for playing songs about fairies and pixies and such vs The Stones who sang about the real nitty gritty world.
All Hail The Mighty Led Zeppelin . . . they were the Perfect Storm = 4 incredible musicians, coming together. No Quarter, Achilles Last Stand, Kashmir, Black Dog, The Immigrant Song, Stairway to Heaven . . . shall I continue ? Greatest Rock Band of All Time. Ask the guys from Rush or the girls from Heart.
I love and adore LZ as a studio band-Page was brilliant in so many ways in that setting-composing,riff making, soloing, layering parts-but they were a completely different entity in a live setting and as time progressed Jimmy seemed to really struggle to execute his parts or solo with any clarity whatsoever. It was strange because there were times that he would be great,in short phases then completely fall off again. It was if he either didn’t take care of his health or didn’t prepare to play in any way, often. His studio solos on Stairway,10 years gone, black dog,and so many others tunes are so inspiring but for me,listening to him live was a real let down. Please please save all of the cliches about “soul” and “feel” vs chops and precision-it doesn’t apply in this case because most of one’s notes must come through clearly enough to communicate these emotions… Page is a genius,no doubt, and a great player I just wish he performed better live, that’s all!
There in only one kernel of information in this video, " LZ was too rough". What does that mean musically? Isn't rock supposed to be rough? Is this a compliment or a put down. Please explain.
Led Zep was an amazing band, when all is said and done. I do think they were slightly overrated live; kind of sloppy and Robert's voice was hit or miss in a live setting. But, they did have some magical moments live, made some fantastic studio albums with a lot of diversity, and rightfully are regarded as one of the most important bands ever.
I think Led Zeppelin's live performances were much better when their first album came out. Their live performance gradually got more self-indulgent and sloppier (mainly Page and Plant) as the band gained success. Jones and Bonham were pretty spot on all the time. ** Also critics recognized LZ borrowed or stole so many motifs including lyrics from blues artist and never credited their sources, putting their own names to the writing credit instead. LZ got away with that throughout their history. ***The Stones to their credit, always credit their sources on their albums.
To me, Led Zeppelin is infinitely greater than The Rolling Stones and The Beatles combined. The Rolling Stones and the Beatles together are barely a meadow hill, and Led Zeppelin is Mount Everest. The Beatles are revered because they were the first to start it. If they had appeared later, no one would have mentioned them today. And the Rolling Stones are just an example of good marketing throughout their existence. As I once said, whether Jimmy Page used black magic or not, in the rise of his band. Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock band until the end of the human genome and until the end of the void through which the universe continues to expand.
It's a shame the original Led Zeppelin stopped in 1980. And only in 2007 did they give a single reunion concert at the O2 Hall (they were so good there!) instead of going on tour again. John Bonham would certainly have said: “Keep on going!” His son and John Paul Jones would have deserved it. Page and Plant ok, but they only fill 20,000 capacity halls at most, not outdoor stadiums. If they went on tour with John P. Jones and J. Bonham's son as the reunion LED ZEPPELIN, they would mobilize all Zep fans and set a world record in every city which history has never seen. It's a shame that their fans can't experience something like that. Is there a manager with courage missing, or do they not have the courage themselves? It would be feasible. Why not? Until then, soft-pop musicians like Ed Sheran, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, etc. will fill stadiums worldwide like no rock band has ever managed, not even the Rolling Stones today. Many huge stadiums even on five days in a row..... I do not understand that. It's a strange world today.....
Both Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix were my idols when learning to play guitar. Led Zeppelin loomed large in my teens and were my favourite band until I saw Judas Priest live at Hammersmith Odeon in London, UK the night they released "Stained Class." That gig changed my life forever. I've seen many bands live and saw Priest again in North America a few years back, I think around 2015-17 time (please excuse me my latter memory is not as good as my long term memory). Th Priest gig in 1978 was and still remains the best live performance I have ever heard or seen. I know it's subjective, but the only band that came close to approximating the 78 Priest gig is Rush, whom I saw play at the same venue in 1979.
I notice that Mic Jagger, Paul McCartney both are very cool guys, they do not feel the need to put down others in music. Two of the biggest rock and roll idols of the 1960s who continue to gain more and more fans until this very day. No need to criticize and put down others when you are so popular and so respected in music like Jagger and McCartney are. Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page are loved by so many people. I am sorry, but you simply come off as being jealous when these rock stars like Clapton and Richards and Townshend put down Page and Led Zeppelin.
@@thekitowl You are right. The song is about how good it feels to be at a rock show, and McCartney purposefully mentioned Jimmy Page in his song. y'know the photo w/ Watts and a jackass hauling guitars, and them having a show called ROCK & ROLL CIRCUS, well probably because of that stuff, I used to tell people that they were as close to a Circus as a Rock band could get, and that they'd be around as long as the Barnum & Bailey/Ringling Bros. Circus . well on that second part I was more right than I expected to be. they have been a travelling show since the early to mid-'60's.

They are better than ever too! I've been watching a lot ov vids from their latest tour.
Thanks Mick you are honest and have enough self confidence to be so
Jagger was always open to new music
Led was the BEST❤❤❤❤❤
Robert Plant's voice in his prime was incredible, nobody even comes close.
His voice went in ‘73
Plant’s voice technically better than Mick’s but Jagger is “pure raw “ and consequently the best r’n’r singer out there.
Go to an opera.
Ever heard of Freddie Mercury?
All in the ear of the beholder. To me Steven Tyler is much better than Jagger.
Keith always praises Page's playing
And Jones. But he didn't think much of Bonham or Plant it seems. He thought the vocals were over the top and the drumming was one dimensional according to the interview I saw.

Without a doubt Led Zeppelin the best band of all time!!🎸👏👏👏
I was fortunate enough to see the Page and Plant tour back in the late 90's I guess.
@@DanEvans-yb6wk Plant always talks highly of members in his bands, him & Page always respect all musicians, never say unkind things like some others do.

He had a vision but it all changed after he heard John Bonhams heavy hitting....facts 👍👍
Paul McCartney, Roger Daltrey, John Lennon, Charlie Watts etc all said good things about Zeppelin. Watts even said the Stones had to step up their game and not rest on their laurels when Zeppelin came out and played 2 1/2 to 3 hour concerts.
Two thumbs up, way up. to The Yardbirds, including Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton.
Well said! 👍
❤❤❤Robert has the best and otherworldly vocals❤❤❤he put the sexy in rock and roll❤❤❤
@@Paul-fg6mk
Lol ..what?!
@@DianeLake-sw3ym I really doubt Keith is jealous of anyone except perhaps his blues heros, muddy, wolf, berry,…

And, they actually knew Zeppelin and you didn’t. You’re just a commoner with an opinion.

Thanks Mick for that. At least someone realizes that there is more than the Beatles, Stones, or the Who. BEAUTIFUL
the reason Pete Townshend doesn't like Led Zeppelin is simple and on record. they became bigger than The Who.
Yup, that's exactly what Pete said. At least he's honest!
the only competition playing guitar from the Stones was from Mick Taylor.
Steve Marriott, as a lead singer, would have worked in the early days. It v Took me a while to find him. Humble Pie? Jpj. so good.
Pagey tried to get him. Legal and mob snags, I think.
I knew Jagger liked Zepp but Richards no. I also know from inside information that both McCartney and Lennon had seen them several times early on and they were dumbstruck at how far rock music had advanced in just a few years.
Mick knows what's up.

Great post!
But Led Zeppelin has been gone for 44 years.
From readling lots of books about this it appears a lot of the resentment was born out of jealousy toward the huge success of Zepplin vs. the longer established British bands. Concert wise Zepplin was out selling all the others by huge margins.
What matters is LZ sold more albums than any of the aforementioned bands during their run!

Each of the four members of Led Zeppelin are better at their craft than any member of the Stones. Richard’s can’t hold a candle to Page.
Please please save all of the cliches about “soul” and “feel” vs chops and precision-it doesn’t apply in this case because most of one’s notes must come through clearly enough to communicate these emotions…

Keith Richards must have been very high to say Zeppelin"never took"off!lol.
It's pathetic to see all those jealous guitarists diss Led Zeppelin.
I guess we're the lucky ones. We get to love all these bands.
I.agree. Led Zeppelin is awesome love Zeppelin
Correct!!!😮
Jagger is smart. He knows there isn't any benefit is slamming a contemporary.
Paul even name checks Page in his song Rock Show.
@@thekitowl You are right. The song is about how good it feels to be at a rock show, and McCartney purposefully mentioned Jimmy Page in his song. Seeing a man moving an amplifier across the stage resembling the one used by Jimmy Page at a rock show.
