    • @mapleleafesl6162

      Hi Andrea Giraldo MD. When with the past perfect, that structure is often used to express what one wished had happened in the past but didn't. For instance, "I had hoped you would call me last night to go for a drink, but unfortunately you didn't". With 'hoped' and 'was hoping', it is often for a present request: "I was hoping you would help me with my homework, if that's all right with you".

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  6 років тому

      Hi Olegman Po, an infinitive ('to' + base verb, i.e. to go, to do, etc) usually follows hope. So "I hope to see you next weekend" or "I hope to go on vacation next month" are good sentences. However, we cannot place an object in the middle and follow it with 'to' so your sentence above is incorrect. Instead, you could say, "I hope they arrive soon."

    You have a nice way of explaining a complicated items by simple and understandable examples. Thank you for sharing your magic with people who want to learn English, but cannot afford some fancy schools, we really appreciate that. Yet, I am still confused... as you said we use WISH to express a desire that is mostly impossible or not even likely to happen. But we all say "I wish you good luck", "I wish you a Marry Christmas".... So, if I tell a person who speaks English as a native language and understands the reasons of using WISH instead of HOPE - "I WISH YOU A SPEEDY RECOVERY", does it mean that I am actually saying "REST IN PEACE" as far as his chances to recover are a joke? I guess there are some exceptions? Could you drop a line? I am not kidding, no way. I really want to know. (FROM RUSSIA WIHT LOVE).

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  5 років тому +1

      In your example 'I wish you a speedy recovery' I can't actually grant you that wish (but I wish I could) which is why it would be considered unrealistic. It doesn't AT ALL mean that I think it won't happen it's just that I, personally, can't make it happen.

    Andrew what´s the difference between "I wish to be with you" and "I wish I were with you" ?

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  6 років тому +2

      Basically one is real and one is unreal, but in this case, they have very similar meanings. "I wish to be with you" is a real statement and is something I desire. It (possibly) sounds romantic and is stating that I desire to be with you. "I wish I were with you" is unreal so it is like I am imagining I could be with you but the reality is I can't. For instance, if two people were in different countries, it would be impossible for them to physically be together so one person might say "I wish I were with you" to state their (impossible) desire. Hope this helps.

    If we can use "wish" with to infinitive to say something in imperative command. Then what's the difference with need and want? Like, there's something wrong with your service and I want/need to speak to your manager to complain.

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  5 років тому +1

      In your sentence above, 'I want/need/wish to speak to your manager to make a complaint' would all be correct and would have the same meaning. However, in this case, I would consider 'wish' the most polite choice of the three. Thanks for the great question.

    What about "we wish you a Merry Christmas"? Does it mean the Merry Christmas not likely to happen😁?

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  5 років тому +1

      No, it doesn't. You'll notice in that phrase that there is no other verb following 'wish' or anywhere else in the sentence.

      @mapleleafesl6162  4 роки тому

      This is wish with verbs. Your sentences above are noun phrases. (I wish + noun/noun phrase)

    Then, why we say i wish bla bla bla when we are in birthday after blow the candle, we expect that our wishes will happen. But why wish? Or this is just the way they use it or there is something that this video dont explain about that??

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  5 років тому +2

      In the case of happy birthday, we don't use a verb. Usually it's just 'make a wish' or 'I wish you a happy birthday'.

  • @nawarnawar5822

    Hi Andrew. You haven't mentioned an important point about wish
    For example
    I wish you a happy life
    Here, we use wish to talk about future don't we?

    I wish you a successful new store grand opening or I hope you will have a successful new store grand opening. Are they both correct? BTW, thanks for the useful video👍👏

    • @mapleleafesl6162
      @mapleleafesl6162  6 років тому

      The best way to say that would be: I hope you have a successful store grand opening. Your first sentence is good, but the second one doesn't need 'will'.

    Dear teacher, your lessons are good, but you should get rid of the word "OK". You use it too often and it distract attention. Try to count and you will be impressed).
