Oh my gosh!!! Thanks for everything you've been doing for us I've been learning more from you,i wish the whole Africa were united i mean one currency, one government, one président by the way as our African Learders are fighting for our freedom all is gonna be great 👍
Dear Prof, I was wondering if I might dare to ask you a question? In which situation could I use this formula: Subj+ hoped /was hoping/ had hoped + Subj + would + bare infinitive? Many thanks. A
Hi Andrea Giraldo MD. When with the past perfect, that structure is often used to express what one wished had happened in the past but didn't. For instance, "I had hoped you would call me last night to go for a drink, but unfortunately you didn't". With 'hoped' and 'was hoping', it is often for a present request: "I was hoping you would help me with my homework, if that's all right with you".
Exactely teacher but i think we r talking about future. I wanted to say that can we use present simple like * i hope + preset simple.* to talk about present . Aslo thanks
Hello, great video, but I have a question. It's about this sentence: I wish I wasn't at work. I read that sentence...... But I'm still wondering if this form is correct. In my opinion I think it should be: "I whish I weren't at work", but I'm not sure. Could you help me with my question, please? Greetings from South America
Hi Olegman Po, an infinitive ('to' + base verb, i.e. to go, to do, etc) usually follows hope. So "I hope to see you next weekend" or "I hope to go on vacation next month" are good sentences. However, we cannot place an object in the middle and follow it with 'to' so your sentence above is incorrect. Instead, you could say, "I hope they arrive soon."
You have a nice way of explaining a complicated items by simple and understandable examples. Thank you for sharing your magic with people who want to learn English, but cannot afford some fancy schools, we really appreciate that. Yet, I am still confused... as you said we use WISH to express a desire that is mostly impossible or not even likely to happen. But we all say "I wish you good luck", "I wish you a Marry Christmas".... So, if I tell a person who speaks English as a native language and understands the reasons of using WISH instead of HOPE - "I WISH YOU A SPEEDY RECOVERY", does it mean that I am actually saying "REST IN PEACE" as far as his chances to recover are a joke? I guess there are some exceptions? Could you drop a line? I am not kidding, no way. I really want to know. (FROM RUSSIA WIHT LOVE).
In your example 'I wish you a speedy recovery' I can't actually grant you that wish (but I wish I could) which is why it would be considered unrealistic. It doesn't AT ALL mean that I think it won't happen it's just that I, personally, can't make it happen.
Basically one is real and one is unreal, but in this case, they have very similar meanings. "I wish to be with you" is a real statement and is something I desire. It (possibly) sounds romantic and is stating that I desire to be with you. "I wish I were with you" is unreal so it is like I am imagining I could be with you but the reality is I can't. For instance, if two people were in different countries, it would be impossible for them to physically be together so one person might say "I wish I were with you" to state their (impossible) desire. Hope this helps.
If we can use "wish" with to infinitive to say something in imperative command. Then what's the difference with need and want? Like, there's something wrong with your service and I want/need to speak to your manager to complain.
In your sentence above, 'I want/need/wish to speak to your manager to make a complaint' would all be correct and would have the same meaning. However, in this case, I would consider 'wish' the most polite choice of the three. Thanks for the great question.

The best way to say that would be: I hope you have a successful store grand opening. Your first sentence is good, but the second one doesn't need 'will'.

Greetings from South America
In speaking, I would definitely say: I wish I wasn't at work.
I have a question:
Which is correct "I hope you like the cake I made" or "I hope you to like the cake I made" ????
The first one.
Well done, Andrew! Can I use "to" after hope? Like "expect to". For instance: We hope them to arrive soon
