The silver coins mentioned around 1:22 were known by the british as pieces of 8 after their native spanish name "Real de a 8" or Spanish dollar, which was the first international currency, being minted since 1497 it was the coin upon which the original United States dollar was based, and it remained legal tender in the USA until the Coinage Act of 1857. Some experts argue that the "$" symbol is a simpified version of the columns and stripe that appear on one side of the Spanish dollar and are present to this day on the Spanish coat of arms, as well as the Spanish flag. The columns represent the pillars of Hercules and the ribbon that goes through them reads "Plus Ultra" latin for beyond, in reference to the existence of landmasses beyond the old world (i.e. The New World, currently known as The Americas). Many other currencies around the world were initially based on the Spanish dollar and other 8-real coins as well, like the chinese yuan, the japanese yen and the variety of pesos throughout Hispanic America.
Now Britain is all alone. The sun has finally set on this empire. Now it’s so poor, I’ve heard that there’s hardly any fruits or veggies in their supermarkets...most shelves are empty....
The First Opium War, the Second Opium War, the Eight-Nation Alliance invaded China, set Yuanmingyuan on fire, and the Japanese war of aggression against China...... The modern history of China is the history of Chinese people's blood and tears. During our middle school years, studying modern Chinese history was the most painful. China's century of humiliation has deeply engraved the concept of "falling behind means being beaten" in the hearts of every Chinese person. Therefore, the Chinese people strive to catch up, in order to prevent people from being oppressed and bullied by others.

If it were really like what you said, China would have been in chaos long ago
@@Rowlph8888 The Qing Dynasty was ruled by the Manchus, but after the Manchus controlled the Central Plains, they declared themselves to be the orthodox faction of China. The Qing government continued to use the traditional Confucian culture of the Han Chinese in terms of writing, administrative management, and culture, which can be said to have completely sinicized the Manchus. The Qing Dynasty also regarded itself as China to the outside world. Chinese culture has always been a culture that embraces all rivers and is inclusive. The ethnic groups around the Han ethnic group have basically been sinicized. You can see that there are 56 ethnic groups in China today, with the Han ethnic group being the main ethnic group, and most of the 55 ethnic minorities have already been sinicized. This is the true charm of Chinese culture, which encompasses everything. Foreigners find it difficult to understand this point, unless they learn Chinese and conduct in-depth research, otherwise it is difficult to understand the spirit of Chinese culture.
The various Sino rebellions of the 1850s-1870s. A series would be a welcome project. Consisting of The Taiping Rebellion (1850-1871), The Nian Rebellion (1853-1868), The Red Turban Rebellion (1854-1856), The Miao Rebellion (1854-1873), The Panthay Rebellion (1855-1873), The Dungan Revolt (1862-1877). All contributed to the fall of the Qing, all are events many westerners are ignorant towards. I believe this would be a worthwhile series due to very few videos being about them. They illustrate the circumstances of why The Qing were so vulnerable and collapsed. Thanks for considering and for asking for the suggestion. Cheers

They wanna to portray themselves as a constant wining power that collapsed an foreign empire in order to justify their internal need for a sense of western superiority of some sort.
Because the domination system of the Qing dynasty was ultimately non-Legitimacy against 430 million Han Chinese became forcibly oppressed. They invaded mainland china 400 years ago after opening the gate of Shanhai Pass with collaborating Han traitor(Wu Sangui). I think the main cause of decline is the Chinese civil war. Especially the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom movement, which occurred in the most economically developed regions of China, resulted in the death of tens of millions of people. These led to the rapid collapse of the Qing Dynasty. Especially when Japan took advantage of the turmoil of the Qing Dynasty to launch the Sino Japanese War, it completely destroyed the Qing Dynasty in name only.

It was highly effective and treated the stock market crashed effects, the demands of the qing empire was reasonable but the allies who were all suffering from the crash basically wanted any excuse to fuck over china for the silver they invested. Having been the first country to industrialise, Britain had a technological advantage over the rest of the world. The more the rest of the world industrialised as well, the harder it became for Britain to retain its role of global hegemon. Britain has yet to come to grips with its much reduced importance, and with the blunder its political leaders have created since the dissolution of the empire.
It's got more to do with the mismanagement of relations with the growing nation of Germany in the lead up to the world wars, then the effect of those wars, than others catching up industrially. By the start of World War I USA was already producing more industrial output than Britain, but Britain was always going to be able to stay far ahead in money gained from trade, military power and because USA was heavily in debt to them. Independent studies show that it's likely that without the 2 world wars, Britain would still be militarily the most powerful country in the world, right now, but not by much and the USA would have been gradually making inroads over the century and the ascendance of the USA would eventually be inevitable. In our timeline, the US benefited from Staying out of the wars and being the only country that was actually growing stronger economically, whilst everyone else was dramatically getting weaker. Before the First World War United States was massively indebted to the Brits, for borrowing in order to develop its economy througghout the previous century. The wars massively Swapped the imbalance in the opposite direction. *Added to this was the US having the safety and time to develop the atomic bomb, which then became a massive threat and a deterrent, so the takeover was immediate. *The British Empire had tied up most trade routes in Britain's favour and gave Britain' Strategic advantage all over the globe in terms of reconnaissance, storing of military gear and presence in tactically beneficial areas, if attacked. These facets lways dramatically improve their circumstances compared to any nation, even with a vastly more numerous army or navy, which the US was obviously going to develop over the course of the mos20th century, if the world wars did not happen and the changes in our timeline didn't happen
That’s not true actually Britain maintains a major edge in technology over basically everyone and in economics. Even during the early 20th century Britain was economically and politically more important the literally everyone. Even today that still remains.

Europe had technological supremacy and China closed themselves off to foreign ideas. They had the attitude "we have everything we need, we don't need your barbarian ideas and products, China is the best and everyone else should kowtow to our emperor" (see: "Emperor Qian Long's Letter to King George III, 1793"). by this time, the technological gap and the gap in military doctrine was HUGE. Just compare the ships on both sides. That's the best, most spectecular way to see this. China was many many decades (I say more than a century) behind the West. Plus, the West were colonial powers with a lot of combat experience on every level of their military forces.

The use of opium in China at the time has variously been estimated at 0.01%, to 5% and even 10% of the population. Interstingly, this compares with the use of illicit drugs in the US, which stood at 13 % of the overall population in 2019, and at around 60% of ages between 17 and 40.
USA did it to themselves. China dont sell them any drugs. Mexican cartels buy the base chemicals from China and made fentanyl and sell it to USA. These base chemicals can be used for a lot of legit use.
One time usage and addiction are entirely different. Marijuana and opium are very different in addicting power. Now if you take cocain/heroin (or worse) statistics, I really doubt it rises to these levels in the US.
So why was the UK able to defeat a foe with greater numbers, especially in the 1st Opium War? 1. The UK had a very well trained and professional military, the Chinese were mostly peasant conscripts who primarily fought against bandits. 2. The UK was better equipped, while China was the birthplace of gun powder, most Chinese soldiers at that point were equipped with either spears or bows and the ones who had guns had old matchlock muskets. To put it bluntly: The Chinese brought knives to a gun fight. 3. The UK also had better equipped ships as their ships were both steam powered and iron clad,in the war's 1st big naval action, the Royal Navy managed to destroy an opposing island's defenses in just 9 minutes. 4. You have the arrogance of the Chinese who thought all foreigners were barbarians destined to live under Chinese rule. By the way,it was also how the Japanese were able to defeat the Russians in the 1904/1905 Russo-Japanese War,see even though the Russians had an edge in numbers, the Japanese were better trained and equipped

To put it bluntly:
The Chinese brought knives to a gun fight.
3. The UK also had better equipped ships as their ships were both steam powered and iron clad,in the war's 1st big naval action, the Royal Navy managed to destroy an opposing island's defenses in just 9 minutes.

As the west did with opium, so the Chinese do now with TikTok :) the best thing is they don't need to manufacture content in India, the "influencers" do it for free.
Lol if this were some grand conspiracy theory, you’d better shut it before more ridiculous shit pop out. As far as I can see, the bullshits on TikTok and the regular okay stuff, literally are just the generic reflection of its users and the internet as a whole. It is just how they want to show like Iran version of Central Asian history while some crucial details were incorrect, because the Central Asian historians are not active. Most Indian and world today blame Britain for colonization but instead they should blame thier kings who instead of fighting brits, made treaties where they were made millions in pension for stepping aside and letting Britain rule
Britain's current strength is too weak! China can kill Britain with money!
You say this, but ultimately reckonings from the past are not implemented purely emotionally, we know that from history. A Multitude of Cultures have done heinous things, but there future generations have not been made accountable. I've seen videos in China from many different cities on topics such as "is there a country you hate.", Or which country… and the Chinese, never mention UK even once, from any generation. They occasionally mention "Japan", amongst the older and new generation due to not recognising Japanese war crimes.
Most nationstates elites are ultimately only interested in what happens to their own profits, and we've seen this throughout history. They care as little about their own people as they do about other countries people.Patriotism, is purely a ploy to invigorate the masses, if they need to act at any point, just a technique essentially.
The Chinese elites will focus on what makes them money 1st and then the general economy 2nd, because they are dependent on their economy for generating their wealth.
@@marshalLannes1769 that's just putting the blame on the colonized, when it's not the case. Regardless of what was the internal situation in India, the British had nothing to do in China roleplaying as drug cartels
So this is what the Chinese were talking about "Century of Humiliation". They have learnt the lesson and are now ready to take back their pride. Good for them.
This resonates with me pretty well as I know someone who died of heroin overdose.
Around 6:00 about when the British attempted to negotiate under white flag but were fired upon, I wonder if that could have been a cultural misunderstanding. I don't know much about Chinese culture, but I know that the color white is mostly associated with death throughout Asia, and they might not have known (at least one or more of the people in charge at that place and at that time didn't, for whatever reason) that they were coming in under a flag of diplomacy and negotiation.
If anyone knows more about this I'd love to hear it! Also thanks for a great video!
The practice of raising a white flag as a sign of surrender is recorded in ancient Chinese and Roman history. It is believed to have originated during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD).
So when British try to talk about human rights with Chinese, just think about the what they done to Chinese. shame on them
Think about what the Chinese do to the Chinese.
Indians don't do any protest, strike or defend their nation just workers even now, except Maratha Empire could have defended British in wars unlike chinese who had Mongol Empire which has defended the British and creators now with global trade
