So many memories. Saw the Smithfield Plains Shops and was just how I remember it. The local shops were all so good and it’s a shame how derelict they all look now 😢
Yes, it's pretty wild to see how quickly all those original visions ended up being abandoned. It could easily be turned around if the will was there in our local leaders, but alas...
...and of course, the will really needs to be there at the community level also. Many who remember have moved away while there is no emotional connection to this period for those too young to remember. So we are a minority who would like to see some history preserved - hence this channel. Thank you for supporting it, it's much appreciated 🙏❤️
Just spotted my mum and younger sister at Elizabeth South shops opening day, November 1958, @ 5:30. Don't have many family photos from around this time. The Box Brownie must have been in for repairs or replacement. How can I get a copy of this photo?
Awesome stevo53. You can find that photo on the Playford's Past Recollect website here: playfordspast.recollect.net.au/nodes/view/2827?keywords=Elizabeth%20South&type=all&highlights=WyJlbGl6YWJldGgiLCJzb3V0aCwiLCJzb3V0aCJd
wow,, 315.. the grove shops ,almost the same when i moved here in 1979.. my teenage stomping ground ..10yo on a Dragster push bike to an 18yo with a HG panel van.. the storys i could tell about growing up here and the friends we made at those shops . people that knock Elizabeth never lived here ....
Yeah mate; it's easy to judge from the outside isn't it? I had some very tough times in Elizabeth but I wouldn't trade it for anything. My connection to Elizabeth, the land and the people remain strong no matter where I go. There are times when I'm there I get quite emotional. There's no place like it. 🙏

Beautiful - you will remember how different a world it was back then. I was born in 1970, so exploring Elizabeth from its inception to 1970 often feels like studying someone else's town. Thank you for watching, and sharing - I love hearing from Elizabeth 'Originals'.
Elizabeth will always be my home, I made the closest friends there and found my beautiful wife there, it will be my home even if I'm not there, I will return one day.
Hey Andrew. Thank you for sharing with us. Always glad to hear positive comments and happy memories of living and growing up in the Elizabeth that was. Cheers, mate
Hey Lostgirl666, thank you for watching. Yes, it was a very different town in the beginning. Those first 15 years especially are like studying someone else's town. It's pretty wild how rapidly it all changed.
A very different place back then my friend. I was born in 1970, I have pretty vague memories of walking passed the old Pool Hall at the centre back then. Johnnies of course, the Skating Rink on Elizabeth Way etc.
@@elizabeththatwas I first saw it in 1967 on my first stay in Australia. My father was stationed at WRE. We stayed fir a few years. Moved to Singapore and immigrated to Australia in 1971. We lived near what is now the funeral place near the corner of Woma Road. I went to Elizabeth High School. I did a brown eye at the Queen as she drove past the school in 1977. Many of us “New Australians” don’t respect the monarchy. I wonder if anybody out there remembers the Queen driving past the school. Teachers and police flattened me very quickly, but I maintain that HRH glimpsed my pert, white teenage buttocks. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🇦🇺

Yes, it's pretty wild how much has come and gone in such a short space of time, and how far off the mark things went from Thomas Playford's original intentions.
@@elizabeththatwas Yep.... And it has been all the good things taken away... the wide open malls of the Town Centre, the squash courts, the skating rink, the Octagon... now the Octagon... though modern should have become a locally listed heritage asset....
