The second half of the album, "The Ninth Wave," is a suite/song cycle that should be listened to as a whole piece. Highly recommend that you listen to it as such.

A live performance of "The Ninth Wave" was part of Kate's 2014 "Before The Dawn" concerts, for the 1st track of the suite "And Dream of Sheep" a recording was made of Kate performing live floating in a huge tank of cold water. The video of this performance was projected onto a large screen, then the rest of "The Ninth Wave" was performed live on the stage and is available to view on Kate's official UA-cam channel.

Yes, he should absolutely listen to the whole "Ninth wave" which is the whole second half of the album, a story of her drowning from a ship that sunk...every song on Ninth Wave is epic.

New to your channel and massive Kate Bush fan. To give you an idea of how huge Kate is, consider this - John Lennon was a fan. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) called her a genius. Elton John spoke of her as being a once in a lifetime talent. Prince called her his favourite woman. David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) has spoken of her as being completely unique in all of popular music, unlike anyone else before or after her. Tupac was a fan, as is Big Boi (OutKast). Bjork has spoken on a number of occasions of the impact Kate Bush had on her. Dusty Springfield spoke about being staggered at her talent. Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders) described as a person with what she called a 'perfect voice.' Patti Smith called her a 'UFO' in terms of her intrusion into and impact on the ordinary everyday music.

So glad you liked this track. A few points, the sample at the beginning "It's In the trees, it's coming" was taken from the 1957 British Horror film "Night of the Demon", Kate is a Horror and she has said it's one of her favourite films. Regarding the official music video Kate directed it herself. This album was the 2nd album (her 5th studio albm) where Kate was solely in charge of production. Kate was credited as a co-producer on her 3rd studio album "Never For Ever" and then "The Dreaming" was the first album that Kate produced herself, the result is best described as being an "out there" experimental album, I'm not sure that you would be ready for that yet 😀, so for now just continue with your dive into the "Hounds Of Love" album because it's certainly an iconic album.

Strongly recommend you listen to the whole of the Ninth Wave in one go, beginning with ‘And Dream of Sheep’. You can then edit into individual reactions if that’s how you want to go. These songs were not written to be listened to outside the context of the 7-song narrative. Best also to understand that this is about a woman marooned at sea with just a life jacket on (with its little emergency light shining) waiting to be rescued and fearful of falling asleep and drowning. The narrative then progresses through dreams, hallucinations and out of body experiences before (well, you can make up your own mind whether she lived or died).

So glad you're doing this album. It's genius. the first "side" are all really strong songs. The second "Side", called, by itself, The Ninth Wave, tells the story of a woman spending the night in the water trying to stay awake. It's really powerful. Looking forward to watching you experience the rest of this glorious album.

There's no gender in The 9th Wave: 'It's the idea of this person being in the water, how they've got there, we don't know. But the idea is that they've been on a ship and they've been washed over the side so they're alone in this water.' And Dream of Sheep makes me think of some RAF pilot, drifting in the Channel in WW2, waiting for Dawn and rescue

The A side had the most commercial songs, the big hit singles lifted off the album, plus the angelic 'Mother stands for comfort' . The album B side is best described as a suite of tracks, which should really be experienced as one continual concept piece that has an arcing themes. It is experimental and atmospheric and fits more in the progressive rock category, but really, as you are slowly discovering and acclimatising to Kate, she really is in a category of her own. She's long been a national treasure in the UK, but only recently become a phenomenon in the US, she was never really ambitious enough to want to promote her music in the States. She truly is an all round artist to the core, and through overwhelming talent, and masses of feminine charm, she has succeeded in doing things her way, with total artistic control. Once you have reacted to the music, (and I don't say this about many artist) check out her promo videos which are also very creative, bewitching and elegantly charming.

I am really glad you are featuring Kate Bush. I know that she is much admired and a very unique talent. However, the first time I heard heard her - it was Wuthering Heights - I hated it! So, I never listened to her again. So, now I will listen to all of her album and perhaps learn to love her as others do. That's why albums are great, you can really immerse yourself, thanks...

I had first heard Pat Benatar's cover version of Wuthering Heights, and thought what the heck when I heard Kate Bush's version. Since Wuthering Heights is my favorite book I wanted to hear Kate Bush's version, so I bought a CD with her greatest hits. Since I had bought the CD I listened to it and the more I listened the more I liked it.

@@bangmon1000 I believe it was you who recommended I listen to Wuthering Heights - LOL. I thought it was really weird. Like I said, I am more than willing to give her a second chance. I have written off too many artists based on one song, only to hear other songs and finding I really do like them. I am going to be open minded.
This is why I love Chod's channel - he gives me the opportunity to listen to music I am not familiar with.

@@bangmon1000 Just so you know, Kate recorded a new version of Wuthering Heights for her greatest hits album ("The Whole Story"). I think she was not quite satisfied with the reputation of the original version, and she wanted to give it another go as a more seasoned vocalist. In my opinion, the greatest hits version is much better than the original.

@@cindyfalstrom7231 I too wrote off Kate Bush at first, because the only songs I had heard were the weird ones: Wuthering Heights, Babooshka, and maybe one other. So I was aware of her, but did not listen to her music. So one day my sister gifted me the greatest hits album, and I was immediately struck by how beautiful the songs were. Right then I became a huge fan, and I bought all of her back catalog and her then-current album The Sensual World. After a lifetime of not "connecting" with any music, Kate Bush became the first artist whose music did that for me. (What can I say, I was a late bloomer.)
