  • Cast iron grill pans are one way to cook food outdoors or indoors. However, they can be a little tricky to clean. In this video, Mr. Cast Iron shows you how to wash and clean a Lodge cast iron grill pan so that it's like new again!
    A grill pan is a skillet with ridges. Sometimes food gets stuck after cooking on cast iron. Cleaning can best be done immediately after cooking while the skillet is hot, but sometimes that is not possible to do. Not to fear because we can still clean our cast iron grill pan!!

    I haven’t really used cast iron much before. This morning I was making some breakfast burritos. After I got the eggs, cheese and everything else wrapped up in the tortillas, I needed to “toast” the burritos on both sides to give it a little crunch and melt the cheese. I remembered I had an old cast iron griddle (round and flat with a little lip on the edge, doesn’t have ridges) that belonged to my grandmother. Oh man, it worked beautiful! I’ve never been able to get tortillas to brown like that on an aluminum skillet. Only issue was some cheese spilled out and got stuck on the griddle. There is just enough lip on the griddle (maybe 1/4”) that I was able to pour in just enough water to cover the cheese. Turned the gas back on, let it boil, and the cheese came right off with just a little nylon scrub brush. So now I’m going to have to try doing so more cooking with cast iron.
    Now unrelated to that story - last week I was going through some drawers in the kitchen and found plastic thing with the notches like you showed for cleaning your grill pan. It didn’t have any writing on it and I said “what in the heck is this thing for?” I knew it came with something but I couldn’t remember what, or what it was used for. Mystery Solved!

      @@MrCastIron here’s a burrito tip in case you or others don’t already know it. When you’re rolling up the tortilla and trying to get it to stay closed, mix up a little flour & water OR corn starch & water and dab a little bit of that on the inside of the “flap” of the burrito. Place that side down first on the skillet and then your burrito won’t come unwrapped. Saw that recently on a young lady’s UA-cam channel. Take care!

    I use the heating method for most of my tough jobs, followed by scrubbing with hot water and a nylon pad, followed by a small drop of dishsoap and warm water, followed by a rinse, followed by a heating to dry all surfaces. Seems to work (I always forget the oil at the end).

    • @MrCastIron

    The cooling helps suck microscopic amounts of the oil into the pores.

    So I recently bought a lodge and im already making rookie mistakes. Not oiling, and using to high heat. Because of this, it left burnt marks that I cant get off. I bought that chain scrub but i think i scrubbed too hard😭 and i can see my scrub marks.. am i doomed?

    • @MrCastIron
      @MrCastIron  Рік тому +1

      No, you are not doomed! You can fix it by cooking some 73/27 or 80/20 hamburger meat. I would only use the chainmail if I had something that would not come off any other way and then only lightly. Typically after cooking, take a paper towel and wipe out the excess grease. Add some water and heat it in the skillet and wash it out. Use a soft bristle brush to scrub any bits that need a little extra persuasion. Let me know how it turns out, ok!!??

    • @MrCastIron
      @MrCastIron  Рік тому +1

      I hate that it happened to you, but it can be fixed. Wash it really good but don’t add any more oil. Place it upside down in a 450 to a 500-degree oven and bake it for an hour to an hour and a half. Turn the oven off and let it cool down completely. Usually, overnight is fine. See if this helps, and let me know how it works out for you, ok!?
