An excellent follow up to these videos would be a video of the field striping of the weapon so that we can follow along as Karl and Ian find the places the mud went that prevented the weapon from operating (or in the case of weapons that passed where didn't the mud go and what prevented it from finding a spot that would make the weapon fail).

@@jochenheiden Other than the gas system, the G43 shares almost nothing SVT. The SVT is tilting bolt, the G43 is flapper locked, their fire control groups are different, etc.
Just like you guys said with the AK, it has all that open space for mud to go during firing. I predicted that it would be 1 shot before clicking play on the video based on your finds in a previous video haha
You know, I was reading in the book “Sturmgewehr!” back when it had just came out, and you were doing that big round of mud testing, that the German evaluators sent a quantity of guns to Greece for mud testing. I don’t recall what was the outcome, but it’s interesting that this was done. Odd that they sent the guns to Greece. I sure don’t anticipate that series of rifles ever being mud tested by even you gentlemen, as intrepid a pair of evaluators as you are!

They did the SMLE, Arisaka Type 38, K98k, Mosin, and M1 Garand as well as the SKS and M14 SMLE, M14 and M1 failed in one round, K98k kept running for a while before it succumbed when re-mudded, and the Arisaka kept running thanks to its dust cover. Mosin kept running, although Ian had to bash the bolt handle against the wheelbarrow to get it unlocked because once mudded no mortal palm strength was able to unlock it. SKS ran fine the first few rounds but after that the ejector was so mudded it FTE'd with every shot.
This is even more intense when coming home from the bar hammered. It really disappointed me how miserable the result was. Greetings from Austria to all of you Americans!

Jochen Heiden as I said I don’t think it would either. Maybe it would be exposed for less time keeping debris from getting in comparatively, the locking system is so complicated it doesn’t take much at all to jam it, I was just curious more than anything.
I'm surprise you guys don't do an After action autopsy/cleaning review of what cause said failure. Mud/rock in locking recesses, dirty magazine, hammer or sears covered in mud, etc.

Would be interesting to see how one of the earlier production ones with the "automatic" dust cover would fair in this test. It should theoretically do better, if it was debris that entered behind the sliding bolt that caused the malfunction.
A few months ago Ian shrugged a comment of mine off, suggesting to mud test an original FG-42... he and you might still do this, but i see the trajectory here ;-)
Well the G43 was kinda a rush job to get out something that is better than the G41 to the troops, and that was not raising the bar wery high there. And it still works as well as the M1 Garand that had a longer development time.

I believe we can hardly get a gun which could pass even from more recent times let alone ww2 era. Probably some bolt action maybe? The svt 40 would fail too.
interesting... the early semiauto rifles are not good with the mud. Are the early SMGs any better? I doubt it with the open bolt design. But, the grease gun with its dust cover may survive?
You should put a chest high muddy water pit on a 2 gun course you have to wade through trying to keep your gun out of it. Considering the desert you could just simulate the water by making them push through foam obstructions and if the rifle drops below the "water level" it's an assumed stoppage time penalty. So rifle safely on table, simulated rifle above head as you wade through. I did just watch a video of a friends kid at skyzone so that may be affecting my train of thought.

It might do okay, but there's that recess on the side of the SVT bolt where mud and gunk would probably get into the mechanism.

If you can try to mudtest all the major rifles from every nation that would be cool like svt,arisaka,Enfield,mosin and some others im missing probably
