- Sad news - On September 25, 2022, Eugene Fytche peacefully passed away. I was fortunate to know Eugene. We produced this video together. He was a delight to be around. Eugene was always creating something to help others such as this video.
He wrote books such as 'Good Neighbours Make Good Fences' & '400 Years of Log Fences'. He also created a picture book for those with dementia - 'A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words'. Eugene's last book, 'Back to the Country' is a guide for those who dream of leaving the city and getting acquainted with the foibles of country life.
The popularity of this video is a testament to Eugene's charm as well as his expertise. Just read the comments.
This video will remain posted as a tribute to a wonderful man.
Below, please find the original video description.
Eugene Fytche is well known for his knowledge on log fences in Eastern Ontario. This video is based on one of Eugene's public presentations.
Log fences have been part of the culture for protective and agricultural fencing wherever there is an easily harvested source of logs. The continuing development, of log fences demonstrates their adaptability in a changing world, and their value to agriculture in marginal areas. Where rot-resistant wood (Cedar, etc.) is available, whether poles, split rails or logs, they can be built by hand labour and will last far longer than wire fences. As heritage items, they have even now achieved a place around public buildings and estate homes.

Eugene was always creating something to help others. This could be a couple books and a video on building log fences- 'Good Neighbours Make Good Fences' & '400 Years of Log Fences' or creating a picture book for those with dementia - 'A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words'. Eugene's last book, 'Back to the Country' is a guide for those who dream of leaving the city and getting acquainted with the foibles of country life.

Well done! Thank you for the time you invested to help us all.
LOVE THIS! For years I've looked for designs to reproduce on my NW mix terrain property with large rocky/ boulder sections. Many thanks for your research and sharing!
This video was an extremely well researched and informative presentation. I live north of Kingston, ON on the border of Leeds and Lanark counties and am surrounded by many of these fence styles. The granite outcrops of the Canadian Shield have dictated a particular choice of style. I'd love to meet the man who put this together. This August, I'm taking a course called "Heritage Fence Building" in Perth, ON.taught by Master Fence Builder and dairy farmer, Frank Myke. My own fence will go up in Sept.
herb westcott You need to meet Ronny Bennett lol He's been building them his whole life. The saying around here is if there's a fence he built it. If it's falling down he didn't build it lol I'm 20 mins east of Perth so is Ronny. He's building them 365 days a year around here. Vary neat to watch him go.
Thanks great video
I’m building some cedar split rail & log fences in my yard .I enjoy the work and what nice fences they make !
This gave me ideas!
Thanks for your video. I have a picture of Garth Williams drawing of a log house and fence used in the book Little House in the Big Woods. My artist friend is creating a gingerbread rendition of this house and fence.

great video! Thank you, from Penetanguishene, Ont. This should keep some of the deer out of the garden and away from the trees!
The a-frame fence is also called a buck and rail fence. Great video!
Russel fence patent in Canada, what good would it do to patent a fence that you have to make yourself?
