Jeeez.... this guy has got some balls, I had my heart in my mouth watching that, there were a couple of corners early on that looked like he'd gone in too hot and run wide coming out, I was expecting the worse, well done though epic doing that in the wet.
The track surface is fairly "polished" on the optimum lines through the corners and bends. The grippiest surface in the wet can be off the racing line where the surface isn't as smooth.
For us mere mortals (who take a car to the ring), Andy offers amazing coaching. Having him in the passenger seat for most of a day was the best introduction to this track I could have asked for. Look him up and pay him for his expertise. He got me under 9 minutes BTG in a 225hp car by about 2pm, which was my goal for my first day at the ring. Killer dude. Relaxed, funny, and literally knows every pavement ripple on the track.
"Turns out these are alright!" This got me giggling, as he was still on rain tyres. (probably not with his favorite brand, or hasn't tested them before) Aaah watching Andy doing a lap on the bike is always a good thing.
I'd used these 2 years previously at a wet practice at Schleiz am Dreicke. Got pretty good on them, rode far better then than in this video, it's way too conservative compared to what the bike and tyres could do. But: (consults big book of racing excuses) Ze planks dont bend, even for me. I wasnt sure what tyre pressures to run so guessed a bit high, it's better than too low. Its 2 years since.... blah blah. I'd not even seen the bike for 51.5 weeks.... and was so giddy about finally riding again I set off on the wrong side of the road. I'm supposed to be selling the bike to pay the mortgage, so a bit of acclimatisation seems sensible. I won a 3 hour unlimited endurance race in New Zealand on similar sort of set up. It was 2009, I was riding a K5 GSXR600 made up out of 2 smashed up bikes, and it had standard suspension, and we were on borrowed well worn wet race tyres. I thought we had no chance. We did 1 less pit stop than everyone else, and that made up the difference. We won by less than 30 seconds. We had to have 45 minutes between stops, everyone else did 30 minutes between stops. This worked because you use less fuel when you've got far less traction. And I think the stock suspension works far better than race suspension in the wet.
Wow, simply wow! I had the pleasure of meeting Andy back in 2010 on a trip over when I stayed with Bren & Daisy Dog. Andy was a top bloke, very generous with his time, down to earth and very patient with advice for novice Ring enthusiasts. Hats off to you Andy, your a master on two wheels!

This is why I had multiple bikes, swopping wheels is too much bother
He doesn't stand around long enough for me to fit cameras ;) Seriously though, we're very customer-orientated on the school days, and if there's good riding conditions, the customers get first dibs.
Avoiding the dry line at those speeds on a bike takes some serious restraint i guess. In theory it sounds easy but just look at it! I nearly died from watching :O
@@FragEightyfive That makes sense. I do it on the road to avoid getting killed by jackass car drivers who are "taking the racing line" cutting halfway into my lane. Turning in late is a technique they use at the Isle of Man also to avoid running out of turning space. Reducing radius corners are a bitch.
@@brianstearns3692 no that is not the reason. It is wet and the normal racing line laden with rubber provides no grip. Not because it gives him turning radius or anything.

Super Andy Carlisle. 2 thoughts in this moment... 1st when someone thinks to be a special driver in his bmw, porsche or so on... Give a look to this video.... And 2nd if you hate someone and you want a bad moment for him..... Say him to do 3 km at Andy speed with the same bike. Chapeau Andy and what a video. Thx so much
Sweet baby cheeses. It took me half a lap to stop freaking out every corner thinking he was going to spear off the track. Then it was only every second corner! Poor Dale had to cuddle the GoPro for the rest of the afternoon to bring its heartrate down..
Who is scared of hydroplaning? Not Andy Carlile that's for sure. That was insane. I damn near had a panic attack just watching it from the comfort of my office chair lol. His 7 minute lap, while faster and more obstacles, was crazy but the lack of rain didn't make quite as frightening. Stupid question from someone that does not know motorcycles, what is that orange fluid in that small container up on the right side near the throttle? Doesn't seem to be enough for break fluid or coolant. My other assumption would have been a catheter deposit for when I pissed myself going around the track at that speed in the rain on a bike 😁
So, what's with the line then? Some corners he just sticks to the outside, and yet the karussell he's on line, I would have thought that concrete would be low grip in the wet? Are some corners just known to be bad in the wet, or more likely to collect Porsche fluid? When I was there in the wet I just avoided the track altogether :D
The racecars have 'polished' the racing line to a smooth finish, and it's about 50-75% less grippy than the surrounding surface. As for the Karussell, the concrete isn't so bad when you consider the camber bonus.
Mark. The place is a patchwork quilt of different ages and conditions of tarmac. And as mentioned the polishing and rubber deposits are a challenge. This was more exploring just how much grip was available and how the bike reacted. It ought to be somewhat speedier, but for a number of reasons discretion is the name of.... someone who is not in hospital for 3 months.
No Porsche fluids. Event is bikes only private hire. TF is great, but wondering about the floor is a real drain on enjoyment. There is a reason a lot of the customers come again and again, bikes only it's one of the best bits of tarmac ever laid.
I've got niney nine problem's. But the b....rake fluid level ain't one O dem. It's low because the pads are down. That's what's meant to happen. No, it won't get 'topped up'. That would suggest a fundamental lack of understanding. The interwebs is great sometimes. 100 messages about my brake fluid being too low isnt one of those times. A.
Wow, that was awesome. Question: I'm only a moto weekend warrior. Can someone explain what the greenish light in the speedometer is, and what the flashing light to the right is? Thank you in advance.
Gonna guess the flashing white light is a gear shift indicator to let him know when to shift and stay in the power band. Not sure on what the other light is though, maybe abs? That's 100%, a guess though.
As the cars go around the track in the dry they leave a layer of rubber on the racing line. When it rains it makes this rubber layer very slippery so in the wet it's actually more grippy away from the racing line.
As Lasso says. The heavy car use also means some parts are highly polished. Some parts of the track are surprisingly poor grip, other bits aren't so bad. Best to learn the difference in 4 wheels though.
