- Full 4K walking tour of Doncaster City Centre, South Yorkshire, England
A look at the market town of Doncaster in Yorkshire in the North of England

Doncaster Town Centre was basked in beautiful sunshine when we filmed this walk through the streets to take a look at the people, shops and businesses in this bustling market town
In this video we take the route from Market Place, down Baxter Gate, then onto St Sepulchre Gate, Trafford Way, Cleveland Street and Silver Street before ending up back at Doncaster Market.
I was shocked just how big the centre of Doncaster actually is and how many big name shops there are in the streets and also in the Frenchgate Centre and Colonnades Centre. It's fair to say that there are all the big names you'd expect to see on any high street in Doncaster.
Doncaster is a market town on the River Don in South Yorkshire in the North of England.
Doncaster Market has hundreds of indoor and outdoor stands and stalls, including the beautiful Corn Exchange, a grand Victorian shopping centre.
Over 300,000 people live and reside in and around the town, although sadly it has been regularly voted in the top 10 of worst places to live in the UK.
The town also has an airport just five miles South East of the town centre known as Doncaster Sheffield Airport, and because of its location Doncaster is extremely popular with business as a hub for distribution centres for goods.
So whether you want to visit the town for the horse racing at Doncaster Race Course, the shops and shopping in the Frenchgate Centre or to hang out it's easy to get to, really easy to park up and walk into the centre and there are plenty of places to visit and look around here.
Famous and notable people associated with Doncaster include the singer and musician Louis Tomlinson from the band One Direction.
TV show celebrity Jeremy Clarkson also famously hails from the town, actor Brian Blessed comes from nearby Mexborough
I thought you might like to see what Doncaster is like in 2021 so we took our cameras and filmed this walk through the town to show it in its raw form so you can see for yourself.
So what's it like to live in Doncaster in 2021? Well there are good areas and bad areas in every town and city and it's no different here.
Things to do in Doncaster include visiting the Minster, the racecourse, or maybe a gig at a live music venue like The Leopard to see some live music, walking around the markets here etc. There are lots of things here if you're wondering what to do in Doncaster whilst you're here.

My husband and I went there in 2019 because of Louis Tomlinson’s video “Back To You”. We went to Keepmoat Stadium, and the skating rink at the Dome;-) Also, we stopped at the Yorkshire zoo after finding Louis’ old school at Hall Cross. He sings about Silver Street and it’s neon signs in his song “Change”…We all know that feeling when you go back home and things have changed…but also kind of stay the same. Louis and One Direction filmed “Gotta Be You” in MY hometown, so I get nostalgic every time I go back home . Louis knows how to write songs that one can relate to. He’s ace
Just walked through on my way home from work. Dead, full of down and outs freaks and weirdos. Looks like you caught this on a quiet Sunday morning maybe. Town centre is finished and certainly doesn't belong to the locals anymore. That's for sure.
Dont' think it was a Sunday - think it was a mid morning one on a midweek from what I can remember
I agree. I’m from Doncaster and town centres usually full of junkies and chavs. Most of the shops in frenchgate are closed now
Too right
Very true its horrided to walk round
Locals? Who are moving in?
At one time of day, the market place was thriving, fabulous place to shop for just about anything you could think of from fresh breads, cheeses, meats through to plants, flowers, clothes and everyday essentials. The many independent shops offered great choices too. It was a busy town with lots to offer. Now (in my opinion) it is full of cheap shops, empty shops, boarded up places, multitude of pubs and cheap drinking holes, fast foods, phone shops, vape shops and not much else...except the host of doorway huggers, people down on their luck, those with addictions and during non covid times, streets where vomit dodging becomes an art form. Such a tragic shame, another great British town lost forever.
You're right. I loved the market and all the characters, I especially remember the china stall where they'd put on an a great show to attract the punters, throwing the plates around and with a 'patter' better than most 'entertainers' on tv nowadays. Then there was the lovely smell of Armitage's sweet stall and the fruit and veg sellers pitching bargains and washing locally grown celery, not to mention Britain's best fish market - including the cow heal and tripe stalls. . . . . folks who don't like tripe have never tried it done right! The there was Leesings near the market for the most delicious hot roast pork sandwiches - mmm. A great town.
The corrupt idiotic Council pedestrianised the town and it fell apart.
Born in Doncaster in 1961 and grew up there, now living in Australia this has brought back so many memories, thank you for the tour around Donny, thoroughly enjoyed it !!
ha ha you sound like me ,born here in 1969 and came to Australia in 83 lived in Edenthorpe
Thanks for sharing this. It was pure nostalgia for me. I lived in Doncaster for eight months in 2009/10 as a foreign language assistant. Best 8 month of my life so far :) and seeing the town all bright and sunny was very lovely.
Ah great stuff - hope you are well and thank you so much for watching too!
I lived there for 6 years. Best 6 years of my life. I'm from Estonia. Love 🇪🇪
WOW! thank you for that tour of Donny! it was nice to see how different it looks since I left in 1992. It sure does look a lot cleaner than it used to.
Lovely vlog, really enjoyed your walk around Sunny Donny. Thank you.🥰👍🏾
My pleasure 😊 Have a look on my channel there's so many more!
Thanks for the video! I lived in Doncaster for 6 years. Best time in my life! Cheers!
You’re welcome !
Town centre has changed so much since I was a child. Dad used to look up at the buildings and tell the history of them from when he was little
Lived in Donny all my childhood, I live in US now. This makes me want to come back. Still have my brother there, excuse to go back to visit, but i do love it, and miss the folks over there. Thank you for posting this my friend.
Love my town ❤️ can’t wait for Christmas
It was good to see Doncaster somewhere I haven't been to for a long time, it's changed a lot what a shame about the decline of the market place I remember Doncaster having a good market many moons ago, thank you for showing 😎
Thanks Alex - the market might be better when things get back to normal - I'll film an updated one when it does
Great film again Gimbal! My home town and where i still live. Surprised you didn''t go to the Railway Station and its 1930's frontage. Doncaster is famous for its railways and locomotive building. Glad the music is back. The cherry on top of the cake for me!!
I'm going back to film another one I think Anthony as I got a bit lost in this one!
Great vid!...Love the music...Funky!

I was born in Doncaster and lived within walking distance of the town centre which was my playground as a kid. There are so many changes since I lived there. Some not always for the best.
Louis…is this you:-)
Thank you for the video. I live in Doncaster
Hi, please would you suggest the best place to live as an Immigrant?
it always amazes me that high st was part of the great north road a1 before the 60s bypass .could you imagine the traffic
Corrr I never knew that! That’s crazy. The traffic would have been horrific!
I remember it well. It used to take longer to get through Donny than it did to drive there from London. It all had to get over North Bridge!!
@@GimbalWalkTV no there was not the amount of traffic back then it was easy to get through town and you could park anywhere in any street free for as long as you wanted I'm talking about the 60s /70s time
I really enjoyed tnat thank you
My pleasure!
Hi just discovered the malta walk and have very fond memories of living there in 1974 in tigne barracks my dad was in the royal marines .
I also remember swimming across from tigne point too valletta and in my reflection of this i realise how i took a huge risk doing this but what a memory . Steven Bruce
Crikey you’re a brave one! That’s one heck of a swim!!
Yeah it was i also remember swimming in front of the barracks with my brother i was trying to catch an octopus because the maltese paid us 50 cents and the granetas were amazing ,but i had an encounter with a shark swimming right next to me so i took off like an exocet missile to safety when back on dry land mummy shark came looking for its young one thank god i was out of the water 🙏 . You should let me know if I did ok - I went a strange route and almost got lost!
I let you know 👍
Lived here all my life, true it has seen better days and times, and we have lost too many old buildings but after regularly visiting other towns and cities around the country and comparing, Doncaster is still quite a nice town. Thank you for the video, there is a lot more to see, looking forward to part 2 :)
Looking forward to filming the next part of this one
@@GimbalWalkTV Thank you for the video, you did a great job! I live on the outskirts of Doncaster. If you were to do a follow up video you may consider including the following: In the town centre, Doncaster Minster, the newly paved and landscaped train station, the new Danum Library, Museum & Art Gallery, Cast Theatre and the brand new Savoy Cinema. On the outskirts highlights are: Lakeside & The Dome Leisure Centre, The Hilton Garden Inn Hotel and the School for the Deaf (opposite the hotel), Cusworth Hall and, of course, the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Hope that helps. Best wishes!

Some nice Architecture. Looks nice and clean
Yes very!
i live in doncaster now , it has lovey architecture , and a great history , the oldest classic horse race the st. leger dates back to 1776 , the mallard and flying scotsman steam engines were built here , all the surrounding villages had coal mines . another great video . thank you :) perhaps a future project for you is to film looking upwards at the architecture , york is full of little gems !
Oh yes York is definitely another one I will do more on (just did a couple - habe a look on the channel)
Will do more Doncaster ones too soon 👍
Russian name of the city.
Don - River. Caster is coal, fire. (Namely they did charcoal). That is, we have a complete compliance of the name and the mining region.
In fact, Doncaster is Don-Bass (Donetskaya Pool)
The second question is when they were the Russian language. Thames of the river also translates as dark)))
I love what I’m seeing, it’s quite and peaceful I believe
It was when I was there!
full of nostalgia for me bc i lived here as a kid
It is my birthplace and I love it to bits!
Well said - wish more people were positive like that!
Wow I wouldn’t recognise the centre. Well filmed
Very nice ok place lovely are living there

You did well mate Doncaster’s changed a lot over the last 10 years not how I remember it has a child but hey ho you gotta move with the times still love my hometown
Well said Kevin
A pleasure to watch this walk. Doncaster looking lovely in the sunshine.
Thank you! Agreed!
thank you for featuring my town of Doncaster ,it is vastly improving all the time ,we have a lovely waterfront with barges ,Silver street is the place to be on a friday ,saturday night ,a lot of the pubs and clubs have boarded up their windows during lockdown to safe guard the premises ,moving on there is the beautiful minster just off the waterfront ,and as you say the racecourse where the famous St LEGER is run and the KEEPMOAT stadium home to Doncaster rovers ,also up town is the civic quater where we have the cast theatre ,and a new cinema and eateries as well as the dancing waters well worth a look next time .
Well said Dawn - I’m back soon to film more so will look at the places you mentioned - thank you! 👍👍❤️
@@GimbalWalkTV Wouldnt bother mate better places to visit like Bournemouth or poole
Barely recognized it. The last time I lived there was 1961, but I have been back on several occasions to visit family. It was always a bustling town, but it what appears to have happened since my last visit about ten years ago has shocked me.
what happened was your generation spent all your money instead of investing it so now the youth have no money to spend
also shopping moved online :D
Hi, I'm from the Caribbean, Trinidad 🇹🇹, I love the work, music and subtitles you did . Good work clean video .continue the good work ..Now I want to visit but didn't see the train stations 🤝

Was born in Donny, schooled in Danum Grammar, left when I was 21. Ocassionally go back, and always saddened by its decline. But nonetheless I will always have a certain attachment. Great videos of my home town Donny but I moved to Swansea recently and it would be great great to show beautiful Wales 😌
Oh definitely
there’s a few Wales places on my channel! 👍👍
Really enjoyed this excellent walking tour of Doncaster which looks a very modern town centre and not what I expected at all. People must appreciate that most places have their grot spots. The junkies, chavs and drop out's who congregate are not really the fault of the town planners but a sub-culture which has developed in society that is blighting all towns and cities right across the country. I bet there are equally as many weirdo's per square foot in the town where I live. Great video though!
Thank you. Agree with your analysis 100%
@John Cliff Bit extreme that John 😮
One thing missing in this tour video is the stadium of Doncaster.. otherwise thanks for your time and effort for this beautiful video
Thank you - I will add the stadium in the next one for sure!
Yet again another surprise in that Doncaster is lovely, I will never slag off South Yorkshire again. Please can you go to Halifax, there are so many places of interest and many beautiful Victorian buildings. x

I spent the first 20 years of my life in Doncaster, born and raised in Hatfield. Spent the last 20 years living in the Midlands and even though I fond memories of my 80s n 90s childhood and youth in Doncaster, I can't ever see me going back. We used to twag school sometimes and hang around the arndale centre and the market. We'd always be buying goofy things from the old joke shop inside the market, and then buy some vhs tapes from the stall opposite, because they were only 50p. And then it was off to buy a few records from our price. Everyone remember our price upstairs in the arndale?
Then it was off back to the market place and JD to check out the latest Reebok pumps and Jordan shoes. Good times.
Those days things were so much different weren't they Liam. Our Price records was one place I was spending all of my spare money!
@@GimbalWalkTV bought my first record in our price. It was def leppards animal, and I'd bought it out of my pocket money. Had to have been around summer of 88 if memory serves me correctly, and I'd have been 7 years old.
Do you remember the old Britannia stores aswell? I would go to town back then with my aunt and grandmother ever Saturday, and our price, Britannia, Woolworths, and Marks and Spencer were always on the list of places we'd shop in. And to finish off we would stop in at a cafe opposite what is now frechgate centre, and it was called poppin at pippens. I bet that cafe vanished 25-30 years ago now.
Everything had changed on your video, and the only two places that looked the same were rothwells chippy, and the black bull pub. And even rothwells had had a facelift. Makes me quite sad to see the place as it is today.
Looks great, love the fact that there are plenty of beautiful trees in the main shopping area. THX
You're welcome!

When the southern bus station closed it effectively killed that area of the town centre, waterdale died and any business around the area also. It was such a shame to see

i saw this movie about Doncaster and compared it to another about the same town in the 60'. Absolutely unrecognizable. Where have gone all that activity, the people , the transport activities, the many shops, instead of children you see pesioners and strangers. the old traditional building repaced by mega-boxes. modern towns and cities are dying, like in all of UK and western countries.

Nice video, but you missed Waterdale,'Culteral quarter',and The Girls on Thorne road on the Beat.
Aye 👍
Doncaster has a very mixed town centre. Some of it, especially around Cleveland Street and the Waterdale Centre is ugly, but equally a lot of it is lovely. Frenchgate since it was extended is very nice.
Further out, there is the lovely little town of Bawtry, and Tickhill is also nice.
What's sad though is the empty shops, and big voids like Debenhams that will be hard to fill.
Yes so true
I wonder what will replace them
Was a student at Donny Tech in the late 70s and I’m struggling to recognise anything of the town now. Spent a bit of study time in the ‘Staff of Life’ pub and Allports Cafe. Are they still there? On balance I prefer Adelaide, nothing’s boarded up here.
