Great to catch your video again. I have as many perennial food plants as possible in my small garden. I have perennial leeks, various herbs, ground apple and trellised fig trees. I experimented with my own concoction of compost tea and I am very happy with the result. The soil is thanking me for it with healthy looking plants. From Bundaberg, Queensland.
@@loveofdirt I have been seriously working on my soil lately and I have learned from a number of sources that it is important to have perennial plant mixed in with you annuals to ensure the soil microbes have something to feed on all year round. I purchased the leek on ebay last year. For memory they came from NSW. Very happy with how they arrived. I just put them in a clump and this year they are great and ready to eat. UA-cam won't let us upload photos or I would send you one so you can see what they look like.
Hi Nicki, I’m so glad I found your channel. I’m new to the sub-topics (move here from Tropical Townsville) and have just settled on a property north of Brisbane. I love your idea of planting a new bed each month! I can share two ways we eat okra, the first is to coat with your fav seasonings such as salt, pepper, olive oil, paprika then into the air fryer until crispy. We serve to guests on a grazing board or an entrees/snacks. The second way we love to eat it is to cut into bite size pieces and fry them off in a pan with a bit of oil. I season lightly with salt. This process reduces the stickiness. Then I remove from the pan and add onion, garlic and bite size pieces of chicken thigh. Fry until brown, then add tomato and cook until reduced. Add back okra and season to taste with salt, pepper and paprika. We eat with steamed jasmine rice.
Im taking the plunge and getting some wicking beds. The neighbors have a mulberry tree on the fence line, right near where I put our raised vegetable gardens. And now, thanks to your videos, I know where all these little yellow feeder roots come from. 😮. So frustrating. Everything (except eggplant and lemongrass) just struggles along no matter that Im feeding and watering regularly. I have to move beds anyway, as we had our house raised, and now our beds are getting less than 6hrs sun. Loving your videos.
Bush beans have never grown well for me, but it's only been 1 year, I shall persevere! I'm looking forward to trying snake beans and winged beans this year!
As h@alicetownsville6547 says, fried Okra is great! We do ours by lightly hitting/rolling with a rolling pin to separate the sections (like fingers on a hand) then batter with straight tempura or a salt and pepper tempura batter and deep fry. Don't let the fruit age too much or it will go woody.
Great video again. Thank you. I’d love to know more about your irrigation system. Where do you buy your pipes and fittings? Bunnings? What size are they? Roughly cost etc. 👍
I am very intrigued by your aquaponic system and growing your own fish!! I am wondering if I can do that with King George Whiting?? Soo expensive in the shops here!! Cheers!! Adelaide - South Australia!!
We have done jade perch before, they are a lot easier than the Barra. In cooler climates you can do other fish like trout and perch. Freshwater local species are probably best.
Definitely giving your sweet potato hack a go this summer!! I grow heaps of sweet potato over summer in Northern NSW (cause it gets so damn hot and its one of the few plants that handle it) every year and always end up with the odd large potato and lots of small ones. Thanks for sharing.
I can pull them out earlier too, I used to wait until Anzac Day for harvest now I pull them out just before autumn equinox spring when I plant my garlic. Let me know how you go!
Butcher birds have stopped thankfully. Not keen on feeding them, but I give them bugs from the garden and supply them with water. I need to get my sunflowers in too! I still haven't, it's not summer without sunflowers
Ill health, no gardening happening here. Love, love, love your inspirational garden. My treasured walking onions have all got seed pods and some have little bulbets ..I’m just going to plonk the seed pods back onto the soil and see if I get some babies..I’d hate to lose them. Any suggestions.
Hi Nikki love your videos. I am learning how to grow vegetables in SE Queensland. After living down south in Canberra it is definitely very different. I have a problem with my cucumbers. Heaps of flowers but no setting fruit. Is it like zucchini and have a male and female flower to be used to pollinate and set the fruit?I don’t seem to have many bees so I have started planting cosmos and other flowers to try and encourage more pollinaters. Thank you for any help
Yeah most varieties of cucumber need to be pollinated similar to zucchinis. I think there are a few self pollinating ones about. I also find if cucumber fly sting them before they get going that stunts them too.
if u need more ginger, watch Hoochos channel on how he grows hydroponic ginger, amazing yield. I have a question, have u ever tried cutting an IBC off at the top and bottom to make a planter box? I am thinking of trying that, I can get IBCs for less than $50 so it seems a whole lot more cost effective, I also have the tubing for lining the top edge for about 10 of them
I was going to watch his video, I am thinking of putting it on the aquaponics but I am just not sure what’s happening with it. The list of things we need to do around here is massive. I haven’t used IBCs as a planter only a wicking bed with the bottom still on, and the grow beds for our aquaponics are ibcs, but I’ve never used it as an edging, they are pretty bendy so you might still need the frame.
@@loveofdirt Oh yeah I meant to keep the frame as well, I have an IBC compost bin with the bottom cut off and in contact with the ground and it has the frame cut to size to keep it in shape, I need to make a funnel for the top somehow as getting stuff in is a bit messy
Don't think you have a choice at this point, you need to feed those butcher birds. They will become your immediate friend. It's really unusual for them to swoop you in your yard. Magpies and butcher birds normally respect humans when they were there first
I chuck them worms, beetles, curl grubs and grasshoppers, you think I need to give them human food? This is the first year they’ve swooped me - normally it’s everyone else. They didn’t swoop me today though so I think they’ve finished for the year 🙌
@loveofdirt if they do nest close nothing you do will stop them swooping, I know someone who couldn't get in their backyard for months, it's very disconcerting to look up and have one almost in your face!
@@dougs_urbanfarm They've stopped now and are my friends again, I still flinch when they come close but I agree I think the nest was just a little bit closer this year.
@@loveofdirt direct, and then I tried the paper towel in moist bag. The weather has been weird also about 3 weeks ago in Tewantin.we had some cool nights. I think my corn seeds were unviable.
Beautiful garden, I love gardening because it helps relieve stress and relax. Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos with everyone.
Thanks for watching

I need to look after my perennials better, I sort of neglect them but I did not know about perennial leeks! I need those.

Yes it’s always a good idea to leave something behind. I love flowers for that purpose. I’ll go hunting for some leeks.
I cleared out some of my perennial leek babies - I wish I was your neighbour as I could give you heaps. Hmmm.... Post maybe...??

I tried so many things to stop the roots, wicking beds were the only solution that worked. It’s often not something you think about.
I love the way you maximise your planting and that is what i do in my garden. Have a good day from South Australia.
Thank you

We did Belotti beans this year too we just canned them
Nice, I think it will be too wet here so we’ll probably just eat them fresh

new peach trees heapes ov fruit the wattle birds love them

Great video Nicki. I noticed your seeds are in brown packets. Where did you buy them from?
These are mine, you can get them from my website.
Hi Nicki, great video. Can you tell me where you get your teepee trellising from please.
The trellis is just the galvanised trellis from Bunnings - two pieces cable tied together, I think it’s whites brand maybe..
How do you grow your own crayfish and fish? And where did you get your seedling trays from?
In aquaponics if you scroll through my videos from a few years back I do a tour.

do you name your chickens my sister calls her fav chicken littlebaby jesus
yes we have Pesto and Popcorn. Sadly we’ve lost honey, soy, satay and lucky. We also had butter and noodle who both turned out to be roosters.
