  • Tonight a warning about a popular and powerful antibiotic. Tens of thousands of patients across the country including some right here in the bay area report devastating side effects and in some cases death. We went to both the government and to one of the largest drug makers in the country to find out what is being done about it.

I took Levaquin for a petty long time in 1997 in an attempt to clear up a uterine infection so that I could have a hysterectomy. Since then I have had a continuous problem with tendons. I have torn rotator cuff twice in right shoulder and once in left shoulder. Had to have thumb surgery on tendon release. And have pretty much constant joint and tendon pains since. I have ofte. I was prescribed Levaquin myself before and I went and did some research before I started taking it. I asked him to change the prescription to something else like an older drug that has possibly less side effects than these new ones we have to be our own doctor sometimes and we have to look up the side effects and do some research before we put stuff in our bodies.

Anyone who trusts anything a doctor says without checking it out themselves is a fool. In my experience and in the experiences of people I've known, doctors screw up more than they fix. Also, the doctor never knows remotely as much about medications and interactions as the pharmacist, so always ask your pharmacist before taking a new med.

Quinolones - Class of Antibiotics of reserve, means it can treat very dangerous infections, like Anthrax and Tularemia and others , so it’s not recommended to prescribe those antibiotics often, otherwise bacterias develops resistance to quinolones and we wouldn’t have something to use in case of biological attack. Yes, new group of quinolones like : Levofloxacin, Moxofloxacin( Avelox) have multiple side effects. Some of new group of quinolones been taking even of market because of overwhelming adverse reactions, like Tequine. But old group of quinolones: Ciprofloxacin still relatively has low adverse side effects, but use of those still recommended not often , because Cipro - first line of treatment for Anthrax and other similar infections..!!

I can’t have antibiotics anymore I feel like I’m going insane on them, short of breath, sense of severe impending doom and just a feeling of severe sickness. Effective family of antibiotics, but they should be used as an emperic or last line defense. For respiratory infections I always ask my doctor for an initial shot of cephtriaxone along with a z pac. I never had any issues with this treatment and usually feel improved within a few hours of the shot.
