    I love including the historical context. It gives the music a setting, possible motives while teaching history.
    It also underlines the fact that everything was new, much controversial, when it first came on the scene.

      That is a compliment to be taken seriously: a Polish pianist compliments a Ukrainian pianist for playing Chopin. Wow. Now, I believe!

    Love her commentary on Chopin, the time, Polish nationalism, the drawing room context of his performances. Love her playing, no overly dramatic rubato, just skill and emotion! Awesome!

      Dramatic rubato makes it better. ( not overly). Talent is more brave. Otherwise just like all others. Afraid to be brave. Perhaps because they don't really feel the real drama if mucis.

      Listen from Cziffra. ...
      I am a professional classical music performer.
      In my opinion ( that is just my opinion-- I know) , Cziffra is the ultimate highest...
      We can go phrase by phrase, and I will tell you, why Cziffra is far the best of all others. Of course, you will have to be a
      professional classical musician to be able to andurstand the difference.

    Great commentary on this piece Valentina! Thank you especially for the historical information in the bottom half. My parents bought me a record of Chopin's life and that is when I fell in love with his music and there was some narrative about his life, but not as much information as you put that explains what was going on then and influenced his music. Thank you.

    Yes, she is playing barefooted. Does that surprise anyone? And, further, I would not be too surprised to find out that she plays the keys with them as well. She is strength and loveliness blended. Dear, thank you for making our lives richer.

    Besides the great music I also thoroughly enjoyed Valentina's explanation about its historical origins, "program" music and the importance of Chopin at a time when Poland had disappeared as an independent country. She writes very well, in a simple, conversational style, but giving all her perspective as a musician too. Brava, Valentina, brava! Carry on!

    Easily one of Chopin's greatest works. That final little solo melody at the end is one of the most beautiful moments in music, and the journey this piece takes one on is amazing.
    No fantasy comes close, even those involving Jessica Alba.

    I have heard several performances o fthis that sounded more like a schubert piece. I appreciate that this is played in a way that sounds chopin distinct and keeps the polish character during the flourishy part

    This commentary is spellbinding--I have just recently read about the Polish uprising--the world is ignorant of so much history, myself included. The context is not only of paramount importance in understanding the music, but the perception of Chopin is completely altered, forever, in one's mind. This is an epiphany of monumental musical proportions. We have you to thank, and so much more to look forward to in your works and your words, which are a bridge across the centuries.

    • @emlmm88

      It's actually really nice to have a feel for the pedals. Plus, everyone practices barefoot, so perhaps it should become the norm for performance as well.

    • @kupopoporo4447
      @kupopoporo4447 8 років тому +5

      Everyone practices barefoot? I have to disagree. She is the first one i see playing barefoot :p

    • @emlmm88
      @emlmm88 8 років тому +11

      _I_ practice barefoot, and unless you're one of those people who wears their shoes inside their own house (and let's be honest, can they really be classified as _people_?), it's far too inconvenient to put shoes or socks on before having a go at the daily piano routine.
      I remember playing barefoot when I was four years old, and the pick-up-and-play quality of the piano made it very accessible to me. Indeed, if I'd had to put shoes on every single time I wanted to practice the instrument or compose, I doubt I'd still be playing today. Come to think of it, I can't think of a single pianist friend of mine who doesn't practice barefoot. So there, myehhh!

    • @kupopoporo4447
      @kupopoporo4447 8 років тому +1

      @emlmm88 8 років тому +1

      Anime Lover Doesn't it ever feel weird to not feel the pedal though? Try playing without socks, just once. I almost guarantee you'll prefer it after a few hours of getting used to it.

    Hi MIke Karren--I appreciate your attempt at historical accuracy. I think that you still might have your sisters mixed up. It was his older sister Ludwicka who was with him when he died and was able to smuggle his heart back into Poland. The issue of TB or CF is unresolved--I'd be surprised that someone with CF in those days would have been able to live so long! Perhaps it sounds catty to say it, but Liszt had the advantage of living longer than most of his contemporaries, so he was able to draw on the genius of others in his later compositions. It's true of Haydn, too--some of his greatest.works were written after Mozart passed away.

    Awesome and interesting reading once again. I agree on detailed programs that can become dated. It happened in some parts of Pink Floyd last Waters-leaded album "The Final Cut" with names of presidents and other historic figures of around 1983. Anyway I prefer Liszt to Chopin ... as I adore "The Final Cut" ^_^ Sorry, I couldn't resist, lol. Keep playing in such a wonderful way Valentina ! (And please come to Italy ^_^)

    Very interesting, although I contest that Liszt's Funerailles was inspired by this fantasy by Chopin. The pieces are quite dissimilar. The center section is very similar to the most famous Polonaise, in A flat major. So it was a tribute to Chopin after his death by Liszt, who was his friend and contemporary.

    • @chrisvuille9380

      Compare the center section of funerailles to the center section of the e-flat polonaise.

    @theoryman1 yes, you're right!! there are only 3 measures of the arpeggios at that part and she did indeed play 4...It's an inconsistent repetition from before and it's easy to miss. I admit that I had to pay special attention to it when I started to memorize it. I really hope she catches that mistake and fixes it before she performs it again!

  • @Zhinarkos

    Love her hands in this. Perhaps a bit manly, but her hands and fingers are both strong and nimble. She has amazing articulation and dynamics and that motion of muscles does convey that. Nailing those things require both good pronation and good supination. All the pianists do it. Whether it's very visible or not depends on the pianist and I think there's real beauty and grace in her movement.

    Oh!! I almost loved your interpretation! Everything was going perfect until the very last moment before the ending; the part with only the right hand playing C - Eb - C - Bb - Ab. Why did you left the pedal!!?? I respect your decision, I just think it doesn't work like that. But thank you so much for your performance!

    Valentina, I wish you could put up some slow motion videos on these Chopin/Liszt pieces (especially etudes) so we trying hard students could better study your movements.
