Mel Brooks is one of the geniuses behind "Get Smart", a spine-tingling espionage thriller from the 1960s. Maxwell Smart was always intelligent, and his working knowledge of common spy gadgets like the ever-efficient Cone of Silence is amazing. The Chief just doesn't understand Max's genius and utter competence.
The theme music is "Brasilia," by Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass, from their album "What Now My Love". It's the third track (of six) on Side 2. I know because I have a copy of the record.
This was the second game show from Bob Stewart since he left Goodson-Todman in 1964. The show debut on CBS four months after Eye Guess debuted on NBC in January. He came up with the idea after he cut up a magazine photo and presented it to CBS. They put this show on after rejecting Hollywood Squares, which would later become a big hit for NBC with Peter Marshall hosting instead of Bert Parks, who hosted the pilot. As for Jack Whitaker, it would be his only game show that he would host. He would have a long career at CBS and ABC covering a lot of sports including football and horse racing. May he rest in peace.
Because not everything he considered and programmed for the network was a success. Besides, "THE FACE IS FAMILIAR" ended up in prime-time, not on Fred's daytime "turf" (he wasn't involved with that part of CBS' schedule yet).

I could see Allen Ludden hosting this but Jack does a good job.

And as I recall, the CBS station in Miami (WTVJ ch 4) didn’t show it at all; otherwise I’m sure I’d have watched.
