One of my favorite ground cover with flowers...Iceplant (Delosperma spp.)! In this video I talk all about hardy ice plant including a bit of history, some of my favorite places to plant it, how to get it started, and how to enjoy it! This succulent, mat-forming groundcover produces tons of vibrant flowers atop evergreen foliage. If you love color, drought tolerant plants, have lots of sun, and poor soil, this is a great option for you! #groundcover #iceplant #hardyiceplant #delosperma
Ice plant has been amazing in my Colorado garden! Spreads very quickly, very heat tolerant, and produces beautiful blooms in a wide variety of colors.
I love hearing that! I was really inspired by the ice plant I saw at the Denver botanical garden
Love all the Natural rocks amongst your garden plantings. Never seen Ice plants, should look Beautiful.
yes!! these ones are so cool, such pretty flowers!
Very helpful and informative video. Happy to find a garden channel in my zone!
Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful! Thank you
Thank you too!
Thank you, Devin. I watched you on QVC.
Awesome!! Thanks Connie :)
This video came just in time I received these from Roberta’s about 2 weeks ago, thanks Devin.
sweet!! glad it was helpful!
Fabulous. I bought some from the Q, can't wait till they arrive!.
Im so excited for how they’re turning out!
Thank you for introducing me to the ice plant! I’m ready to plant mine today!
Glad to help!
It's aan invasive species and crowds out anything else
@@RiseOfAnarchism It absolutely is not! Please do your research. The invasive species are different. There are many different iceplant. The one I speak about in this video is 100% not invasive.
@@RiseOfAnarchism Its a sedum, itll grow perfectly well with just a piece of a branch. No roots nesesary, grows really well under some small lights like that. Its good to put around your indoor plants.
Great video. Found your channel via this video and subscribed
Sweet! Check out the recent video I made reviewing three groundcovers and you can see how the iceplant has been filling in
@@plantvibrations thanks. Just watched the whole video. I like that you show plants in the ground in real situations with good context for how to care and when to use
I love your covering succulents for PA , I am a succulent lover and have over 200. I am trying my hardest to fill out my garden with as many hardy as I can....but sempervivum only go so far. The orastachys came back this year and I love at the end of summer they get the tall purple cone flowers....beautiful. anything others you got up your sleeve, plz share.
over 200?! that's amazing!! i also have tons of semps in my garden!
@@plantvibrations yeah atleast 200, I've propped roughly 100 babies over the winter and honestly I lost count. I live in Hershey and I adore your videos. They are down to earth and helpful. We have the about the same size Jade plant, im getting ready to change her pot out so that video was SUPER helpful!!
Thanks your video and sharing! How about 100~106F in summer (Globe AZ) ? Maybe it’s not doing ground cover and it will die? I just put the greenhouse about 100F. Thanks again
Thank you! Learned a lot! One question: how do you trim an ice plant that was in a greenhouse and grew straight up? Mine are about 8 inches high and I don’t know how to trim them or when?
Just give them a haircut! You can literally cut them down to about an inch or so
I made the mistake of planting my ice plant in a large, pot, and watering weekly. It was in full sun, but never seemed to flower much, and I probably overwatered it. Suffice it to say that I lost this plant. My 2 mistakes: planting in a pot, and overwatering. I learned my lesson. I still like this plant, and will probably replant it in the coming spring in my zone 6B garden. Oh well, live and learn.
They can do well in pot provided the have great drainage!
Great and informative video. How far do you space the plants out? I have a side slope I plan to cover. Thank you!
Space about 8”!

Hello Devin, do you use any weed control practices while waiting for the ground cover to fill in? Such as mulching or Preen? If clover or crab grass gets in there you may have some challenges. I like Vinca, and watch closely for any weed infestations to prevent problems down the road😎
thats a great suggestion!!
Nice Devin will the deer leave them alone? Thank you. Take care and God Bless
Yep the deer leave them be!
I have been looking for a plant who will love it in my crappy, dry, clay like soil!
This is the one!
I didn't know they made winter hardy varieties. Although, I have had the annuals come back
yes these are amazing!!
Have you ever grown gomphrena? I am trying it for the first time this season. Any tips or recommendations would be appreciated.
i haven't but i love the bright red ones!
I'm ordering quite a few from one of my sellers. I would like to know how well it propagates? And does it produce viable seed that will easily fill in if one should die. Thank you so much.
Did you see in the video how I divided them? They propagate like that very effectively
What is a good ground cover for wet feet? Cleveland, Ohio, lots of rain and I have a trouble area by our pool that I need a steppable ground cover that likes wet soil. Thank you 😊
There is a new grass called prince tut, it's papyrus grass and it's beautiful..loves soggy soil
maybe look into corsican mint
Ice plants dont need roots or anything. Just a flower and part pf a stem, like many sedums, just plunk it in the ground. :)
Thanks for the tips!
I have 2 cover plants in my yard which are, wheels of wonder and baby sun rose. If two cover ice plants were to meet, do they fight over ground territory? Or will both coexist? Also I love these plants as a home defence, since the 🐝bees🐝 keep me safe from unwanted guests 😌
If two ice plant meet? Then they’d coexist perfectly well. I’ve not grown baby sun rose before so I can’t say for sure how it would grow alongside
@@plantvibrations Oh okay. Thank you for the reply. I will keep an eye out for these two cover plants and see what their reaction will be once they reach each other.
This is beautiful, will it grow in zone 8?
I'm in zone 8 (southern Oregon) & it grows well here. It's easy to find in our nurseries too.
Yes, perfect for zone 8!!
@@plantvibrations Great, thankyou so much 😊
👍👍 From India, next summer I will be coming to U S ( California ),
Can you kindly tell from which nursery I can buy Cooperi Ice plant online ?
The above video is ver helpful, informative and educative.
Thank you very very much 🙏🙏
You can find many in California!
Thank you very much 🙏
How far apart would you plant ice plants for the most dense amount of flower color? I just bought 6 of the sunset ice plants from QVC
Good for you! I would plant about 10” apart
@@plantvibrations can I split these ice plants from QVC in half to have more or would it kill the baby plants?
yes you absolutely can, just ensure that each chunk you divide into has some roots and some top growth@@umakeurdestiny
You’re the cutest!
Hi… I bought my ice plant 2 days back and I am in zone 9a… my question is can I plant them in container or ground at this time of may????
Please please help 🙏🏻
Now!
@@plantvibrations yes … I don’t know when to plant them….so in what month I can plant them???
@@plantvibrations you mean I can plant them now..??
Is this the same as a moss rose?
They’re different, moss rose (portulaca) is less Hardy
Update video??
I need to make one!
@plantvibrations please do! I have just recently planted a bunch of sedum and some hen and chicks on my property. Also just bought a random ice plant yesterday! I'm also in 6b so I'll be clinging to your channel for inspiration! Thanks for your content!!
@@JoshuaStockton id stick with the sedum, sempervivum and thyme! They’re my top choices

Devin did they survive the winter? Your landscape does not look well draining!
Only about 50% !
@@plantvibrations Thanks for your response! Yours did better than mine. 100% fatality rate for me.
Bro! U need to water!
I never watered once! And they bloomed from around May to October!
In my climate I have sufficient precipitation
Damn he is so attractive haha
