@Spiker985Studios he could have done this ........ and survived but that didn't happen. Why is Adam's father on the show today? Adam has red hair and it's cut ✂️ in a crue cut style 😎
Hello jtderby from btderby of north carolina. My son and I watched every episode of mythbusters and still do at times. I totally agree with you about Grant. He left us too soon.
That 2 or 3 second pause after Adam says the words "it's an origin story of respect" speaks volumes about their relationship. Over 4 years since Grant passed and talking about him can still have Adam fighting back tears. May we all be fortunate enough to forge such strong friendships.
I know I miss him, I cannot imagine how it feels for those who were gifted enough to know him. I genuinely shed tears when I head the news, I cannot imagine how unfathomably missed he is by his friends.
Adam, you _are_ "that guy from MythBusters". You always will be. That's both unavoidable and a good thing; MythBusters was the most important TV science show of this century. Oh, and "the funny-looking one" is also you. Jamie looks like a perfectly ordinary walrus.
Yeah I think maybe he doesn't realize what a big deal the show was. Because there's a big difference between "being that guy from Mythbusters," and being "That guy from Mad Men."
Ya I get people don't want to be typecast as a certain person, but the Mythbusters are singlehandedly responsible for inspiring a lot of kids to become engineers. From other interviews you can tell he's proud of it now, but at the time I could see being hesitant about being shoehorned into that role for his career.
I was just chatting with a friend the other day and I was making a reference to something about Adam, and she didn't get the reference. So I tried to remind her that he was on Mythbusters, and she didn't know what I was talking about. I found that interesting.
Oof, I get what you mean, really I do, but calling it "the most important TV science show of this century" when there's still 75+ years of it left just seems wrong on a fundamental level... I struggle to imagine what could be more important, but still, there's way too much century left to say anything for certain. Absolutely the most important TV science show of the turn of the millennium and at least a few decades since.
Was he miss Grant? Oh I didn't know that 😳 😅 Things get more confusing every day 😕 Can we get a show or movie 🎬 made without somebody dying? Can we complete the job just once without tradjety?
How small a town did I grow up in? The county phone book, including yellow pages was about 3/8 an inch thick. The first phone book I ever held more than an inch thick was when I visited NYC in 1978.
The look in Adam's eyes when he started to recall the Grant story made me teary-eyed 😢 you can tell how special their relationship was, and for me, just as a fan and viewer, I have such fond memories of Grant on the show, interacting with Adam. He was amazing.
When 'Zoob' first came out, I was the primary toy-tester and reviewer for their NZ importer. The Zoob toys helped me to reconnect with my Aspie sons and also really lit-up my Inner Engineer as I looked at all the little details that came together to make such an awesome 'construction toy'. I never knew you had a hand in it, but hearing that you did was no big surprise after seeing all the crazy but amazing contractions you and the MB team built. I want to say THANK YOU for creating such an amazing 'toy' - it literally helped me to save my relationship with my sons.
Is it a true friendship if it's never tested over disagreements sometimes. Some would say if you surround your self with people that always completely agree with you, that's not a friendship, it's a echo chamber. Also r.i.p. Grant
Being known as "that guy from that show" is a form of typecasting, which is something I think most actors don't like. If time goes by, and you're still "that guy from that show", it usually means that you couldn't advance with your career, that you got stuck (of course, I'm talking about an acting career, I can't extrapolate that reasoning to other artistic endeavours)

grant imahara was such a large impact on how i viewed things and i grew up admiring him and you guys in general and im grateful to have had mythbusters to grow up warching
Grant was such a great part of the show, his personality was bright and bubbly, and he had so much to teach the younger generations about robotics, electronics, you name it. He will be missed. A bright star went out when he passed. I keep the Freevee stream of Mythbusters going some days, there's so much to learn about everything and Grant was a huge part of it. Knowledge lost is terrible.
One of my friends has a special needs son who loves Mythbusters and Grant in particular. They went to an event with Grant and his team(years ago, obviously), and Grant was incredibly kind and understanding of his special quirks. Grant's team was very accommodating, and went well out of their way, above and beyond, to make sure it was a special day for my friend's son. They didn't have to do that at all, it was purely because they wanted to make a little boy happy. Made a huge impact in that boy's life, and speaks to the kind of people Grant surrounded himself with. Grant, you're missed.
Adam, to me you are and always will be Adam Savage from Mythbusters. Please don't be ashamed of that. I'm sure I speak for many others when I say Mythbusters was a large part of my childhood and young adult life.
This is such a great story and while I never knew Grant personally he seemed like such a smart, passionate, and impactful person. Whenever I heard you two doing the "Doctor" "Doctor" it reminded me of the bit between Dan Akroyd and Chevy Chase in Spies Like Us
Mr Savage you are truly awesome. Mythbusters was by far my favorite show growing up. Living in small town Greece as a teenager I will admit our pyromania was inspired by the show. Thank you for your contribution truly.
There are a lot of jobs like that. A construction worker, for example a house framer, does a quick and efficient job. Once the job is done, now you're out of work. You have to be constantly looking for your next job.
The movie called Spies Like Us has a funny scene where they call each other doctor. I always thought you and Grant were quoting it. Fun to hear the backstory
Grant was amazing. when he presented he had such a calm presence about him yet you could see the excitement and joy at the same time. Wonderful to watch. the show wouldn't have been the same without him

10:20 I thought it was from movie “spies like us” great movie with Chevy Chase and Dan Akroid. And in the on scene they kept saying “doctor, doctor. Nod doctor, doctor, doctor”
While you'll always be "that guy from Mythbusters", I'm happy to see that you haven't plateaued, looking back on your better days. IMO, a sign of good mental health is to be always looking forward, and that trait is why we all respect you and enjoy seeing what you're up to.
Came for any story about Grant, but deeply enjoyed the reminder of the phonebook episode - I remember that being an absolute shock to my younger self!! And it's still astonishing how it do. The world is a wild place.
Here i thought it would be "Spies Like Us" reference. A Chevy Chase-Dan Acroyd number about some fools that accidentally become spies. The bit, (spoiler i guess) there's a tent full of doctors, and for a solid minute, the fools and doctors greet eachother with doctor. Comedy rating of "4 Leslie Neilson's"
That's probably the true origin. Adam may have forgotten that part of the movie and where it came from. That's just too classic of a movie to not know the reference.
By the way, the submitter of the question, Righteous Robot, has a UA-cam channel where he did a stop-motion animation film called Gruff that is absolutely worth checking out, as well as a slew of shorts going over the entire creative process for tricky scenes, trial and error and the decisions that followed.
Also loved the phonebook episode! (funny how worried we are about privacy these days, when we used to print and distribute a book containing almost everyones name address and ph numbers 😂 ) Grant stories are always a great reminder of so likable the guy we all miss :/
It’s really cool to hear you were part of Zoob. I loved playing with Zoobs as a kid. Circa 2001 when I was 4yo, my mom and I took a trip to SF and we got some zoobs there that I played with for many years and do still have as well
A noteable portion of Jaques Littlefield's tank collection is now part of the American Heritage Museum, here in Hudson, MA. You can even get tickets to ride, and drive, some of the tanks. It's pretty wild.
When I'm talking about you/describing you to someone that isn't a super fan like me . . . I say, "The younger bouncier MythBuster" and they always know the difference. :-) Clicked past the show just yesterday. Grant was on. Had to keep moving. Too sad. He is missed.
5:38 As someone who is currently unemployed I completely relate to this. I probably log more hours working on my portfolio/applying/interviewing/networking now than when I was working full time.
"Just this little thing called Mythbusters." -- one of THE Mythbuster guys. You are more than that now and I'll always remember you from that show. It was iconic. Also, I got unexpectedly emotional at your story about Grant. It's always those little things that get you the hardest.
10:54 ❤ There is nothing quite like the feeling of having someone that you see the spark and light in that you respect, turn to you and acknowledge that they see that same spark and light in yourself. Well done, Doctor. ❤
I lost family members during the Pandemic, and having watched Mythbusters all of my teen years, when I heard about Grant's passing it hurt just as much as it he was part of my family. It hurts me today hearing how much your voice crack ever so slightly when the good memories come back. It's an understatement that he was a dear friend. A hug from way far, Adam.
Intrigued by your Matrix/Treasure Island comment, I looked up when it was no longer a military base. 1997, apparently. My wife and I lived there on Sturgeon street for nearly 4 years while in the navy. We were there for the Loma Prieta earthquake in '89 - had to ride a tug boat to work in Alameda for a month due to the bridge collapse. We also were there for the Oakland Firestorm in '91. I was working on hobby stuff in the garage when the light through the door seemed to dim. Outside, the smoke was rising and began to block the sun. Crazy. We were the first tenants in our apartment, so it was all fresh and new at the time. I looked at Google street view just now. It looks sadly old and worn. I suppose I do too.
I never saw that as a base, but close timing. I was stationed at Coast Guard Island at the end of '99 and lived in base housing near the gate of NAS Alameda. I was there when they were filming the Matrix movies.
The doctor bit is something ive actually carried into my adult life at 26 years old from watching the show. I lovingly greet some friends as doctor and they return it
Self employment is tough but can be satisfying. If you can't find work you don't eat. Then there's insurance. Get a great accountant. You're constantly looking for work so business is always on your mind. It's hard to walk away from work when Friday rolls around.
Things that seemed like a magic trick, by decade... 2000s Ripping a phone book in half. 2010s Finding a phone book. 2020s Convincing a child phone books ever existed.
Doctor, doctor, doctor was a line in the movie “Spies like Us”. From the scene where the other characters think Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd are doctors
The term freelancer is commonly attributed to Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) in Ivanhoe (1820) to describe a "medieval mercenary warrior" or "free-lance" (indicating that the lance is not sworn to any lord's services, not that the lance is available free of charge).
I thought that came from the “Spies Like Us” (1985) Doctor scene with Bob Hope. Me and my brother always make that gag when we have no clue what we are doing but still try and act like professionals! 😂
I miss Grant! Myth Busters started airing when I was in high school and already super interested in electronics and engineering. I tried twice to earn an engineering degree, but through the work experience engineering students do I found that the degree holders usually aren't doing what I wanted to do, and I didn't want to have to keep up with courses and ongoing quotas of seminars to maintain a piece of paper that would make me overqualified for what I thought was fun. Fast forward two decades and somehow I've ended up in finance? But I got my current role because the CFO was looking for someone who can persuade NetSuite to do whatever he wants, which is possible if you're a confident JavaScript developer, and that's one of the many things I am... 😅 I constantly feel underqualified for my actual job because I did the education for it so late compared to my coworkers and my "this one time back when I was 20" stories are from unrelated work, but I've done a LOT of things getting to where I am. The blessing and curse of being a smart, creative person in a world that praises putting your head down and doing the same thing until you're 60.
i absolutely adored mythbusters i still watch episodes today, but i love tested & seeing what everyone does now, i miss Grant he was just such an amazing person! ❤
I stage-managed a play at university, and one of the cast was a visiting professor. The head of the drama department had a doctorate of fine arts from Stanford. We had just finished the last show of our run, and the cast was doing their meet-and-greets. The department head walks up and a conversation begins: "Great work, Professor!" "Thank you, Doctor!"
Back in my BattleBot days (Cleprechaun), I met Grant before Myth Busters. I don’t normally remember strangers 10 seconds after meeting them, but Grant was so friendly I remembered him when I first watched Myth Busters.
That's cute 🥺 I think of Grant SO often 💔 A friend of mine and I call each other doctor too! He's a playwright/director and I'm a filmschool dropout, neither of us is a doctor of any kind, lol.
My son and I did the phonebook trick about 15 years ago. Of course it worked. :) At the time, It didn't occur to me in the slightest that there'd be a time without telephone directories. A bit like friends, I guess. RIP Grant, and thank you for all the fun you added to the world. :)
Yeah just got latest Adelaide phone book it's comical how small it is now given that back in the day it was 3 really fat books one white pages Domestic numbers and 2 yellow pages or business numbers the latest one was maybe 1 cm thick with both white and yellow pages combined
I was watching a Mythbusters episode earlier and the topic was “perception”. Grant was a test subject and Adam was disguised as Jamie. Grant’s sudden realization - when Adam removes his mask - results in the best hysterical laughter and he involuntarily hops around 😂. What a legend! 🙌🏼
I went to one of those Mythbusters tours when they were in Salt Lake. The ladies who were weaving the phone books together was one of the bits I most clearly remember. Adam was surprised at how quickly that pair weaved the pages together, citing that was the fastest he had seen anyone do it. He also commented about how Jaime lowered him at a different rate every show.
I remember seeing the phone book episode and then waiting for the free small phonebooks they would leave at the street, my brothers and I delighted in trying to pull them apart after lacing them together.
When you talk about the doctor, doctor greeting, I instantly think of Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd in Spies like Us. They have a fantastic scene where they also call everybody doctor. 🙂
4:30 Whelp... For what it's worth, I respect that you're not *just* that guy from Mythbusters. But I also think that you're that guy from my childhood, in a wonderful way that inspires me to think critically and be creative.

It was 8,000 pounds of force to separate the phone books, in that episode you mentioned that you could've hang the two cars you used from them
The brackets broke instead.
@@Leonrey-ic1whThe wooden brackets broke, they built more substantial ones before they did the tank test
Comedy rating of "4 Leslie Neilson's"
same
That's probably the true origin.
(funny how worried we are about privacy these days, when we used to print and distribute a book containing almost everyones name address and ph numbers 😂 )
Grant stories are always a great reminder of so likable the guy we all miss :/
I live for the contagious warm smile that Adam shows whenever he begins a Grant story.
It’s really cool to hear you were part of Zoob. I loved playing with Zoobs as a kid. Circa 2001 when I was 4yo, my mom and I took a trip to SF and we got some zoobs there that I played with for many years and do still have as well
here i was hoping there was a "Spies Like Us" connection... Miss grant, and can tell you do dearly. Thanks for sharing!
I need to say Adam seems to always have a pleasant demeanor and I always come out in a better mood listening to Adam's stories.
Grant inspired me so much as a kid
Its super heartwarming hearing that story! Even if youbgiys weren't on the best terms still having that respect is so special.
A noteable portion of Jaques Littlefield's tank collection is now part of the American Heritage Museum, here in Hudson, MA. You can even get tickets to ride, and drive, some of the tanks. It's pretty wild.
You don't say ? 😅
Thank you for myth busters, it gave me something to look forward too in a bad life
When I'm talking about you/describing you to someone that isn't a super fan like me . .
Loved what Grant added to the show and feel a kindred spirit to his personality and work methods. Gone way too young.
Funny, I always thought you guys were riffing on a scene from Spies Like Us.
Love you show all off them
The doctor bit is something ive actually carried into my adult life at 26 years old from watching the show. I lovingly greet some friends as doctor and they return it
I miss and think of Grant surprisingly often, since I know him only as a fan would and not a close friend. Profound person, deep loss keenly felt.
Grant was one of a kind. So, so smart, funny, kind, curious. Gone too soon.
Self employment is tough but can be satisfying. If you can't find work you don't eat. Then there's insurance. Get a great accountant. You're constantly looking for work so business is always on your mind. It's hard to walk away from work when Friday rolls around.
Isn't the round table "Doctor. Doctor. Doctor. Doctor. Doctor. " from Spies like Us?
It's still a sign of respect, but it's comedy gold as a gag.
Good, it's not just me that took it that way!
Things that seemed like a magic trick, by decade...
2000s Ripping a phone book in half.
2010s Finding a phone book.
2020s Convincing a child phone books ever existed.
I always thought the doctor reference was dual purpose... respect and the "spies like us" reference with Chevy chase, Dan ankroid, terry gilliam
Doctor, doctor, doctor was a line in the movie “Spies like Us”. From the scene where the other characters think Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd are doctors
For me it was "K-PAX". Doctor, doctor. Doctor, doctor. A lot of doctors on this planet....
Grant always brought an energy to the particular myth being tested. He was taken way, way too soon.May he rest in peace.
You were part of Zoobs in the 90's!? I had Zoobs in the early 2000's! That's really awesome to find out. I loved those toys as a kid.
Nice story. I had assumed you both were quoting "Spies like us" but nice to see it was more personal.
From Bill Nye to Adam and Jamie, I'll always be appreciated if the engineering put on TV and now UA-cam.
Wouldn't be where I am without it.
Meeting Grant by chance in SF was a highlight. So creative, and a terrific problem solver. And the creator of Geoff Peterson. 💀🤖
I love seeing Adam talk about Grant with a big smile. 😊❤
I stage-managed a play at university, and one of the cast was a visiting professor. The head of the drama department had a doctorate of fine arts from Stanford. We had just finished the last show of our run, and the cast was doing their meet-and-greets. The department head walks up and a conversation begins:
"Great work, Professor!"
"Thank you, Doctor!"
I figured the Doctor thing was a gag from the movie Spies Like Us.
Back in my BattleBot days (Cleprechaun), I met Grant before Myth Busters. I don’t normally remember strangers 10 seconds after meeting them, but Grant was so friendly I remembered him when I first watched Myth Busters.
i do believe watching your chanel makes me a better person thanks!
What a lovely thing to say - thank you!
@ of course !
Love Righteous Robot and LOVE Grant stories!!!
That's cute 🥺 I think of Grant SO often 💔 A friend of mine and I call each other doctor too! He's a playwright/director and I'm a filmschool dropout, neither of us is a doctor of any kind, lol.
The bulk of the Littlefield collection is in Hudson MA now. Great museum.
Good lord you can see the memories come flooding back with that last question.
Love this one. Specially since the McMaster catalog was my daughter's booster seat to help us all build n do life
My son and I did the phonebook trick about 15 years ago. Of course it worked. :)
At the time, It didn't occur to me in the slightest that there'd be a time without telephone directories.
I remember me and my dad watching the show together anytime it was on tv it was our favorite show to tune into good memories
You can see the fondness in Adam's eyes when he talks about Grant.
4:30 Whelp... For what it's worth, I respect that you're not *just* that guy from Mythbusters. But I also think that you're that guy from my childhood, in a wonderful way that inspires me to think critically and be creative.
You know I've been watching (too many of) these videos from the recommendation page for a couple of months now and only just realized that I wasn't subscribed until now
