I often wonder if there is any future for so-called “classical” music in Western countries when I witness ever older audiences but brilliant young talent like this gives me hope. It seems a paradox that audiences are getting older and the musicians, not just soloists but orchestras as well, are getting younger
Shostakovich sounds too french, also there were some mistakes in text, cannot believe jury didn't see that....disappointed of Quin Elizabeth competition...the cellist is not bad but this is not a first prize level ...
The 2017 jury were: Gautier Capuçon, Marta Casals Istomin, Henri Demarquette, Roel Dieltiens, David Geringas, Natalia Gutman, Marie Hallynck, Frans Helmerson, Gary Hoffman, Anssi Karttunen, Mischa Maisky, Antonio Meneses, Truls Mørk, Jian Wang, Pieter Wispelwey and Arie Van Lysebeth (jury chair). I think they are experienced enough to know what they want!!! You can't always tell from recordings. The balance in this recording is nowhere near as good as Santiago's Elgar. Plus the result may be based on more than just the final. Whether or not you like it it is still a great performance!
@@CarolHaynesJ I've met and had masterclasses with a few of the cellists that were part of the jury and most of them were pretty nice people, i actually managed to talk with one of them in a bbq a few years back and they said that 1/3 of the jury didnt want santiago winning because his career was already flying high at the time and he was also very young at the time. I kinda understand why they did that, imagine playing an instrument for more than 30 years, then a kid from colombia comes out of nowhere and starts to get invitations to play with huge orchestras and stuff
I'm so glad someone reuploaded this rendition! The previous version was removed due to copyright...
