    Hi Andy! Not sure if you're seeing these comments or not. I immediately recognized this machine as my mother's sewing machine when I was growing up. Strange how that visual was locked in my brain all these years. At some point she replaced it with an, at that time, fancy, Futura (this was in the late 70s). When she died a few years ago I was initially wanting that machine but fortunately did an online search and quickly realized what a headache the 70s era machines were. So I settled on the newer model she had just recently bought before she died. That of course, being a modern plastic piece of junk, lasted all of about 6 months, if that. I then switched to a Janome which while a vast improvement, still feels a bit too bells and whistlely. Then a few days ago in the thrift store I ran into a Singer 404. I didn't know anything about the 404 but recognized it as an old heavy duty style machine and took it home. And that's when I discovered the tremendously generous gift of your videos. I've cleaned it up, oiled and greased it and basically just got to know the machine. It runs surprisingly well and working on it top to bottom makes me appreciate the glories of it all the more! The craziest thing is I picked it up for about $20!!
    Anyway I have joined the ranks of your enormously grateful fans who’ve benefited greatly by your knowledge and generosity. I love knowing I'm working on a machine my mom would have appreciated!
    All good blessings to you and yours! This quilter in Washington DC will forever be grateful! 😊

      A magnificent machine for a miserly price! I'm so happy you came across it and brought it home. Thank you for keeping it in service. You'll enjoy it for decades to come. Your Mom's 328K came out in 1963, the same year Singer stopped making the 404 and transitioned to the 500A & 503A "Rocketeers". Model 404 was underappreciated IMO, b/c ZigZag was the new "thing". Model 328K was a good choice for your Mom and was less costly than the Slant Needle Machines. I'm sure she enjoyed creating with it. Your comment made my day and I appreciate your time leaving it for me. Happy Quilting.

      Thank you, Jim. I did not get any accessories with the machine, just the one presser foot. This model used the Type "A" fashion or Pattern Discs, commonly called "flat". There were about 8 discs in the box plus the ZZ disc #1 in the machine. There are 30+ discs. For those interested here is a nice page about the discs and patterns: www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/pattern_cam_list Prior to the COVID Pandemic I could buy them for about $1 each, but now they are a lot more $$ (like everything else, right?)

    Hi, Andy. The other day, I was trying to put an LED light in my 327K and 328K. I found out the bulbs I had purchased did not fit! These bulbs that I had, fit quite well into all my other machines (301A, 401A, 403A, 404, 500A, 503A). Well, I knew you had put an LED light in your 328K here, and I noticed you purchased it from the Featherweight Shop. I had bought one from the Shop and had it in my 404. I swapped them out. And the Featherweight bulb fit in my 327K and 328K! I went to their website, and they said they had worked with the manufacturer of these bulbs to make it fit the Featherweights. A Featherweight light socket must have a similar shape to the 327K and 328K. It’s so nice to have LEDs in my 327K and 328K! Merry Christmas, Andy. I’m re-enjoying your videos here on the 328K.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  10 місяців тому

      I'm glad it works for you. For a couple of years now I've noticed a few sellers of bulbs posting a disclaimer on the ad for the bulbs ""This bulb may require modification. You may need to sand the bottom of the base down slightly for it to fit."" I wonder if some makers shut down due to COVID or something. The base size of the 221 is the same as the 327 and 404, etc. I think. Where I had trouble in the past was with bulbs that had a "stepped out" base at the top of the metal area. Some of those would not fit well. I noticed that the FWS LED bulb was smooth-sided all the way to the silicone part. Other bulbs seemed like the soldering of the two contacts on the bottom stuck out too far. I felt that prevented the two pins from aligning with the slots of the bulb holder. Maybe that's why some sellers suggest sanding the bottom down? I just imagine Singer specs for the base size included the contacts on the bottom and the new makers made the metal part that long and forgot that the pins stick out. Man, that's the most I ever thought about LED bulbs, haha. Yes, thank you, and a very Merry Christmas with a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year 2024.

    Andy thank you for all your video's. I am currently working on this machine and slowly struggling along. Your videos have been invaluable. I was able to follow your video's along in refurbishing the foot pedal and it is working soo much better now. But unfortunately the machine is still too stiff for the motor. Will continue to plod along.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  9 місяців тому +1

      You're welcome. In this model, stiffness can be caused by a couple of things.
      If the machine sat idle for years/decades the oil in the moving parts dries up and can even act like glue and also be thick and sticky. Often proper oiling using sewing machine oil will "thin" the old oil and allow for movement. It can take 2 or 3 good oilings and running the machine in between them.
      The Singer repairmen would drip kerosene into the oil points and run the machine for 5 minutes, then wipe off everything and start applying new oil to flush out the kerosene.
      The other binding cause can be a too-tight motor melt. The motor belt can easily be adjusted for tension and even slipped off the motor pulley if needed to see how it feels to turn the handwheel without it.
      If the belt is very loose or off and the handwheel turns a lot easier then the belt was too tight. If the machine still turns very stiffly that indicates the old oil problem. Plod with a plan + less frustrating.😉
      There is also a chance (rare) that the needle bar was bent badly or the machine was dropped and a shaft was bent.

    These simple, easy-to-operate machines sew a wide range of fabrics, especially heavier ones, really well. Of course, plain sewers like the S 201 and S 301 do a somewhat better straight stitch than these, but that applies to most swing-needle machines.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for watching and I agree with the points you brought up. It's interesting that a lot of these swing needle machines came with a second needle plate made for straight stitching with just the little hole and when I've used that on the zigzag machines and even the 401a 403a and the rocketeers, it makes a nicer straight stitch because the fabric can't flex like it does with the zigzag presser foot, but I don't think a lot of people realize that. I appreciate your thoughtful comment

    Hey Andy, your videos have been really helpful for diagnosing a few problems with my singer 503. I have a question maybe you could help with. There is a point in the revolution of the machine that has some friction. I’ve oiled all the points recommended with tri flow and greased the all the gears as far as I know how to. I know it’s on the top shaft somewhere because the bottom drive rotates twice for every rotation of the hand wheel, from what I can observe at lease. Do you have any tips on chasing down the cause of a friction point? Or any common areas that might have corrosion or abrasions of some sort? Thanks so much.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  7 місяців тому

      I've had a small number of machines like this. I eventually found that the hinge stud anchoring the takeup lever to the body was inserted very tightly when the set screw was installed. Each time the takeup lever reached a certain spot in the rotation it would hesitate or bind for a split-second. This video of a 503A shows the removal and replacement of the takeup lever parts, but you may just need to loosen the set screw for the stud and retighten it while turning the handwheel. I mention the binding around 22:00 into the video. ua-cam.com/video/7-3Cr9neZTc/v-deo.html Of course many things can cause binding on a sewing machine. The takeup lever is No. 10 of 24 possible causes of binding listed on page 44 of the Service Manual that you can download for free from the sewing dude at this link: sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-500-service-manual.pdf

    • @andytubesewing1953

      Buy one spool of better thread to see if it is really the Walmart thread. Maybe it's something else causing the "Barfs". They sure sell a lot of thread so if was that bad I don't think they would sell so much of it. IDK.. Try a new/better needle. I like Top Stich Needles b/c the eye is larger. If wrong sized needle is used, or the eye is too small it creates problems. Double check the threading path to be sure it's correct.

    • @meganmills6545
      @meganmills6545 11 місяців тому

      Many years ago when my Mum sewed on an industrial machine they had a little block of something (a thread conditioner of some sort) that the thread passed over. She said it stopped thread "misbehaving". I wonder if getting hold of whatever the modern equivalent is now would be helpful if Andy's suggestions don't help... (When she wound bobbins she ran the thread over it for that too - so both the bobbin and top threads ended up "conditioned".) I'm not sure why the thread wanted to misbehave in the first place (higher speeds on the industrial?) but if it helped on an industrial it might help on a domestic.
