Why are you advertising a service that does not ship to the UK? - that obviously means that you didn't use the service while you are in the UK right now...
Should have used a big wide scraper hard enough to scrape gold but not the steel around it.
So alec you can shape steel but are you ever going to make a little Steele?😉😉
Milkin this content tho
I like the idea of Bespoke Post but honestly the Bag is really the only thing that I think is really worth it and that is at the discounted rate. Otherwise I think their stuff is just overpriced and not that exciting. It’s a fun gift for someone though
I feel like just throwing in a "Mrs Steele is going to fix it for me, I'm going to play with the dogs." In every episode would make your projects go A LOT quicker.
All of these replies are garb
@@Mikki-Media its spam
There should be a "Mrs. Steele is going to fix it for me" shirt
Every time I see how hard this is with modern tools it makes it more and more stunning that someone did this kind of thing with ONLY medieval or even bronze-age tools 4000+ years ago
theyd do it over the course of months though, Alec can do it in weeks if hed wanted to.
@@BartJBols true but I can’t even imagine doing that same piece in a lifetime with the same tools, imma need like 6 if I’m using medieval stuff lmao likely I’d just give up and be a farmer or something for at least 3 of those
You have to account for the fact that humans have incredible fine motor control with practice, doing it by hand after so long would be infinitely more controllable than the mechanical tool Alec uses, since it has a constant internal motor, the slightest slip can run into a whole line of ripped up or damaged material, when done by hand you can readjust both tools by minute increments, it's the same with a powerhammer really, it's just the natural downside of powered tools of all kinds
I’ve thought this a few times, the time it takes, the precision tools but most of all the minute detail they did back then. Utterly astounding.
Medieval peoples specialized labor to a greater degree than we give them credit for.
The true test of "hand made" is the beauty of imperfections. If people wanted flawless, you'd have opted for CNC assisted micro milling of the design. The way you're doing it is more skilful and you'll learn more.
Thats what I was going to say but not in so many words lol
When your said your wife was going to fix your mistake, I didn't realize she had the experience or skills! So much we don't know, and beyond impressive!!
Oh yeah!!
I didn't even know he was married
@@Stormageddon571 lol...how long have you been watching him?
@@FlinnGaidin since he made the sword for How Ridiculous
No kidding! She needs to be featured more!
Well you are doin it! It’s so weird to see your approach being so different then Ilya’s.
Holy..... how people aint give attention to this comment...
Alec pointing out all the "problems" makes me like it more, it just goes to show that it's a hand made piece and that you're not a complete robot, basically Alec don't be so hard on yourself
The flaws make it look like a real scimitar. Medieval craftsmen didn’t care much for perfect symmetry, and minor flaws were expected. Especially with floral designs, a perfect design looms machine made. slight variations make sit look more natural.
Not only that, but he's not too proud to point out his mistakes. A very good personality trait for sure.
A rare sighting of Mrs. Steele! And an engraver in her own right! Thank you for helping Alec in his work!
Who?
@@Tosti3 Alec's wife.
@@MurkyWaters677 Think he meant who is Alex, lol.
@@Tosti3 Feck, I'm always doing that.
@@ronwingrove683 Haha, no worries bro
I'm just waiting for the moment he finishes the inlay, comments about how beautiful it is, then pulls it out and remembers he has another side to do.
So true
for some weird reason I remembered this comment just now when I watched Alec finish the other side, he never said the other side would be matching did he 🤣
Pretty sure that's the closest we've ever come to actually seeing Mrs. Steele. LOL!
That engraving is starting to look very impressive!
Nah, there is quick glimpse of her in an old Montana video that's not blurred.
Which video?
power hammer restoration video
@@dragonwing4ever the painting one?
In the next episode… Alec attempts to convince Mrs. Steele to take over the blade grinding portion of the project.
But seriously.. always nice to see Mrs Steele involved in the shop!
I respect that Mrs Steele doesn't want to be on camera but damn having her show up in this video piqued my interest
Fascinated to know what Mrs Steele does that she can fix your engraving.... we're all so nosy 😂 another great episode! Excited to see how this will turn out!
Hey Alec, wanted to suggest you having a look at how a goldsmith's workbench looks like. They have a half circle cut into the table and a leather can be fixed underneath the table to lay on your legs and catch any falling dust or shavings from the workpiece. It should pay of rather quickly when working with gold.
Really enjoying a long build again! Keep it up!
I was having a difficult poop when i saw this video in my feed, and Alec's face in the thumbnail really resonated with me 😂
“Mrs. Steele’s going to fix it for me. I’m going to go play with the dogs.”
This is what I do every time life gets too difficult. Wives are great. 😂
"Toodle pip", that is the most British thing I have heard you say in forever ... and I LOVE IT!
I also love it, but what does it mean?
@@TiagoSilva-dq8dm it quite simply means goodbye.
When I watch these videos and see the level of expertise needed in the fine detail work I feel like I am witnessing an endless battle between "Nothing ventured, nothing gained" and "The enemy of good is better".
"I'll get Mrs. Steele to fix it for me" could definitely become a running gag.
Alec seems so happy. Mrs Steele must be a keeper. Crocs and shorts in the workshop??? Our boys in loooove 💕
The Filming. The camera angles. The Cinematic Views. The Editing. The Close Ups. The music. Truly Breathtaking Work... p.s. crocks are great 👍
Utterly fantastic work, Alec. Faced with the edge of the chisel digging in to my workpiece, I made a chise with a round bottom. This still slices the stuff out, but less chance of digging in
Alec. Watching you do this gives me a whole new respect for inlays and I didn’t have to do the work. You also deserve a lot of credit for showing the issues you had along with the fixes for them. Hats off to you! 👍👍👍👍
As an Iranian, I was really surprised that after 600 years, someone was able to make an Iranian sword, but my friend, you started hard work, but the protector of the Iranian sword handle is several pieces and sticks together with some kind of glue.❤️❤️
Every time it cuts into a montage my entire body tenses up, waiting for the "AAAARGH MY HAND SLIPPED" 😂
A quick plug for Bespoke Post from a non-Alec person: I have been subscribed to them for years and never regretted it. Amazing customer service if something goes wrong (which is rare) and their holiday deals are super great for Christmas.
Alex, you and Mrs. Steele have done delightful work on the gold inlay!!!
This is amazing, its so interesting to see you reveal the beautiful lines of the inlay with the stones. I would love to be able to do this
Alec "we haven't done a 30 part series in a while" makes 4 episode just on engraving and placing gold....
When he said that, then had the blade and pre-engraving hand guard done in like 2 eps, I was like…umm..30? But I now see what he meant.
4 episodes so far.
Really good stuff. I’ve said it before showing how to rectify faults is more valuable than just showing how it goes right.
I'm an amateur knife maker and I remember making my second knife. I wanted to make a giant, 14 inch blade but I kept making mistakes. After the first big mistake, it became a 12 inch knife. Then a 9 inch, 8, 7, and finally it became a 6 inch knife. When doing subtractive craftsmanship, it sometimes becomes necessary to adjust your plans while making something. The key is to just pretend that the finished project was the original plan
I like Mrs Steele’s (and yours) appreciation of privacy.
What I find most inspirational about this series and many of your other videos is that you are eager to have a go at something that might prove to be far trickier than you first thought. Whether bludgeoning with the power-hammer or edging along at a microscopic level, you are determined to go at it and make it work. It's compelling viewing.
It is awesome that you keep testing your limits on your craftsmanship to see what you can do. Keep it up!
If you used a chisel harder than gold but softer than the steel (maybe bronze?), would you be able to speed removal because you would have to worry about damaging the base steel?
I dont think there are chisels made of bronze. I think it would be too soft and become dull too fast
@@raik8243 not anymore but Alec is competent at casting and chisels are easy to make
Interesting. Theoretically, I don't see why not. Just don't chip the bronze.
I don't think it works like that. He could use low carbon steel even, but the tool would just desintegrate too fast.
You would be honing your tool to often to be worth it
I love these engraving videos! Appreciate the detail work
Jeweler here! Not an experienced engraver, but I think making your border cuts deeper will make the effect your looking for pop a lot more!
Omg that looks amazing. Good job! 👍
What a piece of a hand crafted gem! 💎
Love it!!
Looks absolutely amazingly beautiful after your stone work!!!
This is gonna be like 15k sword by the end of this! This is so impressive to watch the skill and detail of it all! Can’t wait for the next one.
I have learned over the past few weeks that engraving would drive me absolutely insane.
This mans accent makes watching his videos more enjoyable.
Love the work but honestly the best thing in this video is the incredible relief at knowing your wife is with you in the UK. I kept thinking you hadn’t mentioned her in a while and you were COVID stranded. I didn’t realize how invested I was in this!
Awesome work Alec thank you for taking us along on this adventure
Those are the most British crocs I’ve ever seen😂😂 love from Texas across the pond. Hope to make it over one day!
I have that same weekender bag, love it. I use it every time I travel
To have maker skills to get to this point in any project is spectacular.
Your patience is incredible I probably would have melted it down great work Sir 👍👏
Love all the callbacks to the old Viking Sword.
Can’t wait to see the finished product
You are killing it on this build Alec. I'm always impressed with your attention to detail. Really glad you decided to go for 20 part series for this build 😉
I discovered this Channel a couple years ago, then left, then rejoined. This craftmenship learning is always good
Same used to watch him a long time ago but my account got banned and forgot I was subbed to him
Crocs and socks!!! I wear this combo also, keeps my feet warm but is easy to get on and off (wheelchair user so this is important)
Welcome Mrs Steele. Let's show her our support. Maybe we will see more of her. Think it could be fun.
Honestly amazed at the amount of detail you put into this!
Im not an engraver but I do paint on that scale. Alec talks about not moving your body being hard but the trick is Isolating you hands from your body not trying to hold your. I use an armrest between me and the work lend my chest in to and my upper arms on it really helps take your breathing out of your hands and is much less stressful over time.
That’s awesome! I sooo want to try black smithing one day!
You're always improving your skills, and some mistakes happens but thats growth. You're a great artist, its becaming beautiful
Recent subscriber and love your craftsmanship and attention to detail. Especially enjoying this build because sword…
Beautiful work as always Alec
Keep pushing forward mate. You will be able to make the final finish something that you are proud of.
Great to see a other video on this very awesome project. looking very cool. keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work. cant wait to see more. forge on. keep making. god bless.
Thank goodness for Madame Steele! It's coming around very nicely now! Looking forward to seeing it finished out... don't. Repeat. The sword breaker.
Wow, that is beautiful!
Nice work sir , nice to see two videos so fast !!
Just bought your 2x72! Excited for the arrival
2:55 I love the blur. Some people want to know the back story and all the characters, but don't ever be pressured into relinquishing your or your family's privacy!
Yaaay we finally got to meet Mrs. Steele!!!
Really nice work Alec
For starters, Im glad you are back to series projects. And 2 for the bespoke post pitch I say, dont get between a British fellow and his satchel/ bag.
Your current piece is looking awesome
One thing someone told me that works pretty well," mistakes are always to be made but if we always call them a mistake people will only see them as that and not the strengths beneath." I don't know why I decided to comment this but when he started pointing out the mistakes that's what it reminded me of.
Really enjoying this thus tar
so convenient for you to have had the bespoke boxes there just perfect for a break
This is awesome! Finally a good ol' Alec Steele project as they should be 😊
Alec, that work is imperfectly perfect! I was pretty skeptical at the start, but this is beautiful work!
Please try forging some inconel . Think it would be a good challenge. Love the content 👍🏻
I do not know if it is more satisfactory to see how you do the sword or how you advertise the sponsor of the day...
Great video as always!
Thanks for sharing !
This video just made me love this man even more. Feeling those crocs, my dude
As a gold smith my advice would to definitely youse push graver, even one without a heal
Nice to see a brief cameo of your wife, we see so little of her.
This guard is coming along so well, now to do the other side. Lol. And the blade should have at least some etching on it.
I have sooooo much more respect for the art of engraving now that I have watched this series... The time and effort is ridiculous! As someone who has seen engraved pieces and thought, 'That's pretty' I now will look at engraved things and say 'Oh my Lord, How long did that take to do??' :)
Your doing really good cant wait to see you do the other side
For the power hammer, you can use paint remover paste, and rust remover paste. Brush PR paste on, leave it for a few hours, wash it off. Same with the RR paste. Then either oil it and leave as is, or repaint it however you like.
These videos are too short! I need more Alec Steele!
always love a good alec steele video :D
Alec Steele really is collaborating with Matt Cremona! They both have got the same sponsor today!
Chisel? Looks like a job for hand sanding to me. Keep up the entertaining work!
The mysterious Mrs Steele! Hello! I always enjoy the stealthy cameos. I hope you are well!
Love your vids Alex, I know that you say/joke that you're not the best/most skillfull but in my eyes you are amazingly talented & will keep getting better with age & practise. Carry on with the great vids as I really enjoy them
Great to see some exposure for the art of engraving. Keep it up, you're doing a great job for a beginner. Looks like you could do with a slightly better edge on your graver, it'll help keep your lines straight. Maybe consider an onglette for cutting borders. I'm sure you have plenty of offers of help but if you need any advice etc.. let me know.
Oh Yeah!!! Thanks Alec!!!
2:51- Now THAT is one brief cameo!
Good Job Mrs. Steele. Us dudes will always be jealous of women's fine motor skills.
Inlay looks killer, bro. Very nice job
... and now the other side?
Shoutout to Mrs. Steele for saving the gold inlay!
Thanks Mrs. Steele.
greatttt work man !!!!
Alec your wife is a legend for fixing that gouge.
Jamie rocking a Seiko 5… class!
