Love watching younger people discovering artists like Janis-she still takes my breath away after 50 years. This is all live-no recording of tracks-just live. Brilliant.
“Cry Baby”. Janis had the ability to sing two notes at the same time (polyphonic overtone singing) and it is quite evident in the opening note in her banger “Cry Baby”. A must see! ❤
Janis wore her soul like a blanket trying to protect her from pain, hurt, anger, & even love! This woman was one of a kind, & sadly missed by everyone who loved & understood her music ❤ 💚 💙 She truly was a gift that was only with us for a short time, but what a glorious time it was!!! Thank you for such a thoughtful reaction ❤ 💚 💙
Hope someone has already pointed out that this song, which has been covered by dozens of artist, was written by George Gershwin in 1934(!) for his groundbreaking musical "Porgy and Bess."
A bit of trivia. The premier production of P&B was Sep. 30, 1935, with Todd Duncan as Porgy. 1955, Todd would be the 1st to sing Unchained Melody (in the 1955 movie, Unchained).
Loved Ira & George Gershwin. "Rhapsody in Blue" probably a favorite. George died in the 30s but Ira kept going...didn't know this song was that old, probably knew at some point, but thanks for the info/trivia!! Rodgers & Hart, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, Rodgers & Hammerstein, etc. Love the old Hollywood musicals and the Gershwins as composers.
She's just from another world. Her soul when singing hits your heart. But her band is often overlooked understandably because of her but they are great too.
I went to Woodstock 1969, yes I'm that old. My friend and I managed to sneak up onstage (it's a long story) while Sly and the Family Stone was performing. The stage was huge and other performers were dancing to Sly including Janis. I looked around and was shocked when I saw her right next to me. She offered me a sip of her Southern Comfort, her favorite drink. That moment was the highlight of my life. I love her so much, my all time favorite. I'm lucky that I grew up with the best music and went to lots of concerts and saw so many of the greats.
I used to drink SoCo & Lime...co-workers at a hi-tec company, I was the assistant basically, tried to drink me under the table without telling me - just buying - and that was a night where I could just not them back...they gave up and told me what they'd been trying to do. Ha ha. My first concert was Dokken and Dio, I think...born in '69. Seems like Monterey was better than Woodstock but they always talk about Woodstock. Memories, huh?
@@Kell-hee-hee-heemost of the bands that were at Monterey were also at Woodstock. It wasn't just about the music, which was great, it was the whole experience. Yeah, I know it was once in a lifetime because the 2nd Woodstock "appeared" to me to kinda suck - wasn't there. I remember, the "Chili Peppers" or "Limp Bizkit (?)" telling girls to throw dirty tampons onto the stage. Yuck.
@@Kell-hee-hee-hee I wasn't at the second Woodstock either. But from what I've seen it was pretty bad. They tried to recreate something that was unique to the culture of that time. I didn't take any bad acid or any acid at all, so I can't speak to that.
I think Janis Joplin's the best female singer of blues/rock that I've ever heard; glad you enjoyed her performance! One of my favorite songs of hers has always been "Me and Bobby McGee". BTW: I love your channel, man - you're informative, articulate, and polite. Keep it rollin'!! 👍 😊
She's a soul singer like no one else ever was very primal. That's Mama Cass from the moma's and the popa's in the crowd with the sunglasses. She was my favorite singer when I was 15
You make Janis sound as good as she is but better words cannot explain her voice. Much love to you brother, this music it tells a lot about a person. Stay safe
The world was not ready for the Blue-eyed gritty gut wrenching beautiful soul. They just weren't ready but she left her mark on this earth away. And boy, did she have some stories to tell us. We heard you Janis, we heard precious spirit. And we still listen and celebrate you.
"Piece of My Heart" was Janis's first hit, and must be her best seller. "Me and Bobbiy McGee" was another big one. In the second case, it's interesting to see what she did with a country song. Much of her popularity, as with many "psychedelic" musicians of the time, was due to albums rather than singles
Welcome to the music of my youth. This is the stuff I was listening to in middle school (junior high). It's great to see the younger generation discover the music of us "old"er folks and appreciate it. 😁
The saddest story I heard was about Janis Joplin being bullied in High School. So she decided to change her life and become a big rock star. She went back to her High School Reunion, and the people who used to ignore her... Still ignored her. It didn't play out the way she imagined. They treated her like dirt when she was a student, and they still treated her like dirt during the reunion. RIP Janis.
Yeah, she took two boyfriends with her to the reunion to stick it in her old classmates' eyes. Turns out they were so provincial they didn't know she was a star. Port Arthur still doesn't accept her.
My favourite female singer. But I can’t listen to ANYTHING by her without tearing up or crying a bit. Her vocals were so true and primal, her life story is so sad, and she was lost to us so early. I first heard her sing when they played a bit of Piece of My Heart on the news the day she died, and just that little snippet electrified me, and I was barely 11 years old. God bless and keep her. My suggestion for a song is A Woman Left Lonely, but only after Piece of My Heart, Cry Baby or Try.
The baroque guitar just melted into the song. I have never heard Summertime like that but it makes sense. This was composed by George Gershwin for his operetta 'Porgy and Bess" Janice's voice can make you cry in this one. Great choice.
There have been a lot of unique and talented singers in this history of music, and Janis is very much at the top of those lists. What an insane talent!

You have to listen to her version of big mama Thornton's ball and chain! She had her big debut at the Monterey festival and did ball and chain live. She was so amazing that she even blew Mama Cass's mind! Mama Cass had a badass voice of her own and sang for The Mamas and the papas.
I have been a Janis fan since her first album was released. I never tire of hearing any of her songs and she still makes hairs on my arm stand. Her and Jimi died very close to each other. So sad, we lost the best then.

Great reaction! Janis Joplin Work Me Lord Live in Stockholm 1969. This is in her top 3 performances, some say # one. I will say that many people sleep on this one or they never came across it. This will blow your mind! Good luck!
Summertime was written by George Gershwin in 1934 for the play PORGY AND BESS. THE SONG HAS MORE COVERS THAN ANY OTHER SONG IN THE WORLD! It has OVER 20 THOUSAND COVERS, yes, thousands. But Janis is my favorite.
Boston!: "Smokin'," "Foreplay/Long Time," "Hitch a Ride," "Peace of Mind," "Something About You," "Amanda," "Rock & Roll Band," "Let Me Take You Home Tonight," "Party" & "We're Ready."
Please, from this same concert in Stockholm, do Work Me Lord. Lyrics: "I know I'm not some kind of special person down here. But no one has tried like I tried..." Really gets a person in their feels.
She was hitting it hard during the psychedelic period. I lived in Height Ashberry during this period. So many incredible groups came out of this “neighborhood “. “Piece Of My Heart” was one of her first hits. Definitely a must!!
Janis singing ‘Cry Baby’, ‘Try’, Me And Bobby McGee, ‘Peice of My Heart 💜’ are some of Janis Joplin’s other amazing hits from her time on earth 😇 My favourite female singer of all time, I was a teen when she first was discovered & I treasured all the albums I bought ❤ RIP dear JJ, your voice is still happening & and new generations are discovering you & are amazed !!
Beautiful song from the opera Porgie and Bess by George Gershwin. About a crippled man who falls in love with a drug-addicted woman and almost makes a family with her, but the tie to the drug was too strong. Heart-breaking story and gorgeous music like this.
Heres this: "Summertime" is an aria composed in 1934 by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose Heyward, the author of the novel Porgy on which the opera was based, and Ira Gershwin.

Styx!: "Foolin' Yourself," "Too Much Time on My Hands," Come Sail Away," "The Best of Times," "Blue Collar Man " "Suite Madam Blue," "Grand Illusion " "Can't Find My Home," decent cover, "Lady" & "Lorelei."
I love the wat Janis sings this, and the arrangement, as well. But it really doesn't make sense that it was interpreted as a bluesy, soulful song. The lyrics are happy, reassuring lyrics. Meh... I don't care. It sounds good. Summertime, and the livin' is easy Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high Oh, your daddy's rich and your ma is good-lookin' So hush little baby, don't you cry One of these mornings, you're goin' to rise up singin' And you'll spread your wings and you'll take the sky But 'til that mornin', there's a-nothin' can harm you With daddy and mommy standin' by One of these mornings, you're goin' to rise up singin' And you'll spread your wings and you'll take the sky But 'til that mornin', there's a-nothin' can harm you With daddy and mommy standin' by
Thank you for doing these! Janis live is a fantastic experience. But watching you react to her (& her vocal improv artistry & her physicality while performing) compounds the chill bumps! You get it! This woman! Anyway, “TRY” is one of my favorites of hers. Subscribing today. ✅
I LOVE watching the joy on faces of people young and old listening to a newly found artist. BTW, if I am not mistaken 'Summertime' is from a musical from the 50s or 60's ? 'Porgy and Bess'.
My suggestion for a new review would be Procol Harum and the song “Whiter Shade of Pale” ; and look for the live in Denmark performance which is absolutely breath taking. Soulful song and just stunning when he’s matched with a full orchestra. But keep up with Janis too cuz she’s in a league of her own!
I don’t know if you’ve ever seen any of Tom Jones performances but he had his own shell and had Janis Joplin on his show once and they performed together a song called “Raise your hand” That is a must because that song will have you moving and I have to say they performed well together and definitely had so much fun! ua-cam.com/video/mZmiefQ5y4U/v-deo.html
Have you ever seen her performance of Ball and Chain from the Monterey Pop festival ? Hope you review it. Janis is the greatest female blues singer ever.

Rock History. "Cry babe" ( best live), "Get It, While You Can", "Little Girl Blue" are other real masterpieces...
The thing about the music from that era is NO AUTO TUNE. It wasn't needed, they actually had talent.

She literally touches your soul through song. Definitely check out Bobby McGee!
Simply the greatest singer of ALL TIME. The GOAT (or whatever the female equivalent is!). imho (and I include opera singers, Paul Robeson, et al!)
Please, from this same concert in Stockholm, do Work Me Lord. Lyrics: "I know I'm not some kind of special person down here. But no one has tried like I tried..."

Me & Bobby McGee is a great one.
She recorded it in the studio the night before she she died with a heroin overdose..

Janis... A beautiful soul Port Author Texas woman... Pain of her childhood being an outcast from her peers... They called her "pigface"
This is a classic and Janis put her own touch on it always a fav with big brother and the holding company.

She was one of the biggest hits at WOODSTOCK. Her and Jimmy Hendricks were great
I love the wat Janis sings this, and the arrangement, as well.
But it really doesn't make sense that it was interpreted as a bluesy, soulful song.
The lyrics are happy, reassuring lyrics. Meh... I don't care. It sounds good.
Summertime, and the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high
Oh, your daddy's rich and your ma is good-lookin'
So hush little baby, don't you cry
One of these mornings, you're goin' to rise up singin'
And you'll spread your wings and you'll take the sky
But 'til that mornin', there's a-nothin' can harm you
With daddy and mommy standin' by

Thank you for doing these! Janis live is a fantastic experience. But watching you react to her (& her vocal improv artistry & her physicality while performing) compounds the chill bumps! You get it! This woman! Anyway, “TRY” is one of my favorites of hers.
Subscribing today. ✅
1969 I was 16 great music 🎶 🎵 great reaction as always. sweet memories of days gone by

Seen it dozens if times and without fail I get mesmerised.
REO Speedwagon: "Time for Me to Fly," "Take it on the Run," "Keep on Loving You," "Roll With the Changes," "Ridin' the Storm Out" & "In Your Letter."
Janis Joplin's Voice was One in a Million
To soulful for this planet we live in!!! Soar and sing with the angels!!!💕🛸
I LOVE watching the joy on faces of people young and old listening to a newly found artist. BTW, if I am not mistaken 'Summertime' is from a musical from the 50s or 60's ? 'Porgy and Bess'.
Summertime was written in 1935... Janis made this song hers.
gives me chills...everytime!
This is how a woman sings the blues, the 60's and 70's was a special time
My suggestion for a new review would be Procol Harum and the song “Whiter Shade of Pale” ; and look for the live in Denmark performance which is absolutely breath taking. Soulful song and just stunning when he’s matched with a full orchestra. But keep up with Janis too cuz she’s in a league of her own!
This song was written and recorded originally in the late 30s. This song was already great, and Janis put the icing on the cake.
That was a great one, I was lucky enough to watch that episode.
I saw that on Rob Squad Reactions. Funny. Never would have seen it if not.
Have you ever seen her performance of Ball and Chain from the Monterey Pop festival ? Hope you review it. Janis is the greatest female blues singer ever.
He just did the other day, I think. I saw it but my mind is foggy. Mama Cass in the audience was priceless.
I was there - many excellent performers at Monterey.
Everything off the original Big Brother album was gold!
