I really bugs me how little respect Hagar era VH gets. ANY band on the planet would kill for the run of success they had AND the greatest hits record they could put together of Hagar era material.
Run of success? Hell, most band would have killed to have ONE ALBUM do as well and ANY of the Van Hagar albums did lol!! Sammy voice was just the beauty of power rock. They were a match made in heaven.
I was never against Sammy fronting VH. His voice, showmanship & personality are phenomenal. He still one of the most authentic yet down to Earth rock stars ever. He still rocks!
Sammy's vocals were such an inspiration! A lot of peeps who don't like Van Hagar are specifically aware of the songs that were hits - "Why Can't this be Love," and "When it's Love." If you don't like "Mine all Mine,'" "Judgement Day," "Seventh Seal" etc. then you don't like great hard rock in general!
My most favorite song from Van Halen with Sammy Hagar. it just had every element that you'd expect from a great 80's tune especially from the Van Halen era. Great music and great times. Absolutely the best ever.
Sammy's voice was made for Rock and Roll. Such passion. He never sounds like he's phoning it in. He is an all-star vocalist who sometimes gets overlooked due to the era in which he was most productive (videos, hair, leather etc.)as well as the drama that follows the Van Halen bros. He reminds me of Paul Stanley, Ted Nugent, Roger Daltry voices made to Rock Out!!
Reading the comments I realized if Sammy was VH's first singer. In the 70's. How would Dave be judged as the next singer. Probably not too well. It's always the first guys who are considered the pioneers and prob get too much credit.
I put Sammy in a class with Steve Perry as far as vocal capabilities. Definitely many classes above the group you mentioned him in. Stanley, Nugent, Daltry are basically in the same class as Roth. Not really singers. Sammy Hagar is a singer.
Love Sammy Hagar! That voice is unforgettable and makes a girl feel so mush! Get him back for more interviews. He is an amazing person and knows what love is all about.
Sammy era VH was so great. Sammies range and the keys he can see in are so rare. The maturity and growth of the band... Yes it was a new/different direction from DLR but I loved it as the much as the six albums with DLR. Best band ever with whatever line up. Including the Gary era. Rest in peace King Edward. No one comes close to your brilliance.
I remember this song during the Monsters of Rock show at Candlestick Park in 1988. Sammy was absolutely brilliant that day, hitting the notes perfectly and with a little extra energy, maybe because he was home in San Francisco.
This is the first song, and first VH song, I distinctly remember hearing. I was about 5 years old and some guys were roofing a house just over the fence from me. The sun was setting and "When it's Love" came on their radio. I was instantly mesmerized. I was humming that tune for weeks after hearing it that one time.
This was fun. Hagar was the first concert I ever went to in 1982 when I was 16. Quarterflash opened for them and was the real reason I went, but I left a Hagar fan, too. I agree he has a stellar voice.
That song has stood the test of time and held up so well for the past 32 years...everytime you hear the piano/keyboard intro, it takes you totally right back to where you were and what you were doing around 1988-89...especially if you were in junior high or high school, you got memories for a lifetime! 🤟🏿😎
Sammy and Mike were always the Foundation of Harmonics in Van Halen. That's why Motown was so great when it came out. Those vocals are drenched in your soul.
I'm a rocker who's been playing as a front man and songwriter in bands since the '70s. I've just got to say, that your soulful connection to all music is genuine and disarming. You bring a genuine joy and diversity of appreciation to all popular music and have a genius rock brain. Well done. I love watching you work, young man.
When Its Love is a brilliant written song. Amazing arrangement. The intro keyboards is phenomenal then the way band kicks in just arranged fantastic. Eddie's solo is so uplifting. Man. Want a remastered deluxe edition of OU812 CD. Awesome Sammy era Van Halen album👍
Spot on again. Such a great love song. And again the chemistry between Sammy Hagar and Eddie Van Halen and the rest of the band is undeniable. Van Halen was great before Sammy but they got better with him. Red rocker rules!
That album is absolutely on the Van Halen's best. When it's Love is has always been a favorite, and it's great to hear The Red Rocker speak about it! Adam, you have yet to make a video I haven't thought was outstanding, and this is no exception!
Sammy is a class act. Same with Michael Anthony. I had the extreme pleasure to meet Mike at a car show in Temecula, California many years ago. He's such a nice guy! I wish that the Van Hagar version of VH had survived. Those four guys are (were) magic together. Rock on, Sammy! (SUBSCRIBED!)
My all-time favorite band hands down. And all my family and friends knew it. I was and still am a Van Halen freak! They have inspired me so much throughout the years musically and otherwise.
When It's Love is my favorite song of all time. My uncle had the cassette and I'd beg him to play it over and over while were driving. He'd have to rewind it manually every time but he was happy to it. The song checks off every criteria I look for in pop/rock songs... big chorus, amazing harmonies, oohs and aahs, killer guitar solo... the song has it all for me. Thinking about it, When It's Love probably spawned my criteria for a great song and I'm just comparing other songs to it. Also, it could probably be a part of your series on less remembered 80s classics. Compared to Jump or Why Can't This Be Love, When It's Love is played a lot less on radio, even though it hit no. 5 on the hot 100 at the time.
This completed the holy trilogy of van halen LOVE jams, w love comes walkin in and why can't this be love! All 3 beautiful rocking tunes that take me back to simpler times.
It's funny that they mentioned that it was a song that so many people got married to. My wife and I also used that song as 1 of the 3 songs we danced together at our wedding reception. We sure got a raised eyebrow from the DJ. We actually had to provide him with our 3 rock songs as he didn't have them in his sappy collection! It's such an awesome song- I loved it then and I still love it- the hallmark of timeless song, its an absolute classic.
This is my favourite VH song of all-time! It emotionally stabs me through the heart and I nearly tear up every time I hear it. I can't play it often enough, not to mention the music video. I've had a man crush on Sammy Hagar because of this song for many years and still do. And that gorgeous long hair!
Nailed it….Sammy’s vocals hit me in the guts too. Makes you feel great. I listen to VH every morning on my way to work. Makes me feel good for the day ahead.
The thing I love about Sammy. He doesn't need a flashy image. He is just true rock and roll. After many years and many songs he can still pump them out.
My older brother was into VH before I was. I was 10 years old when OU812 came out.. I saw the video for "When It's Love" on Headbangers ball and I fell in love with the song instantly, soon after I got the cassette. This song and that album will always be special to me.
Nice interview on my favorite VH song with the Red Rocker! This track was exceptional as stated, as it had all the elements needed for a great Rock song. Keep this up, Professor!
Thank you so much for this Professor of Rock, one of my all time favourite of rock song When it's Love and the album and the album OU812 remains one of our favourites and I feel the same way about Sammy Hagar's incredible voice, I remember thinking his performances were out of this world as if he had drunk rocket fuel with honey :) I remember watching this with my husband so many decades ago and how thrilled we were seeing this. It brings back so many awesome memories , as my husband's band performed some of those songs. Love this, made my day seeing this, putting CD on now :) thank you , warmest regards from sunny Tasmania , Tia
WHEN ITS LOVE IS A AWESOME SONG AND NO ONE ELSE CAN SING IT AS GREAT AS SAMMY HAGAR DOES!!! WHOEVER WROTE THAT SONG KNOWS WHAT ITS LIKE TO LOVE SOMEONE EDDIE MADE THE SONGS EVEN BETTER WITH HIS GREAT GUITAR PLAYING. LOVE ALL.OF VAN HALEN SONGS. LOVE Y'ALL, KGM
You just made me love you even more than I already did. I haven't even watched the video yet and I had to comment. You are becoming my favorite go-to music Channel. I check you everyday and now you put Sammy and how great is this. You going to get a lot of views because all of us redheads are going to be watching this.
Just found this channel today because I am a die hard Red Rocker fan. I looked at your channel and realized 2 things. 1. We are going to spend a lot of time together. The other my work production just went down significantly.
sammy was van halen, i was never interested in them until sammy came along. i have met sammy several times and he is the sweetest down to earth guy everyone says he is. i even was invited to attend his birthday party at cabo. i was so sad that eddie passed away. i was always hoping they would have gotten back together. the hits that van halen had were written by sammy. its the tempo, the words, the voices that made them unforgettable.
I initially had trouble with it because it wasn’t DLR… However, when I saw the video I quickly recognized the greatness of the song… The harmonies with Michael et al are just incredible!
I wish so much to see Hagar and VH on the same stage again. I saw them in Mtl in 1995. I would take a trip anywhere in America to see and eat this again. Life goes on and one day it will be to late.
I wonder if these songs would have happened if David had still been with the group? What singer you prefer may depend on the style of rock you like, but I personally liked the music they put out with Hagar more than with David. The stuff they put out with David, naturally sounds more wild and crazy, which I think reflected their actual youth, but the stuff they put out with Sammy sounded like a group that had mastered its craft.
Yeah, Love david, but they were more a "show" band with david. More of a "rock" band with sammy. Given, alot of that might just be the times, but more mature is a good way to phrase the difference. Both versions are great though!
Dave would have never sang these songs and the lyrics are Sammy's so the songs would have never happened. The Melodies and the keyboards by Eddie and his guitar and Alex on drums Etc yes but Roth never in a million years would come up with these lyrics. Four number one albums in a row. Hardly any rock band does that except the Stone's, Elton John, big name bands.
Prof, thanks for the spotlight on VH, and especially this song. One fine spring day in 1989, I was walking to meet my gf, listening to the radio on my Walkman, when this song came on. By the end of the song, I decided that I would ask her to marry me. Here we are now, almost 31 years in! BTW - I am also a proud member of the 1013 club with Sammy, and so is our first son, Sammy, 10/13/93.
You are so right when you said the comment about Sammy & VH combined was truly magic and is a "once upon a time" scenario! I loved the DLR era but I have to say that Sammy just brought the band to a different level. Don't get me wrong, both DLR and SH are iconic vocalists that made each era distinct and amazing! I am not one to say one is better than the other because I don't think that is a fair thing to do. I truly wish that the band (EVH, AVH, MA & SH) were able to put history behind themselves and reunite for a tour. I got to see VH in 2012 with DLR and I loved it, wish I could say the same for a chance at SH. Lot's of great summer time memories listening to 5150 right through to the Greatest Hits album. Thanks for the music boys! Great interview, thanks for sharing with us!
I think they are both great. They are very different so there is room to release both as singles which they did, and judging by the success of hdikwil, it was smart to release it. I feel a police vibe from feels so good. . It is a great song....actually I see ou812 get panned alot, but I loved it as a 14 yr old listening to it at friends houses etc and I still love it today...I love Cabo wabo and black and blue as well. The knock on the album is the production, but as a 14 yr old those songs were part of that summer for me and reminds me of the girl I chased and finally hooked up with mid summer. The songs on that album will always bring me back .
I was 6 when I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and I remember it. My passion for music began that night. The Professors passion should never be questioned!😎
Sammy has always been one of my favorite rock vocalist as well. I didn’t “love” Van Halen until Sammy joined and those 1st 3 albums they did together are still some of my favorites. Thanks for sharing this video. ✌🏻 ☮️
OU812 was a great follow up to 5150 and the songs were amazing, proving it was an instant classic. As for the great vocals on when it's love, it shows Michael Anthony was the back bone of VH with his vocals and a true team player. Too bad the VH brothers treated him like crap, like cutting him out of an equal share of the band's profits near the end of the Roth era, and still diss him to this day with some of the comments EVH made not too long ago about showing Mike how to play certain cords, etc. I'm glad that Sammy realized how important and talented Michael Anthony was and that he made him a part of his band when VH replaced him with Wolfie VH. They never sounded the same after Mike was replaced and it shows again how smart and cool Sammy Hagar is. OU812 was a great time in VH history and I look back at it with fond memories. Great channel and I'm loving this.
Sammy brings a love of music to his work. It’s as if he is a fan of what he is doing. Sammy never goes through the motions and has a deep connection to what he does. Michael Anthony is that undertone of Van Halen that made them work out. You can’t have everyone over the top like Dave Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen because you need a stable and dependable musician who is there but sort of is so low key he goes unnoticed but is still important nonetheless.
I really bugs me how little respect Hagar era VH gets. ANY band on the planet would kill for the run of success they had AND the greatest hits record they could put together of Hagar era material.
Adding insult to injury, unlike the DLR era albums, none of Sammy's albums with Van Halen have been remastered!
Run of success? Hell, most band would have killed to have ONE ALBUM do as well and ANY of the Van Hagar albums did lol!! Sammy voice was just the beauty of power rock. They were a match made in heaven.
I don't know man, there's a #uck ton of Van Hagar fans out there! I think they HAVE the respect.
It really bugs me how many people haven't heard of the band Montrose.
Helluva lot better than VH III, lol.
I was never against Sammy fronting VH. His voice, showmanship & personality are phenomenal. He still one of the most authentic yet down to Earth rock stars ever. He still rocks!
@Majik0715 Many of the 'soft' songs are from Eddie.
Donna McManus DLR is a clown now look at him. And his voice is gone
Those years, the 80s were awesome,, every day was good.
Sorry for your loss...our loss
Yes. SPECIALS!
My most favorite song from Van Halen with Sammy Hagar. it just had every element that you'd expect from a great 80's tune especially from the Van Halen era. Great music and great times. Absolutely the best ever.
OU812 is so overlooked, definitely one of their very best
OU812 and Hysteria were in constant rotation in my Sony Walkman in 88, my first year of high school. Love this channel
🤘😎👍
me too, both albums sound very slick and polished, i love it.
Me too
They are still in my rotation
Sony Walkman....lol
I had the Yellow Sports model with Auto Reverse......It was the coolest thing ever!
Now we have IPhones. .....
Couldn't agree more! My favorite vocalist for sure!
Both VH and Sammy benefited enormously from getting together.
And yes, I've always thought Paul Stanley sounds exactly like a rock singer should!
Reading the comments I realized if Sammy was VH's first singer. In the 70's.
How would Dave be judged as the next singer. Probably not too well.
It's always the first guys who are considered the pioneers and prob get too much credit.
@FarOutWest he possibly meant derek st. holmes.
I put Sammy in a class with Steve Perry as far as vocal capabilities. Definitely many classes above the group you mentioned him in. Stanley, Nugent, Daltry are basically in the same class as Roth. Not really singers. Sammy Hagar is a singer.
Sammy took Van Halen to its greatest heights 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
'Balance' is an incredible album. One of the most under-rated rock records of the '90s.
"When It's Love" just happens to be my favorite VH song and Sammy is one of my top 5 favorite rock singers. The dude is still kickin ass in his 70s!
Love Sammy Hagar! That voice is unforgettable and makes a girl feel so mush! Get him back for more interviews. He is an amazing person and knows what love is all about.
Outstanding. That song takes me back to 88. Great follow up on 5150. Thanks professor 👍
Indeed.
The harmonies are sick. Sammy's lead vocal is legendary.
Van Hagar for life!! I grew up on Sammy's voice. My dad RIP was his biggest fan!!
I loved 5150 and OU812 so much bitd. It was just an evolution of the band with the Red Rocker.
Sammy is such a consummate professional and a music and lyrics genius. I've had everything he's ever done and he's never let me down.
I remember this song during the Monsters of Rock show at Candlestick Park in 1988. Sammy was absolutely brilliant that day, hitting the notes perfectly and with a little extra energy, maybe because he was home in San Francisco.
I was at that show -- I was living down in Monterey at the time. I have some pretty vivid memories of that day.
Oh man, I still love this song; it just never gets old...
"When it's Love" is such an Emotional Jam.

Sammy and Mike were always the Foundation of Harmonics in Van Halen. That's why Motown was so great when it came out. Those vocals are drenched in your soul.
Radio stations need to play great songs like this instead of the same songs over and over again!

My favourite song of all time. Sammy’s voice! Woah!!

Unfortunately it doesn't look like Eddie will bury the hatchet with Sammy which is terrible.
Seriously I can't believe sammy is in his 70's.... he looks like he's 50
It’s all that clean livin
Sammy and Professor of Rock is a match made in heaven !
Awesomeness! I listen to 5150 at least once a week, OU812 also. So glad I got to see them live back in 2005
Balance is my favorite VH album. Amazing songs in Sammy's era. "Why cant this be love" is another anthem!
🗣I CAN'T TELL YOU BUT IT LASTS FOREVER Luv the vocals!!!
Sammy has always made every band he's been with super! One of rock's best voices, along with Daltry, Marriott, and Plant.
One of my favorite Van Hagar tunes. Eddie paying homage to Clapton on the solo. Nice interview
I see Sammy, I click. Long live the Red Rocker!
This is my favourite VH song of all-time! It emotionally stabs me through the heart and I nearly tear up every time I hear it. I can't play it often enough, not to mention the music video. I've had a man crush on Sammy Hagar because of this song for many years and still do. And that gorgeous long hair!
Love Sammy’s vocals!
Sammy is the man. Seems like a smart guy but always stays humble. Incredible to think how long he's been rocking our world. Great interview thanks!
It was a great era for VH! Thanks POR
The prolonged ending is everything to me about this great masterpiece LOVE VAN HALEN !
Sammy is one of the most recognized rock voices and a very cool dude . I loved his music every since Montrose.😎 Rock Candy Baby.
Great video! This version of the band was soooo killer!
Certainly one of the best songs ever made.
Ou812 my Favorite Release with Sammy. When it's Love, Finish what you Started and Black and Blue.....Incredible Tunes!!
This album ? No words..
( maybe 1.. treasure )
My absolute fave VH track of all time. Those rack toms are deadly too. Miss Van Hagar!
Sammy kicks ass, just saw him Saturday night in Tulsa and it took me back 30 years, the music is just incredible, still!
Man... Sammy is one of my childhoods heros ever. Thanks for interviene him. God blees You. Grettings from Perú!
Best hard rock love song of all times rip Eddie Van Halen Your music will go on forever
Best song and album in the Van Hagar era. Every song is pure gold!
I just finished reading all these comments. 99% of the comments were favorable towards Sammy. That is so exciting. Thank you again professor of Rock.
Thank You Professor for this amazing stuff nad amazing guests. This song was my father theme song in 80s
Sammy should be in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. They should induct him twice (the 1st time with VH).
I never understood why you couldn’t be a Roth AND a Hagar fan. I loved the Sammy years.
Just found this channel today because I am a die hard Red Rocker fan. I looked at your channel and realized 2 things. 1. We are going to spend a lot of time together. The other my work production just went down significantly.
Sammy Hagar is my favorite VH singer. Such talent and such a cool dude. No circus drama with Sammy, just rock and soul.
You interviewed Sammy. This is so exciting on so many levels you cannot believe. Thank you so much
sammy was van halen, i was never interested in them until sammy came along. i have met sammy several times and he is the sweetest down to earth guy everyone says he is. i even was invited to attend his birthday party at cabo. i was so sad that eddie passed away. i was always hoping they would have gotten back together. the hits that van halen had were written by sammy. its the tempo, the words, the voices that made them unforgettable.
I initially had trouble with it because it wasn’t DLR… However, when I saw the video I quickly recognized the greatness of the song… The harmonies with Michael et al are just incredible!
It’s like PoF is reading my diary the last weeks. This is my favorite “Van Hagar” tune! Can’t wait!
I wish so much to see Hagar and VH on the same stage again. I saw them in Mtl in 1995. I would take a trip anywhere in America to see and eat this again. Life goes on and one day it will be to late.
Amazing song, amazing voice
I loved both 5150 and OU812. Great songs. I was a teenager then. Listening to the casettes on a Sony Walkman.
I love this is music, thanks Sammy Hagar and Van Halen. Thanks, Love.
Saw them on the OU812 tour and man they blew it out of the water. Such a great team. So sorry it ended.
I always thought of the David years as teen/college boy and the Sammy years, the boy grows up. I love em both!!!
Yeah,
Love david, but they were more a "show" band with david.
I agree
@Therin Chilnsford Amsterdam lyrics are probably the worst of any Hagar song. That's too bad because the instrumental part is fantastic.
I remember when the song came out. I loved it. I had the video recorded on a VHS tape
My favorite van Hager song
Brilliant album.... feel so good is my fav song off this album..
Magical song. I've always loved it. Bought OU182 in cassette when it came out... played it till my ear bled, to paraphrase Bryan Adams ;)
Van Halen with Sammy was without any doubt, the greatest Rock n Roll band Ever. Period.
Beautiful song, even though I personally love most Right now. The piano is unique and unbelievable
Best band on the planet with Sammy now the circle is...
I have always liked Feels So Good more than When It's Love. I think it is the superior pop tune on OU812.
Not me
Hell yeah Feels So Good is FAR SUPERIOR to When It's Love!!!!!!!!!!
"I'll send a message in a bottle
I'LL SEND A MESSAAAAGE”
The drumming in “Feels So Good” is probably some of the most impressive drumming by AVH...or anyone
Feels So Good for me the perfect follow-up to Dreams. Bluesier and very prog. Just pure awesomeness. I love When It’s Love, though. I love the power.
Van Hagar is my favorite era of the band.
Mikey's harmony is right on,love him as well ❤
One of my favorite VH songs
I was 6 when I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and I remember it. My passion for music began that night. The Professors passion should never be questioned!😎
I always enjoyed The Red Rocker. 'When It's Love' is great, but solo songs like 'Remember the Heroes'... no words.
Seriously. BEST channel on YT. Instant click every time.
Miss this band
