I was lucky enough to have a grandfather who lived during the dying ages of the "west" and the Victorian era. He was born in 1898. When I was three or four in the early 90s him and my mom took me to a Tractor Supply Store while I was wearing a ball cap. I was papaw's favorite and could do no wrong, but when I stepped through the front doors of that store, that hat got snatched like lightning off my head by papaw. I started wearing my hat a year ago when i started working outside. I was surprised at watching this, how much came natural to me. I wasn't raised in the west, meaning Arizona but spent a lot of time growing up in South Texas where the old punchers were. They used to run thr cattle through my uncles neighborhood back in the days of driving up from Texas to Canada and Back to the Union Stock Yards. Well, I take my hat off in a place of respect or where women are. In stores that is an exception but I do tip my hat when acknowledging women. I take it off at grace but I also leave it on when I am faced with a person whom I view as one who does not deserve my respect. I will take my hat off if I am in the presence of the owner of my company but my boss I will not. I am not so touchy about others touching my hat aside from having to move it if it is in the seat of the truck or so on, but I won't let anyone wear it or mess with it. Not like Dirty Dan
Actually Beetle Shellack was used in western hats to keep them stiff. Some city hats as well. It was added during the felting process. There was a big battle between Stetson and Resistol back when the Stetson factory shut down and Stetson which was a softer western hat became stiffer as they switched their factory to make hats more accommodated to the rodeo world. I know because I was their creative director and archived a lot of Stetson's history.
Thank you, Matt, for adding that piece of Beetle Shellack and Stetson history. Even though this was a video about hat etiquette, it is great to hear about your research at Stetson!
@@MattDeckard I mention in my hat shaping episode that westerners probably didn't concern themselves too much with stiffening the hat (post purchase). I would imagine after that Beetle Shellack wore off they just let it be whatever shape it wanted to be.
Chris LeDoux made a good song about a cowboy hats I don’t remember its name but it went “You’ll ride a black tornado, across the western, rope an old Blie Northern and milk it till it’s dry”

Hey, that bed thing is right. I had my hat on the dresser and my housekeeper put it in the hat box and set it on the bed in the spare room...didn't dawn on me for a day or two and dang if the moths had already chewed a furrow in the brim...
As always, loved it, was a late bloomer, didn’t start wearing a (cowboy) hat, till I was fifteen. Don’t leave the house without one (even to go to the mailbox). And yes never touch another mans hat. 🤠. Know it was a skit, but someone would have got shot 😁😄. Spitting, stomping on it. 😳
Arizona Ghostriders the best way I’ve been able to explain how I feel about my Hat is a Chis LeDoux song (sure you heard it) This Cowboy’s Hat. Right on target.🤠
This may or may not be true but it would make sense considering how valuable a good hat was: I've heard that a big reason for leaving your hat on in a saloon or other public place where one might spend a decent amount of time, is because a hat left on a table or anywhere out of sight could quickly become a stolen hat.
Both are good reasons. I've had to leave my gun with the bartender in Tombstone while in the saloon. Made me itchy the whole time. My expensive property out of eyesight and reach...
@@ArizonaGhostriders I've been fortunate enough to never be asked to disarm myself, I imagine I'd be nervous as a chicken in a fox den. By the way, thank you for taking the time to respond to these comments. I just discovered your channel yesterday and I love it 👍
I had wedding today which sparked a heated debate whether it was ok to leave a cowboy hat on inside or ake it off I thought you were suppose to remove it but others told me formal leave it on 😂😂 the kicker of it all was when I got there it was a outside wedding lol I took it off as the bride passed over my heart kid and then when we went in to the reception which was inside took it off then too remembering to set it down upside down
Looks like you figured it out ok. For western themed weddings it's probably just fine. I've been to some that weren't, and the cowboys only take their hats off during the religious part of the ceremony.
Lol. I love this channel. I can set and watch it all day. But if rather go outside some. Found you thru one of your friends Dustin Wineagar. Sorry probly spelled it wrong
When I met my wife, I reached up and "tipped" my Stetson, and said "Howdy Ma''am." She said I had her right there. Also, I've always heard you never put a hat down with the open side down. You put it down crown side down so the "luck won't run out."
great vid Cheese !!!! I love the hat superstition rituals... they also apply when re-naming your boat. You remove every vestige of the old name from the boat, then invoke the "ruler of the sea" with a chant, and then appease the 4 Wind gods by flinging glasses of champagne in each direction with another "wind god" chant :-) Silly really, only for the rubes. Did I do it when I renamed my boat you ask?? OF COURSE I DID !!! :-) ha ha ha and since my boat was really old, I spent $100 on the champagne. I am the very definition of rube :-) (although in my defense, my wife and I did steal a half glass each for ourselves!!
Another great video, Santee! Of course, I was hoping Dirty Dan's threat of throwing you through a window was foreshadowing but I guess for those kinds of props you would need to "pass the hat" around. 😉
Arizona Ghostriders ... Actually, I just read through the comments and I think I'm the only one who suggested it. Maybe having Dirty Dan around - and hanging out with a ghost and a T-Rex - is making you a touch paranoid. 🤠
Few other things: 1) One tips the hat to a lady, not another man. 2) On those (rare) occasions when you do get to handle my hat, DON'T YOU DARE GRAB IT BY THE BRIM! I invested a good bit of time shaping it. 3) Handle it by the band, so you don't leave oily fingerprints in the beaver. 4) The hat may remain on in public areas of a building (foyer, hallway &c.), but should be removed in private areas (e.g. offices). 5) The hat may be left on if standing at a bar or sitting at a lunch counter. Remove it if dining at a table. 6) If a young lady takes your hat off your head and places it on her own, it is an invitation to -- err -- "rub buckles".
My cowboy friends an I always placed our hats on the hat shelves provide in Wyoming drinking and eating establishments. In the military, hats are never worn indoors unless you are carrying a weapon. Walk into the Officer’s Club with a hat on and the bartender rings a big bell to let every know you’re buying! Yeah, it can get expensive. Don’t ask.....

I see in westerns where men tip the brim of their hats with, as you say. 2 fingers to another man same as what he would do to a woman. That wasnt the way it was done. The way it was done, IF a man wanted to show respect or slight familerity to another man in passing he might touch the brim of his hat with his index finger. Also, this was done when a man was told to do something, and he would touch the brim of his hat in acknowledgement of the request, and then proceed to do it
I've read a few historical books of etiquette that lead me to believe there was no tipping to another man, only women. However I've also seen more modern versions of what you stated. So, I'd be interested to know your source so we can get a real handle on that.

You would think. But that info came to me from a cowboy source! However, doing that to Dan's hat could end up getting you shot.
Arizona Ghostriders the best way I’ve been able to explain how I feel about my Hat is a Chis LeDoux song (sure you heard it) This Cowboy’s Hat. Right on target.🤠
Or watch Wild Bill, staring Jeff Bridges “you don’t touch another mans hat”.
Another funny video. Keep up the good work. 👍🤠
I tip my hat 👒 to you guys! Keep calm because it will be a long week ..
Yes. We have a heat advisory for the first 3 days. Damn....
@@ArizonaGhostridersWell the days will pass until Saturday arrives for sure Thanks
"Take your hat off boy, that's a dollar right there!" XD
:-)
This may or may not be true but it would make sense considering how valuable a good hat was: I've heard that a big reason for leaving your hat on in a saloon or other public place where one might spend a decent amount of time, is because a hat left on a table or anywhere out of sight could quickly become a stolen hat.
That could very well be true. I would think given the places were small there was just nowhere to put the hat!
@@ArizonaGhostriders Ah yes, that would also make sense, hadn't thought about that!
I just discovered your channel yesterday and I love it 👍
Glad to hear it, Daniel!
This was GREAT! You’ve answered a lot of questions that were keeping me up at night, thanks 🙏. Lol 😂
HA! Good.
😄😄I love your channel!! I enjoyed a lot !! Very good job!!!👍👍👍
I appreciate that.
My hat's off to you for this episode...yuk yuk.
lol!
Damn I love this channel.
🤠🤠 Much appreciated.
F for respect for Alice.
I've learned so much! Good thing I keep my hat on my dresser.
Thank you!
@@ArizonaGhostriders you're welcome partner.
Another great video and also sorry for your loss.
Thank you, Eric!
I think yall missed the opportunity for a good mother in law joke with the T-Rex dressed as a lady.
I did!
Love your channel!!!!!!
Thank you so much!!
"Take off your hat son! It's a dollar bill!"
🤠
Lol. I love this channel. I can set and watch it all day. But if rather go outside some. Found you thru one of your friends Dustin Wineagar. Sorry probly spelled it wrong
It's all good. I call Dustin all sorts of names! Thank for watching.
When I met my wife, I reached up and "tipped" my Stetson, and said "Howdy Ma''am." She said I had her right there. Also, I've always heard you never put a hat down with the open side down. You put it down crown side down so the "luck won't run out."
That last one I think is regional. Either way it's better for the brim if it isn't on an uneven surface.
Hi mate this was really cool makes me wonder what ever happened to my old cowboy hat
Thanks, man! Now, go find that hat.
Arizona Ghostriders+lol I know right think I need a new one 😃
great vid Cheese !!!!
I never knew that, Joe! Thanks! Glad you two got a shot of champagne....no need for the boat to have it all.
Sir nice description regarding covering of heads..looks like from now on i m gonna wear a hat to cover my head lol...
HAHA! Bring back the craze, BILOM
Another great video, Santee! Of course, I was hoping Dirty Dan's threat of throwing you through a window was foreshadowing but I guess for those kinds of props you would need to "pass the hat" around. 😉
HAAH! Yes. Why does everyone want to see me get hurt?
Arizona Ghostriders ... Actually, I just read through the comments and I think I'm the only one who suggested it. Maybe having Dirty Dan around - and hanging out with a ghost and a T-Rex - is making you a touch paranoid. 🤠
It's the others, JSSHOUS. Dan, Batjac, Jerry, Red...they all smile when it comes to me getting hit or shot. My days are numbered.
Arizona Ghostriders Well, yeah… That’s true!🤠
@@ArizonaGhostriders "C'mon prettyboi.."
*window smashifyin' ensues*
Few other things:
1) One tips the hat to a lady, not another man.
Good info. Thanks.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Keep up the good work! Love the channel!
HAHAHA! Thanks for the info.
Didn't know that!! Thanks Santee.
I learn this stuff, too! Fun.
Good video liked
Awesome Video like always Santee 👍😎 Very funny & full of History it doesn't get any better than that 🤠👍 Who knows what movie in your video was from ??? BATJAC better know 👍 It was 1 of the best Westerns ever made 🤠🔫👍 Later Santee 🤠 LLTOW 🤠 And see you on down at the Saloon 🥃🍻🤠 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks Darin! I'm sure old Batjac will chime in here soon.
In the words of Abe Lincoln 'If you wanna get ahead get a hat' 🤠👍
🤠
I tip my hat to ladies when I see them. Will have to remember to take it off when I have a conversation with them in the future.
That is not done so much any longer. The hat tip is, and it's a classy move.
1:50 they put this in the Wild Bill movie starring Jeff Bridges I always wondered if it was true
🤠
So does Dan like his new hat??? LOL!
He better like it (don't let him know I said that)!
