I'll bet the gun men in the old west didn't have a box of holsters they didn't use. Awesome job on the one you made.
Thank you. I would imagine that you probably had only one holster and used that until you either got a new gun or it got too damaged.
I have a holster that was made in the late 1870's or early 1880's. It's still in really great condition and gets used from time to time.
SO cool. take good care of it.
You got my letter! LOL!
Thanks for doing this video! Very informative! I love it!
Glad you got something out of it.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Dustin you guys should do a video about pocket pistols of the old west I currently carry a 1887 Smith and Wesson model 1/2 single action 32 top break let me know I just started following Arizona Ghost but I know I've talked to you before Dustin W....thanks
Very nice piece! Yes, we will do one on pocket pistols at some point. Don't worry!
@@ArizonaGhostriders how about a piece on Merwin & Hulbert Pistols?
I like your videos on the holsters. I'm looking at it from a historical point and seeing the detail in the artwork that's what I like.
Right on
Go without a gun?...
I know how they feel. My ancestors are from Scotland and are cousin to King James
6th of Scotland/ 1st of England. My family has been high on security for centurys. I actually hardly ever leave the house without a sword cane.
( "Sword cane...never leave home without it," Oh just wonderful, Santee my friend you are rubbing off on me! 😛 ) I can't get over how great these videos are! Thank you everyone for making them !
🤠
I love Tombstone, AZ. Last time I was there, we were walking around with "modern" firearms on our hips...and enjoyed watching the tourist freak out.
HAHA! Yeah, tourists can't get over the open carry laws here. Especially the ones from California.
yeah, and I was from CA ...but it was the people from France we enjoyed freaking out the most.
LOL!!!
I am from California and the gun laws here SUCK! Once I complete school I am moving to Arizona and move into a living history town or something.
I have a holster for my Remington, one of the fully enclosed types. Kept it nice and dry when I went hiking and camping.
Very cool!
Really nice holsters, I had no idea you made holsters. Great work and very educational. Can't wait for the follow up.
I watched it 4 times
Loved the clip from Shane - one of my all time favorite Westerns.
Good one Santee, even if I’m a little late! I made holsters for several family members and they still see use.
That is awesome!
0:21 Dustin Dustin Winegar I like that part Santee
Yep
Can you do a video discussing the use of normal forward facing holsters and cross draw holsters in the old west? Who used which and why?
Excellent content!
I covered it here, if this is what you mean: ua-cam.com/video/r0Q34R2078I/v-deo.html
Lee van Cleef used a cross draw because the director thought it was cool and menacing
Currently making a pair of Hand of God holsters. I love Will Ghormley's patterns
They are drool-worthy. Have fun with the holsters
I’ve always been partial to the crossdraw holster. Whether you’re on a horse or in a vehicle, it makes access very easy.
True
Wow, another little gem of a vid! Just when I thought I had seen most of the vids on this channel, I always come across yet another hidden goodie!
Thank you!
Santee, can you make a video about knifes in the old west?
You are the second interested party! Yes, I will for after Christmas!
٠ومسددددةبتقزبةبىببب لغلخ
I made my first custom tooled leather gun belt for a customer. Absolutely had a blast making it.
It's fun...especially when you get to the part when it starts looking like the finished product.
@@ArizonaGhostriders yeah actually seeing it come to completion was amazing. I'm going to make one to sell at the next local gun show. Btw I love this channel!!
@@stimpymcwhisky8129 Thank you...and I love your last name! HA!
@@ArizonaGhostriders thank you
Santee, In Cowboy Action Shooting the holster rig can be a requirement for the categories you shoot in. Could you discuss the buscadero (gunfighter- grips are below belt) used for B-Western, left and right rigs, holsters at hip bone, with the grips above the belt, and strong side/crossdraw combination with grips above belt? Thanks. Red Desert Drifter
I can. Will do a future episode on current western gunleather and highlight that. Thanks.
Hey Santee, can you do a video about rifles in the old west.
Yes!
My late father made and repaired holsters for the last thirty years of his life. Some of the holsters and belts he made were copies of originals and have been sold at auctions as originals unbeknownst to the seller or the buyer, he was that good his name was J.R. Allen.
That's amazing! Hope you have some of his tools.
what a fine selection of holsters, so many shapes and sizes, nice to watch
Awesome looking holsters. Thanks for sharing Santee
That dang Bill is a rascal aint he.Great job on that holster you made, and great video too,as always.
Thank You!
My favourite holster is the cavalry holster, or something referred too as the reverse draw holster.
The huge difference between a cavalry holster and the iconic normal western holster is the gun position. With a cavalry, the revolver is faced backwards with its butt faced forwards. To draw the gun, you had to twist your wrist to grab the grip, and twirl your wrist back around while taking the gun out so you can take aim.
Although it sounds more impractical, with alot of practise you could draw the gun just as fast or faster than with a normal revolver.
It was used commonly by soldiers in the civil war. And while you wont find many gunslingers in the wild west sporting such holsters, some did use them. Including the famous Wild Bill Hickok.
Its a shame the holster isnt commonly shown in movies, im guessing because the draw technique for cavalry seems more complex for actors.
Still, its my favourite holster out of them all
I talk about that carry style in another video
This was certainly a wonderful insight, about into gun holsters. Totally worth the watch.👌
Glad you enjoyed it.
I've made a Hand of God off of Will Ghormley's pattern too. Thinking about tooling it makes my fingers ache but it is a beauty...now I just wish I had those inlaid gold cross grips
I like the silver inlaid grips, and have almost clicked on the "Buy" button more than once.
I was pulled over by a CHP officer around Yreka. He gave me a warning, but his ticket book was a tooled leather book that was beautiful. He said he had a saddle maker make it for him and in 28 years, I was the first guy to notice it.
That's a great story
I've got that Will Ghormly pattern pack and have made that holster. It really is a sight to behold. Only wish I'd had the means to do the aging process he described in the instructions.
Just finished making my own Holster and Im very proud of it!
Way to go! Now, you gotta make a few more for your movie, right?
OK, you corralled a subscription. That was fun and worth a watch, thanks for a good informative well done video.
You're welcome!
I liked Eli Wallach's holster from Magnificent 7. It was dark brown leather, had 3 turquoise stones in it.
I'll have to watch it again.
3 years ago when i was on Facebook in one of the 45 Colt pages, i asked about a Holter rig for my Uberti Cattleman, someone offered their holster for free as long as i pay the shipping, package turned up at my door 2-3 weeks later, turned out a El Paso Saddlery Hellfire Double Rig, he was in Michigan i am in Calgary, Alberta , Canada, very nice surprise
Pretty neat!!
this is a very original and creative channel. It took me a month to finally get here, but it was worth the wait. I love the whole ghost town set up, you have and the colors everything is painted, and the history lesson that comes along with each video. Very underrated channel. I guess if you want tens of thousands or millions of subscribers, you have to show off make up or what you bought at Walmart or the dollar store. Pitiful What some people consider entertainment👍🌟
Greetings from Ireland. A great subject. When you return to the subject can you go into some detail about the ornamentation on leather such as studs, conchos, buckles and such.
Sure. The Indians loved doing that stuff to holsters.
Thanks. Can't wait to see Bill's new Walker.
i like that holster you made, also.
Santee out here making me jealous since all I have is a replica US Army Slimjim and a regular belt 😂
Serves me well tho, I practice my draw speed and other tricks with its help.
Whatever you have works!
I had to buy one of those for my lower extremities ! I use to be the quickest draw in town but now at 103 it doesn't want to draw or do anything else for that matter ! You do have a nice channel though ! Cheers 👍
Thank you!
It's almost like the internet knows what I'm doing. I make my leather, and I made one today. Hmm?
Nice review. I was thinking about the history as I learned it, and that confirms what I've read.
Very cool!
We have so many synthetic materials for cloth what about doing one on the materials they used for clothes and linens and such
Yes!! Good one.
*Gets a holster ad*
Yep I expected that one
Great vids, could you do a vid on cochiseleather in Arizona ( old style gun belt maker)
Yes. I love their stuff.
Great video again Santee! I loved so many of those holsters with great patterns on them, they look really beautiful. I didnt know you are so crafty😮The holster you made yourself is truly beautiful, get it back from Bill!😈😈😈
He hides things in my sock drawer. So, I found it. Thanks!
My fave are the Anderson F/D rigs, but my old west is the earp rig from tombstone. .
good choice
Like the humor.
Love the leather work.😊
Thanks
Could you do a video on all the different holster mounting variations ?
You mean like cross draw versus strong side?
@@ArizonaGhostriders Yes sir, i think it would be a very interesting video as to why people opted for all the different variations they did and why some chose to reverse their guns etc like wild bill
Edit: Oh aswell as all the chest or abdomen style rigs too like doc holiday
@@chunchoe Good idea! I will put that on the list!
I found some western pics in my family tree and one of my family members was a gunslinger ( smart choice for his holster I suppose) but he had a double action revolver like Micah's kinda but the skull grip was different color and no words on the barrel. he had a Mex loop holster but mixed with a stretched out slim jim holster at least that's what it looked like
I would love to see that pic! Could put it in a video, too! Message me at Facebook.
@@ArizonaGhostriders ok. Only I need to make a Facebook, and I need to do d the pic I was 10 or 9 when I saw it so I'll try
Another good one Santee-in a future piece could you show how the holster is shaped to the gun? I had no idea how it was done many years ago until a friend showed me the process and I couldn't believe I hadn't though of it myself. He wrapped the gun in plastic so that it was protected from water, soaked the holster in water until pliable, then put the gun into it and moulded the leather to the gun. When the leather dries out it retains the shape and fits snugly. Was this the way they always did it or a modern take on it?
Yes, it is a more common practice now.
Nice I got to get me a holster and belt for my colt navy cartridge conversion
Thanks again, for history lessons. I'm looking into a western holster for a 455 mrk 6, and one other thing do you have a video on what food was out in the west?
I did a few on food.
Awesome video!!!! Love the Holsters!!
Have you read the Book 'Packing Iron'? It has lots of pictures of original holsters of the period.
Own that sucker! Love it. Wore the cover off.
Several yrs ago, I saw some leather (from the movie) done by Will G. The then owner displayed it at a gun show, in Iowa, he spoke of the leather of the actors including Pete Fonda, and how the work was period correct. Ironically, some of the brass in the loops was, , , -Starline-.
Will didn't supply the dummy bullets. That was the armorer or prop folks. Also, you can't tell the differene from Starline to Winchester on film.
Great video have you ever done a video on gunfighters who quick draw from across there body (week side) with the butt of the weopon forward like you see on tv westerns
great vid ..... great set of holsters too.
I live in El Paso, I been to the saloon John Wesley Hardin was killed in. To bad it was turned into a dress shop and you’re not allowed to tour the building, I tried casually walking around the employees only line lol. There is a guy around town he works with the courts, he dresses in western era clothes, reminded me of Wyatt Earp dress from the tombstone movie
That is still pretty cool, though that it's still standing. Thanks!
Santee, Just found your channel and subscribed. I’m looking to get into the cowboy action shooting, but at the moment have nothing. So needless to say, I’m looking at the best budget way for the guns, ammo and gear. Thanks for the info you are providing. Hopefully I can find a club in Nashville, TN and attend an event. 👍
Russell Crow portraying characters at the beginning and end of the 19th century. Master and Commander/310 to Yuma. Great films.
Yes. He does it well, too.
The original, with Glen Ford, was better.
That is amazing. I would love to make my own
So go for it!
Love Shane and Tombstone, have a few myself, favorites g9t to be my John Wayne, but all mine have two holsters, a regular and a crossdraw with a big old Bowie on it. 🤠
I want a right-handed cross draw for my 1847 Colt .44 Walker Dragoon.
I'm sure someone makes 'em! Look for a slim jim.
@ArizonaGhostriders I do have one of those.
🥃
I love old holsters
My Xs great uncke was a Parker Marshal in Ark. Her dad had 2 36 Navy pistols. One with a paper thin sheath with no belt loop. He took these guns to a gunsmith. one was found to be in great condition with all numbers on parts being the same. He surmised that this gun went through the war, then when the owner came home, he put it up. The other had had parts changes and had much wear. This one he assumed went with the sheath.
Nothing beats the smells of leather,
Agreed!
Silly Santee...you forgot shoulder holsters and lightning rigs! Like the vid!
Didn't forget; in the plans for the other videos. I am going to do a whole video on shoulder holsters, don't you worry!
left out the high cavalry draw, used by cavalry(of course) and favored by gamblers due to being easier to use while seated. often mistaken for a cross draw. left hand.
sante can you do a video on the quick and the dead movie landon mcilwain
At some point.
Very great video I love the good history
Great video. Thanks for the passion and the solid information.
Hey santee, were straps over the back of the gun to hold it in place while in the holster, around in the old west?
Holsters from the period don't depict them. If they were used, it was not common.
the first time i saw santee's channel, it was him reviewing red dead redemption 2 and i though "man he's gonna be one of those asshole fake history buffs" and boy was i wrong. after that, I loved watching his videos , and i've been subscribed for a while now
Thank you!
Santee can you do a video about saddles
Did one!
i’m starting to think that you like your holsters 🤣😎
and you can’t blame Bill: that’s one beautiful holster
It is. Thank you.
Santee have you done one on hat etiquette ?????
Yes!
@@ArizonaGhostriders ty I'll look for that one
Hey Santee! I noticed in the new video game Red Dead Redemption they have your character wear a hip holster on the right hip and a cross draw holster with the barrel pointing to the left. If you had to draw both quickly at the same time how would you do that effectively? Was the cross draw holster more more being on horseback or just a style?
You wouldn't. I think that is for the strong side. When one is empty, you employ the other.
Awesome vid bud..i like that holster especially that u made it..thats freakin awsome..
By the way, sewing leather is a good excuse to drink bourbon.
The one you showed at the end, the "Hand of God" holster that is your favorite, do you have a retaining thong or tab on it hidden away? Also I really like the color of the leather!!
I didn't put a hammer thong on it, although that design of Will's allows for it.
Santee, how a video on lighting in the west, like lamps and such
Caleb, got one! I think it's called Frontier Lighting.
Cool thanks
I wonder...what's the best style of holster for a shoulder holster?
The one that is most comfortable to wear!
What kind of holster would one use for a model 3 Schofield? I've had an airsoft version of it and I havent had any luck finding a holster for it
Here's a good one and a decent price:
www.etsy.com/listing/638182619/fits-smith-wesson-schofield-with-a-7?gpla=1&gao=1&&gclid=CjwKCAiAhJTyBRAvEiwAln2qB5N86MacNA057Cg8tPXLM5Lvp_7sbR66pn-Nk1ZXhKJZ3UUhP2q0txoCxcYQAvD_BwE
Hey Santee can you do a video about gun scabbards in old West ?
Spencer Wright
Like rifle scabbards?
Yes please
There was that Paladin episode where his sadistic 'benefactor' trapped him in a hole and had him modify his cavalry holster - _cutting the flap off, cutting in a throat recurve, water stiffening and larding it, etc._ - just so he could unholster his sidearm fast enough to do him in.
From those Tucson courthouse photos......it looked like old Bill was a fan of the US army flap style holster for his 7 1/2" colt saa's
Interesting you should catch that! There is some conjecture as to whether he was in the Army prior to being a bandit. He could have acquired that holster as part of his outlaw look, too.
Santee....there is an old article in trueWest magazine about stagecoach passengers eyewitness testimony on the unique way bill would hold his remington rifle with the colt saa in his left hand pressed up along side it ....in case you have never seen this.
Thank you, Tom. I have seen this and read eyewitness accounts. Bill was no slouch when it came to robbing coaches. He did quite a few successful robberies up in the Prescott area.
How about Schofield holsters? I carry a reproduction 1877 Wells Fargo model Schofield so can you do a video on them and the holsters used
Sure.
Thanks Santee, learned something again.
Do one on common guns of the old west
Done one. But I'll do another and be more specific.
Hey Santee, those are some awesome holsters. Do like the ‘Hand of God’ one. My new ones based on one used by Jesse James but it’s black. I never knew Hardin had sewn in ‘holsters’ in his coat! Thank you for these. A photo of my great great grandfather shows a walker (or army colt) sitting in his waistband. Scary choice of placement! xD How common was it to find people competing over who was quickest on the draw? I wonder if QuickDraw is a cool Hollywood idea rather than a cool historical fact. I’ve been watching ‘Godless’ recently and that Deputy, Whitey, he’s always twirling his guns and saying how quick he is. Reminds me of Tombstone with Johnny Ringo & Doc..that infamous cup scene. I think being able to draw quick is great..IF you have the eye and experience to hit the target immediately. Then again a wrong man can be a dead man pretty quick too.
Godless is a great series
what do you call the holsters that are kind of the mexican loop but with a leather snap instead of a loop?
modern western, I think.
OK the background music is too good. From 0:35 on words what is it called?
It's in the description field.
How hong have off-Handed holsters been a thing, and where they any records of guys dual wielding revolvers?
As long as there have been holsters. Typically people would carry one revolver, but exceptions like Bill Hickok were around.
My fave is the mexican loop holters
Certainly look great.
I've got to agree with you on Will Ghormley's H.O.G. holster.
Good. I don't know why, but that holster tickles my fancy.
Arizona Ghostriders I noticed you included a pic of sewing the toe plug from Will Ghormley's H.O.G. tutorial. Nice touch!
This got me thinking about what a ghost’s holster might be made out of. If the ghost’s gun is drawn from his holster, does it make a sound? 🤠
Curious Santee, on the conversions & holsters, namely the 1858's, how did they carry those little 38 RF/CF-the cartridge loops are bigger than the cartridges? Belt pouch?
Loops are authentic but drawing a pearl handled piece from a tied down buscadero sure is fun
Right?
Is the shootist holster from El paso saddlery historically accurate?
Somewhat. The cut down part is a little more than they had back then. If it was too cut down at the top, the gun would be exposed to the elements and fall out easier.
Arizona Ghostriders alright, thanks for the reply! I appreciate it!
Can you do a video about Clint Eastwood holsters from the trilogy The man with no name
Sure.
Thanks
HAHAHA! "Dustin..... Dustin Winegar.... -_- Yeah! We can do one on holsters! :D" Really cool, Santee! Never knew there are so many different holster designs!
Santee,
I heard about a flying dinosaur that was shot down by some cowboys in Tombstone, AZ during the old west. I figure you are the to one to ask about cowboy-dinosaurs questions!
Yeah the underneath do you ever do any Clint Eastwood house or’s and my name is Keith Willoughby and I’m from Bloomington Indiana
Keith, my brother lives in Bloomington!
Good info. Love the videos as always.
Thank you Eric!
One day this old Rebel Soldier is going to come and play with y'all.
We'll be ready for yuh, Reb!
Can anyone recommend a budget line holster for single action?
Wild West Mercantile has some, and I've seen some great ones on eBay as well that are reasonably prices.
