This is the video I've been waiting for :D Great to get your take on B. Uropthalmides! Thanks Rachel. ^_^ ^_^ A few more points on this fish. They school better than any of the other Boraras species, so if you enjoy that behaviour this is defintely the way to go. Unfortunately, I think they're also the shyest of the Boraras species. So keeping them in larger schools and providing them with adequate shade and cover is a must. Otherwise you just get really scared fish all the time which freak out whenever you get near the tank. Naturally they occur in swamps and rice paddies in groups with thousands of individuals. Because of this you can often find them for sale, dried and salted in Thailand! They're crispy and in my opinion quite delicious ;) Haha. They love eating microworms, so I would highly recommend you grow yourself a culture to feed them with. And once they get into spawning condition, males exhibit some brilliant sparkling blue colouration in their lateral stripe. Be sure to give them planted cover. They love Blyxa Japonica and reed like plants for spawning!
I have a small school of these guys in a 29 gallon with glowlight danios, a couple of small gouramis, and a young golden ram. They're my favorite schooling species. They're hardy, active, curious, and they'll eat blackworms longer than they are.
I have 1 of these. He was the only survivor when my LFS ordered what were supposed to be chili rasboras for me. I have him in a tank with chili rasboras and ember tetras, but oddly enough he schools more with the ember tetras than the chilis.
I have around 60 of these little guys in a 128 lt aquarium among with Ghocolate Gouramis and Kuhli loaches and they are great. I had a malfunctioning heater in the past that resulted in a temperature shock, wich in turn killed a few other fish. But didn't see any dead boraras. They are also tolerant of (smalish) nitrates spikes. Only con is that they hide a lot in the back of the aquarium among vegetation and I mostly see them only during feeding time. Great little fish overall.
man you are awesome! ive been researching and researching on what fish to buy to put on my 10 gallon and i think this by far is my favorite. My 10 gallon is full of red cherry shrimps and they are breeding like crazy. I really would love to put some fish in there and i think this would be the one. ^_^
If I put them in a planted 50 would they leave my sweet baby shrimp alone. Wood plants moss and sponge filters. And a buttload of mystery snails, was thinking of phoenix rasboras
Hi Rachel. Awesome video. thanks to you, I know that my school of boraras merah are actually boraras uropthalmoides. I want to increases my stock. How can i breed these guys. I also find them to be very brave, they nip my fingers! My males are a gorgeous red, so I dont believe you sacrifice any colour, they just have to feel at home. Anyway love your message. I wish you could ship to Canada.
Hey man, I keep all of the Boraras species except for B. Micros, and I can tell you that while these guys look great in a well lit aquarium. They're also probably some of the shyest fish out there in my experience. Unless you keep then in a group of around 15-20 I would say you're likely to almost ever see them in a well planted setup. They prefer cover, broken lines of sight and subdued lighting. They come from slightly murky swamps rather than blackwater. :)
I absolutely disagree, in all honesty. I find them to be MUCH more outgoing than the small danios like cpds, etc. I do agree with 10 or more being MUCH better, with more always being better. They are also very outgoing when housed wtih fish like rosy loaches.
Maybe just different populations or something of that sort? The first time I bough B. Uropthalmoides I had ten in my heavily planted setup with B. Maculatus, and they very, very shy and would always hide even during feeding time. Only when I bought 10 more did they begin to actively explore and be comfortable in the tank. And I've talked to people with a similar experience of this fish. Just goes to show that nothing is for certain in this hobby! ;)
Hello, I started an outdoor planted tank and I woke up this morning and it was destroyed. the Anubius was taken, and all of my plants were pulled up and left all over my deck. Do you have animals that do this? We have an opossum that lives in our neighborhood and a skunk. I even had rocks in the tank that were pushed around. Have you ever had this problem? Thank you for your time.
I happened to get one of these when I was upgrading my B.maculatus school. I currently have 12 B.maculatus and one of these little guys. I've never seen this species before in the shops (they were on my list of the top Boraras however) and I thinking that he happened to be swept up with the others (B.maculatus). Even the LFS employee said that it was "just a male of the B.maculatus... haha Would this one little guy be ok in a school of B.maculatus in a 25g long tank (80cm x 40cm x 30cm)? If I do ever come across these, I will of course like to get a little school of them. Is there a chance that these guys can hybridise with other boraras?
I would imagine the possibility of hybridization exists but the fry are so teeny it is unlikely you would have an issue. He will be fine with the others.
Thats for that Rachel - and understanding my jumbled english. It's glad to know that he should - mostly - be fine being kept with other boraras species (big sigh of relief). In the coming weeks I might go and see if my store could order some in. Hopefully. (Have you ever thought of shipping to Australia? :P ) And thanks for the idea of hybridization, I don't plan on breeding these guys nor do I expect to, but it was an interesting question that popped into my head. (Keep up the good work as well! Your truly amazing, one of my many "aquarist" that I look up to! Your vids is what got me thinking to go all nano for my latest setup where the Boraras are kept in.) Thanks again!
I've recently added 12 of these to my 55 litre tank and they follow my ember tetras everywhere. Fascinating to watch too as they never seem to stop.

They have a beautiful colouration. I think i actually prefer them to the chilis.

Nice video, thanks! 😁
Seems like you are using some lighting now . Looking good 😜
Rachel, every time you say 'caudal peduncle' i feel like i get 3 weeks added to my lifespan, that's how much it makes me giggle
Glad to be of service... caudal peduncle
will these interbreed with chili rasboras?
cool little fish I'd like 10 for my new tank hehe.
If I put them in a planted 50 would they leave my sweet baby shrimp alone. Wood plants moss and sponge filters. And a buttload of mystery snails, was thinking of phoenix rasboras
They may eat some of the smallest babies, but you should still have many survive

Condition them really really well and use very dense fine leaved plants or mops. The fry are truly miniscule.
They are really small I thought the scarlet badis I had were small 👏👏👏👏
always plz mention which level they like to swim ?? top , middle or bottom?
Are these available for sale? they look cool
I thought first I got chilli rasboras (thats what they told me in fishstore). How do you breed them?
Scusa, sai mica come farli riprodurre? ne ho comprate 7 esemplari 🐟
Awesome video, i may need some of these for my 8 gallon tank. Are they ok with high light and co2?

oh ok thanks for the info! are there any fish you would recommend for this size tank

Do one on endlers!

+Chronic Pain and Aquariums With Belou Waters raccoons are usually the culprit. So sorry that happened
+Rachel O'leary thank you so much! love , love, love your videos
Are these common at pet stores? If they are could they go in a 30 gallon community tank?
Most of the teeny fish are not super common at pet stores, mainly because their filtration is a bit too rough on them.
Ok, thank you anyway!
