    Great channel Rachel and I love all the nano fish in the fish room!
    I love the brigittae but I started losing some in my nano fluval spec a few weeks ago. I couldn't figure out why they suddenly went missing; they weren't on the floor, in the filter (they got back there numerous times before I learned to block it up with filter floss), and they weren't a'floatin. Doing a re-scape of some plants and a TERRIFYING bug came out of the substrate. A (quickly squished) dragonfly larvae is what it was and I am fairly sure that it he was the culprit. It was certainly big enough and I'm almost certain I've heard David Attenborough mention at some point that they eat small fish and fry in the wild. I assume it came in on some plants as an egg or a small larva. Lesson learned for me for all the super small fishes and shrimps going forward :(((

    I love these fish. They're extremely fun to watch, very spunky and curious and mine don't school until they're about to be fed; then they all school right in front, which is funny to watch. My tank is fully planted so each fish just goes about its day exploring. They are fed thawed baby brine shrimpp, which they love. And they have a veracious appetite so take care not to over feed, since they're also excellent scavengers. They do well with shrimp and other fish that are comparable in size as well.

    I just dropped my 1st 10 chilis in with 2 snp corys and 4 lambchop rasboras that ive had for a year. My plan was to drop a couple chilis into each of my shrimp tanks as dworm-control, but now, im going to try to breed them. Thank you for this video and all your videos.

  • @Andreas-gh6is
    @Andreas-gh6is 4 роки тому

    From "Mark's Aquatics" and some other sources I heard that they are continuous spawners and that they only drop a few eggs per day. They also need really low Ph, especially for the eggs to hatch and the fry to survive. All of that predisposes them for meager "output", I guess. But there are frequent reports of fry hatching in community/non-breeding tanks, so it shouldn't be all that difficult to optimize.

    I purchased 20 of these not even 2 months ago to keep in my 10g.planted tank. I love them. They are still maturing and coloring up. I also have new blue dreams too in the tank with my first berried shrimp. Crossing my fingers I'll have more babies surviving then being a snack. (Tank has a lot of microorganisms, bio film, some botanicals, and a little Christmas Moss in a couple of rocks. I've been watching several species spotlight video's tonight for I'm considering getting more nano fish in my 10g now. Might get cpd's again. Had them in the past.

    Hi Rachel, I need your help.
    I bought 10 or 12 Phoenix Rasbora (Boraras merah) about 2 months ago and bought 10 Chilli Rasbors about a month ago.
    But they are dieing on by one.Now I only have 5 or 6 of them.
    I kept them with some celestial pearl danios, Ember tetras and some shrimps.There were also some planarias too .Tank was a well planted setup and with tan water (Indian Almond Leaves) .
    I fed them Hikari first bites and Hikari micro pallets.
    About a week ago I put them in to a another tank and medicating with prazi gold(praziquantel),eritromicin and metronidazole.The dose is half the amount of recommended dose.But I did not add any Indian almond leaves.
    I started feeding them baby brine shrimps about a week ago as I thought food might be the cause of their death.Most of them behave just fine now except for a fish.
    They all had same behavior before their death. Every dead fish swam near to the surface of the water about 24 hours ago before dieing.
    What might me the cause for death of them.Do you have any experience like this.I found out this isn't happening just for me.Some people have mentioned this exact problem in several forums.But no one seems to know the exact cause their dieing.
    How do you keep these guys.Do you give them any specific water parameters.
    I have a doubt about Indian almond leaves and planaria.

    They aren't too shy, but I noticed they hate changes. In my tank they did well with Neon Tetras & some Otocinclus. The moment I put in this tank a school of Mcrodevario Kubotai and temporarily one Ramirezi male - the Boraras totally hid in the Limnophila leaves, and they swim out only to eat. I wonder if they are afraid of that Ramirezi, or if Kubotai make them shy...

    Hey Rachel. Just ordered 30 of these for my 47 gallon Nano Tank. But maybe I was rushing to get them too fast. Please tell me that they are fast. Because I already have 20 Dwarf Indian Pufffers in there. Alot of plants though... So ton of hiding places.

    • @CrazyAquariumGuy

      I have a lot of filtration. Eheim 4+ Professionel 600. But they send 2 pounds of ceramic and a lot of plastic that I hate. So I pack them with 5 pounds of ceramic, use the really fine intake sponge and the spray bar. So the stream is not going to be to strong. I just felt like it would look amazing against my green plants and black gravel, black background. But maybe chili rasbora is in danger of the Dwarf Puffers? But I also have 6 Panda Corydoras in there, and as long as you keep your Dwarf Puffers well fed. I don't see the angry issue that alot of people say about them. Tell me the truth. I am a big boy, I can take it. They are coming in 7 days.

    Hi Rachel - no idea if you'll see this, but do you have any recommendations for fish that would get on well with chilli rasboras? I tried them with green neon rasboras (microdevario kubotai) and the green neons harassed them relentlessly, even though they left the cherry shrimp alone. Are chillis happiest by themselves or are there some other tankmates I could try them with?

    Hi Rachel 😊
    Which nano species (egg layers) would you recommend that thrive in hard water?
    I started out with 8 Harlequin Rasbora in May last year and about 3 weeks ago they started dying (I lost 5 in one day) then two died last week. I am very conscientious about water testing and maintenance so I couldn't figure out what was going on.
    I got myself a GH/KH test kit and it seems that I have water that is way too hard for my fish (thanks to Dan Hiteshaw for helping me figure that out).
    I currently have 6 hengeli and 1 remaining Harlequin (I am under the impression that different types of Rasbora will happily school together?) and they seem fine at the moment but I naturally don't want to cause them unnecessary suffering so I'm thinking the best thing for them (and my nerves!) is to rehome and start with a new species that prefers my water conditions.
    I only have room for a nano tank and having researched RO water it seems quite costly and wasteful when there may be a more simple solution available to me.
    Many thanks. 😊

    • @freddiechapman7312
      @freddiechapman7312 8 років тому

      Most species of fish that are suitable for aquaria are those that thrive in acidic conditions. The fish that I would deem suitable for these conditions aren't egg layers they are live bearers guppies and endless. If you don't want them to breed simply obtain only males as females may come pregnant. You can tell there sexes by colouring for guppies (the males are more colourful) and by looking at there fins (females have a fin near there anal cavaty which is like a right Angle triangle and males have one that is thinner). You could alter the hardness and pH of your water by using certain leaves and wood that lower them but stain your water or by using chemicals which is less favourable. As far as your current stocking you may be overstocked so keep an eye on your nitrates keeping them under 50ppm is needed and your ammonia should be at 0 but modern filters are usually capable. Your single harlequin will happily coexist and in the wild would likely shoal together but with many of its own kind as well so you should remove the fish ideally. Sorry for the rant but I hope it helps.

      +Freddie Chapman +Freddie Chapman P.S. I forgot to explain I'm running a fluval U2 in that tank which made my stocking level OK, but I completely understand why you were concerned about the stocking level, I would have been too! 😊
      Sadly, since I posted that I lost all but one of my hengeli. I left everything for a few weeks to see what happened and when I was satisfied the source of illness was gone I began slowly restocking. I currently have 4 hengeli and I'm slowly converting to an RO mix which matches the conditions the hengeli are kept in my LFS.

    I just got some of these last week, and expected them to be much shyer than they are. They do tend to stick to one part of the tank, but have no issue with coming forward during feeding time. They get on very well with my endler (and blend in, so the hubby didn't notice when I got my first set...we'll see if he notices the next batch :P). I do have a Siamese algae eater in there with 6 of them to take care of the hair algae...but I want my little shy cpd's to come out more...i have a planted tank. With 2 Amazon swords, stauryne repens, and have fern.

      +Bradford Aquatics (Riley Bradford) I'd like to know more, too. I have a bunch of them sharing a tank with neon tetras. They were kind of shy at first, but once the plants grew thick enough that they could reach a hiding place quickly, they grew bolder. You really have to get close to make out their color patterns, but once you do, they are beautiful fish.

    • @Christian-cq5ne

    • @HyPn0o
      @HyPn0o 7 років тому

      60l if filtered via good external canister filter, with say about 500l per hr turnover will easily manage 10 along with about 6 other tiny fish. If not just stick to 6 - 7 as suggested by Christian. Be warned these guys are tiny, so any filter strainer intake, or rear filter divide strainer intake needs to be sponge prefiltered.

      Boraras urophthalmoides?

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  9 років тому

      while they do look most similar, they are not from the same area, so most often the mixed species are brigittae and merah. Uropthalmoides can sometimes be sold as chilis (in error), but they are not often found mixed together.
