Hi Charley! My boy Duke is my 7th Dane, 4th rescue. He is a European and looks very much like Roxie but he weighs172 lbs. I only showed him once and now he insists on drinking water only from the faucet in the kitchen sink! Here's hoping y'all have as wonderful times as I have had with mine. Please give Roxie and big Great Dane hug from me and Duke.
Lady Tinsley Blu is 6.5 months and over 80 lbs. Even half way through her first year, it's become easier. She loves her toys and especially the orange ball Roxy has. Thank you for your guidance so far. You've made the journey easier.
She is adorable and let me interject one thought. As a Dane Daddy for 25 years and a physician, ALL humans and canines need to go for an annual checkup! This is preventive medicine that helps them get to old age like my 12 to 14 year old Danes!
I have to say that my purebred Dane was *not* the smartest tool-in-the-shed but she was the sweetest, most loving & gentle 178lb. giant goofball for just short of 13 years. My Dane/English Mastiff 172lb. mix was the most intelligent, intuitive, size/space ratio aware, laid back pack-leader that had the ability to read my mind for (sadly) only 9 years. As my better-half & I have gotten older we have down sized to teeny tiny dogs . . . 70lb Pitties !!! 😁
Just like puppy to adult, it gets better. My dog smelled like roadkill her first time, and now I don't even notice anymore when she comes in heat. She is so clean! 8 year old Border Collie, and she has very bushy butt feathering (breeches).
Thank you for not having her ears mutilated. There is also no need for sterilization, unless you have an intact male or your female is an escape artist. If sterilization is neccessary, the best option is tube ligation, as it leaves the organs intact and is minimally invasive. Alternatively could opt for a hysterectomy, which will prevent her from bleeding but still allows her to go through heat cycles. This is an invasive practice, but has fewer side effects than Ovariohysterectomy, which is the removal of both uterus and ovaries, and is highly invasive and can cause hormonal imbalances, incontinence, changes in behavior and more. Sadly most vets only offer the later, and encourage it by listing BS reasons that aren't even birth control, leaving out the long list of potential negatives. Females heat cycles are really no fuss. Most learn to clean after themselves and some accept to wear a diaper. Dog seasons also have a long interval, ranging from 3 months up to over 1 year, depending on breed and size. Best of fortune and joy to both you and Roxy!
