    I just bought a Great Dane puppy, and it’s so odd to see that everything you do is exactly what I ended up doing hahaha. Even cleaning all the slobber out of their water bowls in the morning.

      I have to say, I wasn't prepared for the slobber. My last dog was 50% Great Dane, with a Great Dane personality, and she left a permanent crust of slobber outside the window of every vehicle in which she traveled.
      The puppy though, the purebred Great Dane, holy smokes! My work clothes are all black, and I go to work looking like I have been attacked by a mob of angry snails. Sticky slobber trails everywhere, all the time.
      She is only five months old. I have a feeling I should just convince my company to let me switch to a snot-colored uniform, because that's where we're heading anyway.

      My best friend has a Great Dane with brindles just like yours. Your babies are truly beautiful 😍. Did you have their beds custom made. Have you seen the stands for the bowls? It’s supposed to be easier on the digestive system.

    • @MichaelCoburn
      @MichaelCoburn  3 роки тому +9

      @@barste08 A little late in my reply, but the beds came from Kuranda (link in description) and also from Dogbeds4less out of California. As to raising the bowls, I did this for my first two Danes and they both ultimately bloated. The science is mixed so I say people do what they want. But I appreciate how nicely you brought it up.

    I raised and rescued Danes on my horse farm many years until I became partially disabled. Love living vicariously through your dogs antics, they give me so much joy. I miss the days of them breaking all my furniture, chewing rawhide off my saddles, opening fridges, freezers to consume all my holiday meats, ending up ordering pizza instead. My best biggest, tallest dog, 205 lbs, would protect fawns at rest and chase deer poachers off my property, but never hurt them.

      @MichaelCoburn  4 роки тому +75

      Thanks for watching. It is a conscious decision based on experience, evidence and breeder/vet feedback. No evidence to indicate that raised feeders reduce the incidence of bloat or GDV. Stomach tacking, which I have done on each of my 3 Great Danes since my first two bloated with raised feeders is a much more effective tactic to reduce the impact of GDV. Here is a link to a peer reviewed article on the topic. Please let me know what evidence you are basing your comments on for your suggestion.
      Abstract
      There are only two studies that study the effect of raised feeders on the risk of Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (GDV) and their findings conflict. Only one study found a significant effect of feeder height, with large and giant breeds fed from a raised feeder being at an increased risk of GDV floor fed dogs. However, these authors found that, where the feeder was raised, the height of the feeder that increased the GDV risk was affected by the size of the dog. Large breed dogs were more likely to develop a GDV if fed from a bowl ≤ 1 foot tall, whereas giant breed dogs were more likely to develop a GDV if fed from a bowl > 1 foot tall. No studies found that feeding from a raised feeder reduced the risk of GDV relative to feeding from the floor. Therefore, the safest option in the absence of further evidence is to advise that owners of ‘at risk’ dogs feed from a feeder on the floor. This may not reduce the risk of GDV, but there is no evidence to suggest that it will increase the risk.

    I seriously would also recommend using an elevated feeder it takes a lot of strain off of their neck and back and forelegs and helps them to not have excess pain as they age. also helps them not ingest so much air to reduce the chances of bloat. even if the Danes are gastropexied. It still helps to reduce chances of bloat❤

      They are originally proper to have them cropped because a long time ago they cropped their ears so they could fight boars... I think it has become a more preferred look to the Dane and it is completely pain free since they are under anesthesia and on medication for a week. Lots of people disagree but if it's that painful it would be considered abuse and be banned in all states and countries...I suggest that you take a look at the pros of ear cropping.

    Some things for you:
    Okay, you should raise your great danes food and water dishes. I have three great danes, and I'm just saying, you should really do that. Also, why do you keep them locked up in such tiny spaces? They should be able to roam your house, and you should make sure they always have food and fresh water EVEN in the night, or that could cause hunger and thirst issues. Quick question, why is his name Magic if he's not even a girl? You should also let both of them outside at the same time, and they should be able to go outside anytime they want. And if they don't want to eat, don't make them. Not tryin to hate on you, but like, I think you are a VERY irresponsible grey dane owner (coming from a nine year old girl who owns three great danes).
